Hey everyone
I have been going back and playing a lot of Halo reach and Halo 5 in preparation for the PC release and getting excited for Halo Infinite.
One thing I noticed that I perhaps get a little annoyed with is the spartan customization. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love it all. The only part that annoys me is the constant scrolling through pages and for each section of the spartan.
In Halo reach it was the constant scrolling through all the different parts of the body, and for Halo 5 it was the endless paint variations of each helmet and chest piece.
My idea is combine the customization settings for both and add something new I think players would appreciate. Perhaps armour in Infinite should be categorized the same way in Reach where if you were to, lets say, click on helmet customization, you would see only the base design for each helmet, but when you click on the base design, such as Recon, you would then see the variations for that helmet. That way we are not scrolling through endless amounts of helmets. It would mean less scrolling and it would be much clearer.
The addition I have in mind is outfits, or being able to save outfits to come back to. Lets say you like a combination of a recon helmet, EOD chest, ODST shoulders and whatever else is in the combo, you can save it as an outfit that will auto-equip all the pieces if you ever wanted to come back to it. This way, once again, you are not scrolling through every category looking for the combo you used to like.
Feel free to add on as well or let me know if these ideas are in circulation already. Thank you
Well Halo Reach and H5 had very different philosophies for customization.
Reach was basically an unlock system that was meant to drive player engagement to not only playing the game more but in different ways getting achievements and weekly tasks for bonus credits. H5 was more of a system to set up the Req cards. It is very hard to make a system where after you get an item you have to level it up in any way other than getting more copies of said Req card. Quickest way was to put in your credit card.
I think that the categorization forged for Halo: Reach was very fleshed out and good looking. The game had an overall great UI experience, along with Halo 3. Although, of course, each game has a specific UI for a specific reason. Each game’s customization ranges from title to title. How they want to present this is up to the developers. With the customization that Halo Infinite is going to acclaim, maybe the UI direction for customization could be very close to that of Halo: Reach, but, along with that, there may be a change in such for a specific reason, whatever that may be. It’s kind of hard to get into the nitty-gritty of such a subject as UI before a game is even developed. You can see with Halo MCC that they can change the UI to whatever they see fit, depending on how you interact with the game, the update, etc. I’m glad that you’re that into this, because I am too bro. I love Halo, and I can’t wait to see what 343 has up their sleeve for this amazing upcoming title!
I would love this because it gets tiring scrolling through so many pages for about 200+ helmets and armor. Halo: Reach had a nice organized method of sorting that made looking for the armor you want easy. Just because Halo 5 had a different method for obtaining armor, doesn’t mean it couldn’t have done the same thing.
Instead of adding a different variant of the armor/helmet, they could have had the base helmets lined up but grayed out until you unlocked them, then clicking on the base helmet should have let you view what other variants you could get for that helmet. Same thing for the armor.
Definitely want that outfit save feature. There’s several sets I like in H5 but it’s such a bother to go through everything to change when I feel like it that I’ve just kept on my favourite set for years now lol
H5 customization was terrible. Slight little changes make it impossible to see in a match. Lets go back to Reach.

Haha thank you for the support for the idea. Would make things so much easier and faster.
H5’s customization and general UI is typical for something designed to do a lot of stuff but ending up as something that is way to complex to work quickly and intuitively without keyboard and mouse. That’s when you get stuff like endless scrolling, double/triple options that are similar but spread across an endless scroll. It’s the sort of UI you tend to see in console RPGs and Destiny for instance.
Simple clustering of things would make it so much easier.
1: reduce the number of base models. 20-30 helmet types would be more than enough.
2: every piece of armor should have two sub categories:
- Attachments (little add ons to helmets/shoulders/wrist)
- Patterns (to be applied instead of being a ‘different’ piece)
So essentially you combine Reach with some of the options of H5 and you’re done. This automatically results in a more intuitive UI and it also gives us more options to customize our Spartans. Best of both worlds.
That’s actually a good idea! I personally enjoy changing set every now and then, sometimes going back to sets I previously used. This would make it much easier and I feel like it’s not even a hard option to add.

All of my yesses. Quicker, more intuitive, less visual clutter, cleaner. Halo Reach customization menu UI was very, very good.

Precisely, there are so many times where I dont even wanna bother altering my look because if I don’t end up happy with the changes, it takes forever to scroll back to the original set I was wearing. I think with this improvement, players would feel a bit more free to customize how they want.

That’s basically what it was designed to do. When the community back-lashed, they were told to, “shut [their] yapper.” Wonderful minds at work at 343/Microsoft during the development of Halo 5. I would love to see the return of a Halo: Reach/Halo 3 armor unlock system. Maybe some of the more rare looking armors could be unlocked by achievements, while the general looking ones, up until you get to higher and higher ranks could be purchased through credits or whatever. Maybe if 343 wants a microtransaction cash-grab, they can have credits be able to be purchased. Would make it easy to have free DLCs.
Yeah I’d much prefer a Reach-esqe feel for looking at the armor variations, I don’t even think I have seen all the helmets in Halo 5 if I’m honest aha
