Something Feels Wrong With Trueskill/SBMM in Ranked Arena

It’s also negatively affected the objective games themselves too since people have figured this out. Coordinated teams will just gain a comfortable lead, then slay until the clock runs out. This is just a painful experience.

I ground out the battle pass, hit Onyx, and with these weekly rewards being a joke, I’m hanging this game up until some real change takes place. I love Halo, and I just hate to see this happen. I’ll be following the updates, so we’ll see what the roadmap looks like when they reveal it…

The system is a joke. I played like 10 games today. 2 of them had AFK players. And from those two games alone I nearly lost an 1/2 a rank because AFK… then I went super positive and barely lost 3 other games and then proceeded to lose massive amounts of elo again when I did really good but my teammates who for some reason are plat went like 10-30. And btw all of those games my teammates were either low diamond or plat. The enemy team were all high diamond or onyx. Like wtf? I can’t carry every game when I have 2 teammates going 10-30 almost every match or AFK. The system is punishing me for bad teammates. And trust me sometimes I have bad matches and I can admit that and I lose elo respectfully for that I’m not upset for losing elo when I play bad that’s on me. But when I go 28 and 12 and barely lose a match and lose 1/4 of my rank when 2 of my teammates went 10-30 something is wrong with that bro. The matchmaking is busted. I’m d6 and have barely had any onyx teammates but have been consistently facing off against all d6 or onyx teams. My teammates consistently lower rank and don’t perform as well. What is this bs. I had one match where a teammate just never played objective and was always on the other side of the map not even getting kills like meanwhile the enemy team is on comms closer than my tights to my body bro. Matchmaking needs work.

This honestly sounds like smurfs trying to lower their MMR. They threwtheir placement, played too many good games with friends causing their MMR to go back into Onyx. They jumped back in without their team to try to tank their MMR again. You were the unfortunate collateral.

It just feels so awful man. Like my last match I lost a strongholds on recharge by like 2 points. I went 27 or 28 and like 12-15 deaths can’t remember off the top of my head. I had one teammate WHOM was onyx ranked btw and for the first 1/2 of the match he went 0-15. He didn’t get a single kill for 15 deaths. How is he in onyx? Also how do I lose nearly 1/4 of my rank when I have teammates playing like that? Oh and btw I checked his elo after and he barely lost any rank. But I lost a ton. It’s borderline a joke. I almost want to stop playing because of how awful the matchmaking has been. A couple days ago I was playing bad and losing elo and sure I was upset but I was playing bad that’s my fault. Now I’m playing pretty good but can’t win a match and losing insane elo because of AFKs or bad randoms it really sucks.

Are you sure it wasn’t me? j/k
In all seriousness though, this is exactly what happens to me. I’m Onyx, and I’ve ended games with like a .38 k/d and my teammates (of a lower rank) would get hammered and lose ~10 CSR, while I only lose 1 CSR.

Trueskill thinks it knows your MMR, so it will weigh your gains and loses based on that number. If you had a few bad games, the system dropped your backend MMR. You’re most likely still feeling the effects of that in your recent games. It should eventually correct if you play well and win a few matches.

In my case, I feel like I’ve lost ALOT of my recent games. (roughly a 30% W/L in the last 25 matches), my rank has barely moved, and I feel like I’m stuck playing against opponents above my skill level constantly. I’m a casual player, so if I take a break for a few days (or a week), the system brings me right back in where I left off, so by the time I feel ‘warmed up’, it’s time to get off…

Definitely wasn’t you bro lol. But it just feels real punishing when I’m going positive and the games crushing me for unfortunate circumstances. Like most of my play has been really good lately and sometimes better than many onyx players I’ve seen and I’m getting punished way harder for losses. Just sucks man feels wrong.

Know that feel. Wait until you get the “I just won 5 in a row, lost one, and am lower rank than I started” feelz.

or the…“I just won the game that will rank me up, oh wait, server hiccup; no rank gain for any player, and lose the next match, and the next 2 matches, great - now I’m demoted…but here’s a win streak, wait, now five 3v4’s, I’m exactly where I started, I’ll play one more …hey I won…OH WAIT! NO CSR AGAIN.”

Game is burdensome.

This. The system is a joke as it currently is, it should ba based on wins and losses only

The ranking system should weight the personal performance more than W/L.
With personal performance i mean:

  • Slayer: k/d + sum of assists + medals like double, triple, killing spree and so on
  • Stronghold: sum of capture + sum of defending a base + ratio of captures before death + only a slight impact k/d
  • CTF: huge weight on any activity and medal related to the flag like “stop the carrier”, “bring back the flag”, protect the carrier, support the own carrier + only a slight impact k/d
  • Oddball: killing the carrier, holding the ball, protecting the carrier + all slayer formulas

W/L should have only a slight impact on the amount of csr that will be added or subtracted from your rank.

As long as you don’t mean just the pure W/L. That’s a W/L ratio, not a ranking system.

It has to take the relative strengths of the team’s into account to be a quick and efficient ranking system.

As for the other factors they use, such as K/min and weighting for squads - the maths behind their inclusion appears sound. You can see their rationale in Microsoft’s TrueSkill2 discussion paper.

All fantastic ideas… we just need to stay away from individual stats that lend themselves to abuse.

I’ve already been team-killed twice just as I was about to cap a flag just so my team mate could steal the flag and do it themselves. And a few more times where I’m sure my colleague has happily waited until I’ve been killed by the enemy before coming in to “save the day” and pick up the flag.

I would love to see more damage related stats in Slayer - so much more informative than simple K:D.

Then for objective - yes. Lots of team stats. If someone picks up a flag then everyone gets the “stat”. Metres travelled with flag (as the crow flies). etc. Just make sure that it encourages team play.

In regards to rank… it has to be about the W/L. It’s a team game. You can’t focus on individual performance - the game is toxic enough as it is.
