Some Potential Areas for Improvement

Although I have had a blast playing Halo 5, the game is far from perfect, and is downright frustrating in many aspects. Here are some problems I think 343i could learn from for future games. This is all my opinion and I understand that some players may see some things differently:

  • REQ Pack and REQ Collection ProblemsThese are kind of ridiculous. Sometimes after opening a pack I cannot sell my REQs, nor do they show up in my collection. On some occasions I didn’t receive any REQ points when selling a REQ. Also I cannot sell more than one REQ at a time. These issues happen to me quite frequently.

  • Random DisconnectsI have very stable internet and for some reason will get disconnected from games quite frequently at times. I do not lose internet when this happens (I have Xbox Live still). Many times this will happen right near the end of a 20 minute Warzone game where I get no rewards and used all of my REQs. At least I get my boost back. I wish I could get the REQs that I used back though.

  • Problems Muting PlayersSometimes the mute option for players during the game and in the lobby does not work.

  • Carnage Report and Multiplayer Lobby LayoutThe Carnage Report is good, but not great. I wish it would show top medals for the entire game (not just for each player). I also wish it would show more about vehicle and grenade kills, just not power weapons. Adding KDA and Accuracy was good and interesting though. Halo Reach had a great Carnage Report.

I also wish I got to see the armor of my teammates and opponents before the game. I think it would be better to see the armor rather than the emblem. How can I tell who someone is based on their emblem alone??? I understand that some people would quit if they saw they were playing an entire clan or a SR152, but I would like to show off what I got in my REQ packs!

Halo Reach has the best lobby IMHO. It shows armor and emblem, commendation percentage, gamertag and players you are partied with. It was perfect. Here are some examples. You could also easily access Service Record and Commendations. I wish Halo 5 would show Halo TMCC stats in the Service Record.

  • I wish some unlocks (ie. important or cool unlocks, not just generic armor or emblems) required certain accomplishments or feats, not just "luck of the draw"
  • I wish Commendations and Service Record were more easy to access and were more visible of each player

Some great suggestions. However I think 343 actively tried to differentiate from Bungie’s Halo Reach so much so that they removed everything good about it and made it garbage. The UI and menu’s of Halo 4 and 5 were by far the worst I have ever seen in any game.
Halo reach had the best social aspect to it as on the right of your screen you could see what all your friends were doing in real time. Now you have to hit x, then bumper right to see who is online and can’t see what they’re doing unless you click on their profile. It really sucks.
Carnage report was also better, I have to scroll through a page or two before I see see any stats I’m actually interested in.

I don’t have much faith for Halo 6 tbh. Each game’s UI gets progressively worse.

I also experience not being able to mute players. Mute All a lot of times doesn’t work and I have to go a whole game with somebody blasting Justin Bieber “Baby Baby” song for an entire match.

I also frequently get disconnected before a game ends without losing internet connection as well. Happens a lot and always seems to happen when I’m on a rampage. 10-20 kill spree? NOPE I DON’T THINK SO -game disconnects-. Rage worthy stuff.

They should just do away with the req system entirely, but if they keep it, then yes we should have more earnable cosmetics too.

I’m all for a better pre-game lobby like Halo Reach had, but mostly for different reasons. I just think having armor and stances is kind of pointless when other players probably won’t even see them outside of gameplay. I like showing off my stylish outfits, but I doubt many people spend much time looking at people’s Spartans in the post-game carnage report. And if they took your suggestion and gave us lots of armor to work towards earning via accomplishments, then this would be even more important, because they would need to make sure players can show them off better.

The req system needs to go. Microtransactions are not good. Also, I agree that earnable cosmetics are something I would like to see return.

I’m constantly surprised at how if you ask ten different players what needs improvement then you get ten remarkably different lists. Sure there are one or two universal sources of irritation, but even those are often approached completely differently. Reqs are a great example. Clearly they’re hated by everyone, and yet someone keeps buying them, and as long as someone buys them then 343 will keep selling them. Beyond the annoyance of their existence I’m not sure I really care whether I can sell them in batch, and I don’t really care whether I lose some in a disconnect. They’re worthless to me anyway so it’s no great loss.

That said, UIs and req systems seem pretty small potatoes to me set next to issues of gameplay, ranking, and matchmaking. Those are the things, in my opinion, which make a game fun or suck the fun out of it, and Halo 5 has got virtually none of it right. Some of it is less wrong than the rest, but that’s hardly a recommendation.
