EDIT: Before you read, please remember that I’m very aware that the cutscenes probably aren’t done yet, I am just curious to see what you guys think.
Now before I begin, I need to clarify that I think the Halo 5 cutscenes look absolutely gorgeous. The detail is amazing and I can’t wait to see more. But there is a problem that I have with some of them that I haven’t seen anyone else talk about. Is it just me? I guess this thread will let me know.
Anyway, the cutscenes look a little off in some instances because of the blurring in the background. It looks like they’re trying to go for a more cinematic look where the characters are in focus but the background isn’t. This would be cool if it didn’t look so… weird. The blurring seems like someone selected the “blur” tool in a video editing program and just threw it in there. In fact, it reminds me of things being intentionally blurred out to conceal secrets. But that doesn’t seem right because in some scenes there isn’t anything in the background.
Here’s a screenshot of Buck. This one isn’t too bad but you can see a faint black line around his model. it’s most notable when watching it in motion.
Here’s a screenshot of Halsey. This is the one I have the biggest problem with. The blurring looks absolutely awful. But in all fairness, the textures are also pretty bad so I assume that this was from early in development.
I know I’ll probably get some people upset because I’m “nitpicking” but I was just curious to see if anyone else noticed this besides me.
I dont know if ita on purpose but it seems as if theres outlines in cinematics, kind of reminds me of borderlands a bit. If this is another new art direction im fine with it, but im hoping its just a temporary cinematic glitch. All cinematics are in engine after all.

Yeah the Buck one didn’t seem too bad in the image I posted but it seemed a little strange when I watched the video. I could see more of a black outline around him in the actual video.
CHECK OUT THIS IMAGE. You’ll see Buck sitting behind Lasky and the Elite. The only thing is, he’s not sitting on anything. He’s just floating there like he’s sitting. Also Buck’s and Tanaka’s visors don’t seem to be colored yet.
So that led me to conclude that what we’re seeing is pretty early. I wouldn’t get worried about it.
When you take a snapshot of a game in motion, you can “easily” find the nuances and tricks they used to create the moving canvas before us.
It is when we remember that the game is intended to be viewed as a moving canvas that we accept those tricks as part of the reality.
Especially at 60fps, lighting effects that are off buffer and/or contrast between frames are much better experienced, not captured.
Different Internet sites have different quality of video compression, so that affects us sometimes.
AND of course, it is still a work in progress

Sure, but I noticed these things while watching the video. And I’m actually really interested to see what the cinematics look like in 60fps with polished lighting and such.

I know it’s pretty early and I hope they’ll make it look better. I was just interested to know if anybody else noticed it, since I hadn’t seen anyone mention it.
I agree. There is a lot of fake shaky-cam action going on as well, and it just looks terrible. I think this is most apparently bad looking in the E3 campaign demo when fireteam Osiris is jumping off of a covenant ship into action. It’s looks ugly for some reason.
As plenty of others already said I’m sure it’s because the cutscenes aren’t done completely, the image of Buck sitting on nothing pretty much confirms this (to me anyway).

Absolutely. That thread about Buck doing squats in the background had me dying of laughter. 343 has enough professionals to make the cutscenes look great, I was just curious to see what others thought.

They do look pretty awesome. The difference between Halo 4 and 5 is amazing.
