So this is my first time posting on one of these forums and I thought I’d put forward some modest ideas for the Halo 4 forge tool.
+A bigger forge world.
Forge world should definitely be larger. Reach’s forge world is more of a forge land than anything. It’s most prominently water without any water vehicles to make the most of the masses of it.
I think it would be great if forge world was an entire ring made up of a bunch of smaller lands each with a different sort of theme. i.e. jungle land, a snowy area, a grassland, a forerunner based area, a volcanic area and have some water areas around too but with water vehicles to use on the water! +Texture tools.
A tool to texture specific items would be fantastic so that we don’t have to only have the dull forge pieces that we currently have because they kinda make every map look the same. +A larger budget.
A larger budget, if not an infinite amount, would be excellent. As well as this it would be great if the limit on items that can be placed were lifted. +More objects in the forge palette.
Items such as transport vehicles, civilian vehicles and target locators would be great. +Environment tools
A tool which would allow you to cut into rock face and fill items with water would also be awesome.
> 1. Glue- Stick 2 or more objects together to make one.
> 2. Copy/Paste tool- A tool that comes with the glue tool to save your time from creating new pieces over and over again/
> 3. More environments- Jungle, Snowy, Glassed, etc.
> 4. Changeable FX- I don’t want just that boring metal. I want, Covenant objects, Flood-infected objects and more.
> 5. More forge world- I want a city like New Alexandria, a Covie city like High Charity and more.
I can safely say that I agree with everything in this post. Especially the glue tool and the copy and paste. Being able to build a structure and then just copy and paste the entire thing somewhere else would be great.
Also, an undo button!
I’d have to disagree with most of those as I don’t think they’d be really that practical for a lot of people who use forge for its simplicity.
Halo 3’s Forge was great, it had the right pieces to combine together, simple textures that all blended well, and the desert region matched the pieces. However, it was almost impossible to merge things flawlessly due to the solid effects of pieces that had to be glitched to merge them together.
Halo: Reach’s Forge on the other hand was in some aspects a massive enhancement, but in other words a step in the wrong direction. It had all the tools we needed, but it severely lacked due to performance issues of the xbox, terrible textures on pieces that didn’t match the scenery, and limited access to the map you actually saw.
I’d prefer it if we got 3 maps, each with their own climate (sand, tropical, snow) and all had the same pieces available (that when combined, they actually fit together! Not randomly sized pieces that can’t fit with anything!) I’d be happy with maps small enough to be able to create a Big Team Battle map effectively, without it being so large it hinders performance on the Xbox 360.
The rock cutting tool mentioned in the OP is something I wouldn’t expect to see as it would turn a map editor into a map creator. I don’t think 343 have the resources to have people uploading and sending full map files across their network every few seconds. The water tool would be nice though… albeit, would likely cause issues in performance…
I think it’d be nice to see some form of decorative category (not like the one we have in reach which is just another piece category). I want to be able to place moss and stuff on pieces that give it an overgrown effect, or add coloured lighting around edges of pieces to make them stand out.
I have an idea. I think you should be able to customize backgrounds and settings. Instead of having to rely solely on filters to change the “feel” and ambiance of the map, you should be able to turn the background into something else. For example, if the backgrount for a map set on the UNSC Infinity was simply that of a large area of desolate space. You would be able to place another background like one set Reach’s orbit, one above a Halo Instillation, one above Blood Gulch or even a background which was set close to the Ark.

I think that just because there is a more involved forge system that there doesn’t have to also be a way to use the tool more simply. If people want to use a simple tool, they should be able to, if not they should be able to use something more intricate.
Everything else I can see where you’re coming from though.
