Click this link and pause the video the instant it loads. It’s an official video, showing what appears to be some sort of Halo 4 stat display on a revamped Waypoint that has yet to be released. The display consists of a set of gametype icons; moving the cursor over an icon shows pertinent stats, such as kill counts or medal counts.
The gametypes, in order from left to right, are or appear to be:
The two unknown symbols are an atom and a cubic icon. One of those symbols has to be Dominion (probably the cubic icon, as it resembles a square capture volume), and the other must be Extraction. That means that Assault, Headhunter, Juggernaut, Race, Stockpile, VIP, and the entire “Insane” category in Reach are all missing, so I think we can safely assume that those gametypes have been axed.
If we don’t have VIP or Race, then it may be impossible to build racetracks that run on anything other than honor rules. Unless Dominion or Regicide have some relevant functionality, we will not be able to cobble together a Race game variant on our own.
As much as I approve of many of 343i’s choices for Halo 4, the decision to omit notable gametypes like Assault and Race is baffling. This doesn’t necessarily spell the end of those gametypes, though: there is evidence to suggest that Halo 4 will use a gametype scripting engine similar to Reach’s, meaning that 343i may be able to add these gametypes post-release without even having to release a Title Update. The question, though, is: will they?
I’ve been on about this for a while, can’t agree more. The other gametype is Extraction. It and Dominion are basically territories split in two, and neither entirely like the original thing.
You’re also forgetting Insane. It and stockpile comprised most of Reach’s minigames.

Ah, thanks for the info.
So Dominion could be the atom – planetary domination – or extraction could be the atom – planetary extraction. And no Territories, either. Good to know.

Ah, yes, Insane. A shining example of the powers of a gametype scripting engine. Its omission isn’t surprising, but I suppose it’s notable, yes.
> And finally, Infection is swords only. Woo.
So it seems. But it’s possible that the claw is merely an Infection-only weapon, that has been designed to fit the Flood player models exceptionally well. Let’s not give up hope just yet.
I would rather they kept in as many gametypes as possible, even if most don’t make it to MM straight away. The fact that these look they’re out of the game altogether worries me that they won’t be updating the MM to be more varied at all.
Yes, sometimes Big team and Objective is all fun, but those rare nights when you just want to have fun an play a bit of fun, community gametypes, they were what set halo apart for me.
I really hope they patch them in somehow, even if just for custom or a community playlist.

Perhaps when we get a few forged map variants that are a little smaller, or even created specifically for doubles, will they bring it back.
We can only hope, cause I really liked doubles.

Haven and Solace would work alright for 2v2, and there’s always Forge.
It is incredibly disappointing to see so many gametypes scrapped, especially considering some of them were classics like assault and race. What I find nearly as disappointing is the lack of custom options available in some of the gametypes we do have; no ability to alter the new CTF changes to recreate classic CTF, no way to let zombies have different weapons in Flood, etc.

What maps would you play Doubles on?
I agree. Don’t forget Invasion, although it was confirmed a while ago that their new version of Invasion is “Dominion”. Still, there are a ton of game-types that were just left out. I hope we hear more information on this from the bulletin tonight.

How about Haven? Maybe Solace, Adrift, and Abandon too. And don’t forget Forge maps. How many times do I have to say this?
But yeah, I’ll miss some of the old gametypes…
And to answer for Bred for Halos original question, Team Doubles and Snipers are easy to make, I think the issue is gametypes that you can’t make, or fix.

They’re far too big. The size of Guardian or Prisoner is the appropriate size for 2v2 gametypes, and the smallest map in the game (Abandon) has at least 3x the playable space as Guardian. These 4v4 matches should be proof enough that they’re too big for even 4v4, let alone 2v2 gametypes. 10 minutes for a 4v4 slayer match is painfully slow.
