I think I’m what people would refer to as a casual gamer. I am the type of guy who will play an hour or two several nights a week, in the lounge, with headphones on so nobody has to put up with the noise. I don’t have many friends who own a console, certainly none that play online, and I don’t use a headset. I thought I’d buy Halo because I’ve never played it before and I’m a big fan of FPS, and I’ve enjoyed playing the single player mode even if it was a bit linear. However, it’s the Arena mode that I tend to play the most.
The matchmaking in Halo 5 has caused some of the most frustration I have ever had in a game. At the beginning of a season, probably 8 out of 10 games I am the medal winner in at least 1 category sometimes 3. Team skills are mixed at this point because nobody is ranked, so I maybe win 4 or 5 of those games - I never play as part of a fireteam. This season I was placed at Silver 5. Then is when it gets really bad… I end up playing in teams of people who have no idea how to play the game and my rank reduces and reduces, even though I am the medal winner 75% of the time, the people on my team hit me with power weapons non stop.
Does anyone have any tips for how I can avoid getting so frustrated? It would be good for an unranked playlist, so I didn’t get stuck with a whole team of people who have never played before, or for their to be some form of match making for solo players where I didn’t end up in a team of random players vs 3 or 4 players in a team. At this point I’m thinking of just stopping playing.
Help!
I’d say try playing different modes, social playlists or warzone. For ranked arena, there isn’t much we can do with advice or tips that’s going to change the problems you’re having with the game.
If you’re willing to change yourself; try using a headset, trying finding people to play with. Very often you can be the solution to your own problem. Hope this helps!
Sadly the one an only tip is to play with teammates. I had a 1.65 K/D over the weekend and I ranked down from platinum 3 to 1. Even lost a match where I was 27-8, like seriously you can’t manage to get the remaining 23 kills?!
Join a company and look up for teammates there. I do like playing solo but there is a risk and it’s to get de-rank unfortunately.
not much you can really do. I have 3 small children, so I cant play with a headset for fear of waking em up, so I just play solo like 90% of time. I always rank down non-stop even tho I can play amazing at times with killer k/d spreads. doesn’t matter. this is a team game, and since im not in a team, I cannot rank up without a lil luck from other randoms. good luck rollin solo in a team game, I know the frustration.

Finding teammates is the best advice. Just playing with my old friends (overall k/ds between .6 and 1.2) - we would win well over 60% of the time and all of them would play better. Obviously better individual skill players can be better - but they aren’t always necessarily good teammates.
OP - make sure to pick those power weapons up more if you can instead of teammates. I remember back in the day of halo 3 when I first came to halo - I never picked them up because I was new and learning and figured teammates would be better - that was usually not true though lol. Pick em up and use them. I became a rocket -Yoink!- after that - I still will give up sniper to others since I still think my support pistol/br is worth more than my sniper (im okay with it).

I am sure there is at least 1 spartan company out there for adults / people with kids who understand not using headsets. I know I’ve seen a couple when I was looking for a company back during release.
You guys are more than welcome to add me - usa eastern time zone. I have 2 kids so sometimes I have to quit because they wake up at night.
Just have to persevere and press on man. Usually when yr in the higher gold tier to mid plats there would be some players who has mikes and can communicate well.
There’s nothing you can do other than find pals to play with. Even the “social” playlists are actually ranked so you’ll still get smashed and face full squads. Same with full squads in Warzone. It’s to the point where there isn’t anything I can simply enjoy which is why I haven’t been playing much. Sad really.
Maybe the return of Firefight will help.

As much as I love getting a good K/ and a win, add to this a good ranking, I play the game because I love Halo. If at the end of my gaming session I did great, whether I ranked up or down, and I enjoyed playing, it’s all that matters.
If you just play solo, don’t bother caring about rank. There is no advice one can give that will help you climb, besides find teammates.
If you want to find a team, you have to plug in your mic. It will take a few games, now that everyone seems to be in party chat, but if players find you valuable, they will join you or invite.
You would be suprised how much it helps to play with a team with mics.
If you prefer going solo, then play for fun, not for rank.
There’s not a lot that you can do. I understand the frustration completely.
Why not play FFA. Otherwise I agree with other posters, either join a team or don’t let ranking bother you. Halo 5 is heavily skewed towards team play.
As a casual player I totally get this. Best thing you can do is focus on yourself, there is always something you can improve on, I like to try and focus on something every couple of weeks (this week it was overshield and camo pickups, because I always forget about them). If you focus on your skill rather than rank I find it less frustrating, there have been games where I have played really well and still lost, but the enjoyment of playing well outways the loss. Anyway just remember the probability of you being on the “better team” is about 50% so hopefully it evens out over time, best of luck!
I would play FFA the entire time if I could ever get a match. I’ve probably tried 20 times and was able to play once, I’m based in Aus so mustn’t have many people playing it here.
Agree with all of the “it’s a team game” stuff, I get it, I’m just annoyed that I get ranked down because of my team when we’re just a bunch of random players.
Thanks for the tip re: finding a company that doesn’t require a mic.
Edit: and it’s not the rank I care about, it’s the quality of gameplay when you have team members who don’t understand game objectives but do understand how to shoot teammates with power weapons.
I understand fully. I am not competitive at all but my lo ranks annoy the heck out of me
