So why does Spartan Ops require online?

It’s been bugging me this so I figured I’d ask. Firefight mode gets dumped and replaced with Spartan Ops, which, let’s face it, isn’t anywhere near as good. It’s non customisable. Theatre Mode doesn’t work with it. And it’s laggy as heck which considering you must have Xbox Live Gold to even access it is a bit of a joke really.

What gets me though is the “complete a spartan ops mission solo, on legendary” achievement. Now I’m far from an achievement -Yoink!-. I haven’t even attempted this yet. Complete a spartan ops mission solo though, on legendary. Solo being the operative word. AKA, not with other players. Which is what XBL gold is actually required for.

It just boggles my mind as to why they made the decision to drop firefight and then make spartan ops require XBL when it really doesn’t need it unless it’s being played with other players.

-Yoink!- wants you to pay for it. No other reason why. -Yoink!- is just greedy.

Pretty much. If you want more than 5 or 6 hours of replay from this game you have pay for online.

It is not laggy, your connection speed just must seriously have flaws or your Xbox 360 is of the ancient dinosaur variety.

And it has to be streamed, and the Episodes and chapters are downloaded that is why you need Xbox Live, if you had done some research you would already know how things work and why other games have the same requirements, all DLC requires Xbox Live.

I swear you just creep these forums looking for a opportunity to start your trolling once more, you will never cease to amaze me.

Firefight Arcade utterly ruined Firefight and replaced it with a boring, completely sucktacular experience.

Spartan Ops is actually pretty cool in terms of the story and mission design. I call it an improvement. Though I’d like Firefight “limited” to return.

Since it gives Xp they probably dont want people to cheat offline in some way.

Maybe they should let you do them offline for no XP.

What are you talking about? The campaign only lasts 5-6 hours (took me 5 hours and 31 minutes) and the other modes require a gold sub.

Firefight Limited was probably my favorite game type in Halo: Reach. I absolutely hate the fact that there is no “limited” option on any of the Spartan Ops. I end the game when I die as I do not like to complete Spartan Ops Chapters without dying.

I find Spartan Ops extremely boring though, and once I beat them all on normal (extremely slowly), I will definitely not be replaying them on another difficulty. They aren’t fun.

There really is no reason other than to force people to connect to Xbox Live. And idiotic move to say the least.

In all honesty though, it has alot to do with the fact that the Spartan Ops missions aren’t actually on the disk, or even downloaded to your Xbox. They are loaded from 343i’s servers temporarily using on-disk “materials” such as maps, enemies, scenery, vehicles etc.

But the actual missions themselves aren’t there.

Not to mention Episodes 6-10 weren’t made until after the game shipped. They will include new maps and materials that will be included within the first TU.

Because 343i decided to let everything run via matchmaking servers.

Spartan Ops

If the matchmaking servers are not running perfectly, you can’t even play custom games(!) which was not the case with previous Halo titles.

Firstly, my connection is fine. Secondly, my current 360 is the latest 250gb slim and less than a year old. Thirdly, no, all DLC does not require XBL. It requires it to download it, yes, but not to actually use it. And fourthly, it needs to be streamed? The gameplay involved in Spartan Ops does not need to be streamed. Nor do the environments need to be “streamed”. Everything to do all that is already there on the disc. The watchable video episodes etc may need to be streamed but the maps and gameplay really don’t.

As for the XP thing, well, offline in Firefight in the previous games just gave you a minimal amount of XP. And HALO 4 still gives you XP offline for doing something as trivial as exploring a multi-player map for a minute on your own then quiting the game.

You’re kidding right? If that was the case the Spartan Ops maps would not take up much space at all. Just like custom maps.

You can check your storage settings, Spartans Ops is a large file that was installed to the Xbox when doing the multiplayer install.

When the second half of season 1 comes out it will be a download of all the missions.

I can see why it requires you to have online, but I don’t see why you require Gold.

They have no idea how many seasons there will be. Making them DLC would probably lead to consuming a massive amount of your Xbox’s storage. So instead of downloading them permanently to your Xbox, they are hosted on a Microsoft server and you access them on a temporary basis. This is why you must have Xbox Live.

> It is not laggy

Yes, it is. It is usually very laggy when played in Matchmaking. Sometimes it gets downright unplayable. And the worst part is, it’s a different kind of lag. Instead of things suddenly appearing or disappearing like in PvP MM, Spartan Ops suffers from severe control lag. I pull the trigger, and on the worst occasions it may take up to two seconds for my Spartan to actually fire.

Btw, I have an Xbox slim and a 30 mbit download, so your conclusion is completely false.

They are downloaded to your harddrive. Please stop spreading false information. Check your storage.

Why do people keep spitting out this garbage when it doesn’t even make sense? Do some research, people.

Your little connection stats mean nothing.

I’m on a 1.5mbit down/.3mbit up, in the middle of the woods, with internet coming wirelessly from a tower miles away, and I don’t lag in Spartan Ops unless I leave a download running or similar.

Please stop blaming the game for a problem with your own connection.

Check this out: I have 4 XBL Gold profiles on my console. When I lost my internet for the day, the game wouldn’t let me play Spartan Ops at all. That is 100 percent bull!

When you play solo spartan ops it shouldn’t require Gold. I don’t have gold and I already started playing another game (Don’t worry, its not CoD) because all you can do without gold is campaign.
