Why the hell do they enjoy exposing their ugly skulls? I can kind of understand that they use it to intimidate and demoralize the enemy. But they seem to use it at inappropriate times. If you opened up all of the links I provided, you would have noticed that all of the clips involve Promethean Knights on top of John-117 and exposing their skull to him. While something like that may scare an enemy at the height of battle, I don’t see how it would work when confronting and sedating your enemy. Something like that would most likely elicit a faster response.
And I don’t see that much universal practicality behind it. How can you guarantee that something like this will scare all alien species and individuals? I know the Flood, who were the greatest threat to the Forerunners, most certainly wouldn’t find it particularly scary. It fact that it would most likely encourage them to attack, as it reminds them of useful biomatter. And besides, doesn’t stopping to expose your skull heighten the risks of receiving a headshot?
I’m also concerned about this becoming overused. While it may be creepy and awesome the first few times, I can see it becoming old and stale very quickly. 343 Industries seem to be diverting a lot of attention to this gimmick in Halo 4’s advertising. There are other ways to make the Prometheans both menacing and frightening, and I have seen them before. I just don’t see why 343i seem to be capitalizing off of this animation so much.
Maybe I’m just not getting any deeper motive behind this ‘expression’. Is this some kind of ritualistic war cry, as mandated by the Forerunner’s belief in the Mantle? Or perhaps some other cultural thing? Or maybe the Prometheans are secretly exhibitionists, and they get off on showing their skulls to the enemy? I don’t know. But yeah, I just wanted to share some of my concerns about the Prometheans. Feel free to share your own thoughts and criticisms.

To frighten their foes, it would scare the -Yoink- out of me. Their heads are so large, like 2 ft long and the scream would be ear piercing. It’s the stuff of nightmares man.
I think it’s pretty freaking awesome. And I equate it to the Elite ‘rage’ when they lose shields. They do the ‘GRRRRRRRR IM ANGRY NOW’ thing and then go into rage. I figure it’s similar in that the Knight is so enraged that it screams right before it’s about to go nuts. I don’t have a problem with it at all, unless they do it like every mission in H4.

The scene from the E3 build and the Forerunner returns ViDoc is the SAME, they changed the colors etc. but kept the animation, the E3 mission will be different on Nov. 6th, it was changed to impress the public and to present the Prometheans so, yeah.
The other one is just a Trailer, it’s supposed to create hype so yeah, it was cool to add that.
Prometheans are confirmed to “open” their face when you make them 1-shot, even at distance.
I suppose for the reason dogs bark and growl at each other, and some people taunt and laugh as they fight. It is also rather intimidating, and I’ve only seen them do it when they’ve pinned (disabled) their enemy, so there’s minimal backlash. I think it’s pretty awesome.

> Ah… My friend, that is why you are not a spartan.
Haha -Yoink- that’s too true. I take it back!.. My body is ready.
haha it looks funny when you put them all side by side. the prometheans just really like chief i guess. they pounce and go in for a kiss. chief is like “no -Yoink!-” and back-hands the prometheans every time.
I guess this is the Promethean equivalent of an Elite roaring at you.
With the Elite is makes sense… but with the Promethean it makes no sense whatsoever.
For starters; why do they have holographic skulls? Why would anyone be scared by it? Why would a Forerunner design the Knight to have a holographic skull under that helmet that opens up like that?
> “Hey we’ve nearly finished the Promethean Knight design. It’s 12 foot tall, can use a multitude of weapons, can teleport and has its own support Sentinel.”
> “Hmmm I really like it but… I don’t know… it needs a little something extra you know?”
> “Really? Like what?”
> “Hmmm… well how about we give it a holographic skull underneath its helmet and when its angry it can open up the helmet and you can see the holographic skull underneath and its all scaaaarey and stuff?”
> “Sure why not.”
It doesn’t make any sense canonically. My suspicion is that since Promethean Knights were originally organic Forerunner in suits that the skull (and the tiny arms) at one point made perfect sense, but then 343i decided they were no longer organic Forerunners inside the suits but didn’t change the design. So its basically a hangover from the earlier design.
But really, I don’t think they do it that much, they probably do it when the Prometheans are first introduced, and a couple times later, It could possibly be like a thing they do when they are about to execute someone, but Chief punches them and fights them.
