So who slipstreamed the Spirit of Fire to the Ark?

In the near beginning of Halo Wars 2 it is said that something - or someone - openend a slipstream portal to bring the UNSC Spirit of Fire to the Ark… Well who? It was never revealed. Is it just one of those bad one-time mentioned events that is needed for the story but never questioned again or was there something I missed or maybe will it be explained in Halo 6?

Could also be explained in story DLC for HW2. But no, it wasn’t explained in the base game.

This plothole actually really bugged me. I can’t believe they missed such an important detail.

I was hoping they’d mention Mendicant Bias but nope, they just kind of forgot about the issue.

99% guaranteed to be Mendicant Bias. He closed the Ark Portal in a way to deliberately send Chief to Requiem, and with Tragic Solitude destroyed he’s the only being on the Ark with the power to open and close the Portal.

Not trolling, but looking at the sequence of events the SoF crew had to deal with the portal opening was pushed down the ladder of importance.
Exit portal, holy -Yoink- UNSC frequency the first humans they have encountered in 30 years.
Check out outpost and holy -Yoink- everyone is dead and there is this crazy brute that just manhandled a spartan.
Deal with brute (somewhat) and his forces (not really).
Last holy -Yoink- here but the professor just disappeared with this gigantic halo thing. And that crazy brute still has an army on the arc.
See where the opening portal can become a non factor?

Campaign DLC could answer this.

Usually I would agree with you. But this is a HUGE plot point. It’s the entire establishment of the setting! And as of right now the only excuse is that they were disorganized in the writing process and either they missed the plot hole entirely or by the time they picked up on it, development was too far along to change it.

That being said. It’s not that big of a deal and it will probably be answered in expanded material or DLC later.

When the Spirit of Fire got to the Ark, Atriox was in control of the portal matrix. If they don’t bring Bias into this, it’s probably going to be Atriox learning to use the portal system and accidentally brings his own doom upon him.

That is my one dislike about the halo franchise now. We probably won’t get the answer in the game of halo wars 2 but in a comic or briefly in the introduction of halo 6 or some other game.
Still a little miffed about the Janus (spelling?) Key from halo 4 and spartan ops. Only for it to be dropped by halo 5.
I get what they are doing from a business standpoint it’s just hard to keep up with everything lore wise. Off topic rant over. My apologies.

What if Cortana is playing them? She wanted a halo. She played the SOF the send her one. She was obviously ready to intercept it.

That’s what I was hoping, also maybe the campaign logs or the phoenix logs might shed some light on it?

This. My biggest issue with Halo 5 was that you really couldn’t appreciate the story with out having read all of the books. At least with the other games they stood on their own and the books were just an added bonus.

The sequence of events line up, and considering the last cut scene I can see this line of thinking. Assuming she still has the index for installation 4 and this is yet another replacement for it it makes sense that she would need that specific Halo and not any of the others. My only doubt is that, if I recall correctly, Anders disabled it’s firing capabilities, making it only usable to Cortana as a bluff. In that case, wouldn’t any of the installations work?

I honestly think that 4 relied more on the books. Halo 5 didn’t really benefit from any of the expanded lore. In fact, it disregarded a bunch of it.

Since Cortana now has a vast knowledge of the Forerunners, i’m sure she can turn them back on.

Anecdotal evidence, my friend who never read any of the books asked “who are those Spartans with the chief?” The game itself doesn’t address who they are very well for the people not keeping up. For me on the other hand it’s like oh snap mofuckin blue team about tear some -Yoink- up.

More on topic -slightly- my fiance asked why Cortana went nuts. As soon as I said she “died” in halo 4 she tuned out and had none of it from then on. “They can’t kill Cortona”

That’s actually not a bad idea, the guardian showed up to the ring for a reason, so it’s very possible.

I’m a little miffed about the diverging directions of the expanded universe and the games. In the games, they’re focusing on the forerunners and banished as enemies, in the expanded universe, they’re focusing on Humanity getting supreme power in the universe and becoming tyrannical through ONI, very much setting the tone for humanity to be the enemy of the player character in the games. All of that is completely ignored, and the Janus key is the biggest example of a probable retcon I’ve seen yet.
