So whats wrong with forge maps?

Honestly I would like to know.

Is it an aesthetic thing? Because that’s really all I believe it is.

Back in the reach days if I recall many of the best maps were made in forge.
Some examples of some pretty maps that weren’t made in forge in reach that played awful.

Spire, reflection, sword base, boneyard , and powerhouse(that was the name right?)

Take those maps that played very bad and compare them to maps like pinnacle, uncaged, hermorphage (spelled it wrong and tbh I hated that over picked map) and some other forge made ones that played good.

I don’t find forge maps lazy because first of all they have to build it from scratch on a canvus. They have to come up with an idea for the forge map they want to build, once they have the idea they have to build it, after they build it they then have to fix it aka (make sure everything is aligned correctly, make sure there is no gaps), and then sometimes when they build something they may decide to change the layout or positioning of items, then there’s making sure the spawns are correct and working, and now in this forge you have to worry about lighting and other things. These things take days or sometimes weeks to make and its definitely not lazy.

Also when I’m reading them call it a “free update” I don’t think it means dlc because if it was dlc they would have called it that.

The only thing forge maps lack is different textures, alien themed items (which should be added) and maps, and different backgrounds (for the open area maps) other than that there’s really no difference between the two

^This without the cursing. I took a walk around one of the maps and I realized how much 343i really cares about its community.

sword base was fun IMO, yeah it had a couple issues. But those issues were amusing and fun. Really forge maps have always looked like crap, they looked bad in Reach…they look bad now. But at least the lighting and atmosphere on these maps is better/improved. My only issue with this update is that the REQs are totally absent from the game. I’ve been opening packs and apparently the new stuff actually ISN’T IN THE GAME…so don’t tell me the light dark ninja BS is in the update when it really was left out.

Its an update… things get added in updates. If it was supposed to be apart of the free dlc why not call it dlc like they did in halo 4? Makes no sense

Anyway as for textures yes I think they should implement foregable textures in forge (probably wont happen in this game) along with promethian and covenant themed items.

Can you give any detail on how the map layout suck? Or is it just going to be mindless rambling?

Edit. Technically game updates are free, they promised you btb and they gave you btb in a game update. Its not like they charged you for it

As for reqs, im pretty sure they’re there but you have to remember rng is still is in the game. I don’t know the calculations for their rng system but I don’t believe they’ll just hand you what you want… and sadly thats the issue with any rng based system

I would actually say they look worse now than in Reach. At least forgers could work around the blandness by using more heavily textured surfaces, but everything now is just a single colour with no detail at all. The Goldeneye comparison made earlier was great, it really feels like I took a trip back to the 90’s while playing the indoor areas.

And the lighting is honestly my biggest gripe with it all, it just feels disorienting and harsh with the way the sun pierces straight through the screen.

The maps are so bland. Every walkway, road, walls, and ceiling have no texture. It honestly looks like the maps aren’t complete yet and that it’s just a framework for the maps. It truly sucks that all BTB maps will look like this.

6. ranked matches…yet players add/drop non stop. and sometimes you’re even forced to late join the losing team.

It actually might be the worst BTB in terms of map aethestics. But of course there are players who are just happy that 343i was kind enough to bring in BTB to the good players. They just care that it’s there but seriously, 343i has to be more active and makes real maps.

I don’t think every btb map will look like that only the forge ones. I do believe there will be non forge btb maps that will end up being made and put into the game. People disliked reach’s forge maps look but at least the forge pieces in that game had some texture. I highly believe 343 needs to either get a new forge artist to design the pieces or add in textures that we can put on the items into forge.

It shouldn’t be too hard of a task since they implemented decals in forge.

In anyway I believe they decided to go with forge maps first just to get btb out there to test it.

I played like 15 game just now! Btb is everything I expected it to be! Maps layout are great and fun to play! They look like good! Not spectacular but good!

enjoy them! We are 2 week from releases! And in a world of season pass all dlc will be free! Stop crying!

Whats wrong with the maps? how about whats good in these maps. Very short list in the 2nd view. Basically they know nothing about map mechanics and put things wherever their blind hearts desire. The forge maps in Reach? not bad, though it could have been improved. The real maps are ok (Reach) but they were mainly designed for one game mode, like invasion or headhunter.

Design seems great, visuals are poor compared to a hand crafted map. I think that’s it.

I understand that mashing a fixed texture between objects is ugly, but so is bland. Solution, create the map with bland objects and load the map with a texture program, sorta like texture packs in minecraft, but where the computer detects walls, ceilings, bridges, etc… and wallpapers them accordingly based on a selected texture pack or a map default one. (example: space map has forerunner skin, mountain has rocky, presets that match the surroundings.). This wouldnt change the structure just the appearance like a green screen.

This would be the simplest solution all around except on 343s part, but it shows dedication and effort, so, get to it.

Thing with mine craft is that everything in that game is designed with low poly counts so it’s easier to do something like you explained in that game as opposed to this one. Not saying it isn’t a bad idea I don’t think it will work.

The easiest thing they could do is periodically add in multiple versions of an item into forge. It’ll be something similar to the skin system so for example you have gray wall (which is the default), you then have gray wall with hole in it, gray wall with burn damage, gray wall with scratches, and other things.

Also to keep things fresh they should add in more forge canvases

Yeah its basically just the aesthetics. The Reach forge pieces looked so much better. These look like play-do (hard truth).

My only complaint is that they are about half the size they use to be. I can’t wait for forge to come out and someone actually makes the full size Valhalla/Blood Gulch map that you really need a vehicle to cross in a decent amount of time as well as offers the long sight lines for snipers.

Basically. But the amount of work that goes into creating and tuning a map in Forge is no joke, I think people find that too easy to forget sometimes. Even though the textures aren’t great, the maps are still the result of months of hard work. But gratitude/praise seems to be somewhat lacking in this community of late for some reason, which is disappointing.
