Seeing that they all shot like storm troopers they figured that they could shoot enough to kill 1 guy. They were wrong.
When the totem is 4 Spartan high, it release a force shield around protecting them from any kind of bullets and that for 5 minutes. They must be coordinate and move slowly as if one Spartan fell and break the totem, the force shield goes down with it.

In all seriousness, I think they might have been trying to either get atop of some part of the map… OR they think they can AFK and not get banned if they’re stacked up.
