So what is Bastion and who was the Foreunner?

Some location or being known as Bastion is mentioned multiple times by an unknown Forerunner Builder in Halo 5’s intel.

Forerunner Record: Search 1/5
“With Bastion beyond my grasp, I turned to the possibility of the Domain. However, there is corruption. The source, untraceable. Investigations, but no returns. Time grows short.”

Forerunner Record: Search 2/5
“Acquisition of a durance proved difficult in these final days. An ancilla has agreed to aid my efforts, yet there is concern if he will carry through. However, if Bastion has indeed achieved the impossible, I must find a way of reaching them. If that path be through death and Domain, so be it.”

Forerunner Record: Search 3/5
“Bastion is absent. Not destroyed; simply missing. No other facility is near enough. A new course of action is required.”

Forerunner Record: Search 4/5
“Bastion’s location is confirmed. How, though? After dispersal of the Halos, an impossible act of reconciliation would be required. It may still be possible.”

Forerunner Record: Search 5/5
“It’s time. I go now… To Bastion.”

Forerunner Record: Echoes 1/3
“Where, where am I?! Is this the Domain?”

Forerunner Record: Echoes 2/3
Designation: Genesis. How? Where is Bastion?"

Forerunner Record: Echoes 3/3
“Communications few. Constructor network picking up echoes. Confusing.”

Forerunner Record: Threat 1/5
“Organon gone. Domain burned, damaged. So many lost, missing.”

Forerunner Record: Threat 2/5
“The Warden made a pact…with whom? How does he walk once more?”

Forerunner Record: Threat 3/5
“Ancilla? New. How?”

Forerunner Record: Threat 4/5
“Show yourselves. She cures… herself. Soon. Domain.”

Forerunner Record: Threat 5/5
“The Guardians. She sees them. She understands. Stop her!”

Forerunner Record: Alive 1/5
“The ancilla, she knows I’m here. She hunts me.”

Forerunner Record: Alive 2/5
“Bastion.”

Forerunner Record: Alive 3/5
“Constructor not work under Warden control. Control can be taken back. External, though. The Monitor could help if only I could speak to her.”

Forerunner Record: Alive 4/5
“Bastion. Bastion.”

Forerunner Record: Alive 5/5
“Ancilla distracted. Warden as well. Domain repairing. Healing. I feel clear for the first time in…there. Finally, I see. After so long! Bastion. Bastion still lives!”

After this we hear no more of this unknown Builder or of Bastion. What is interesting to note is it seems this Forerunner somehow survived into the modern era of 2558. He mentions what is clearly Cortana and the Warden…how? What could this mean?

Running theory says Bastion is where the surviving Forerunner went. I think the Forerunner is just some Builder, no one special.

The forerunner (whom seems to be a new character) survived by preserving his essence in a durance. this is similar to the Librarian AI encountered in Halo 4. As for Bastion, it seems to be an installation or planet. it is possibly the location of the forerunners that survived the firing of the Halo array.

ps. if the domain is repaired and the builder can see Bastion, who else can?

But thats not him then, thats an imprint. What we see in Halo 4 is NOT the Librarian, she is dead. If thats all this builder did then he is dead as well.

Wild speculation: the last living forerunners living in the bastion team up with humans in halo 6 against cortana. Would be great, but probably far fetched.

Probably somewhere we have to go in Halo 6

I believe this is what will happen in Halo 6

I really don’t see Chief going all bro code with some aliens and back handing Cortana. Iam noticing a lot of theories based around that sentiment.

Remember, humanity is meant to assume the Mantle, essentially begging the Forerunners for help runs counter to that. It’s far more likely that it transpires that Cortana was being controlled or she has a change of heart.

If they appear it’s more likely that they would have similar intentions to the Didact and betray the humans once Cortana was contained. Also, a second Forerunner faction?

It’s worth noting that Forerunner related terms often hint at their purpose in the meaning of the word.

Bastion:

  • a place or system in which something (such as an old-fashioned idea) continues to survive - a fortified area or positionTo me this suggests that Bastion is a location where the Forerunners/their society lives on in some form, perhaps a more effective form of Composition than what was shown in the Forerunner trilogy and Halo 4, perhaps it’s simply a group of survivors. Search 4/5 carries the most support to it being a location, as it mentions the reconciliation that would be required, apparently quite a large act, to move Bastion. This suggests the location was moved via slipspace. My guess would be that it was a shelter for the Builders, somehow different to the Didact’s shield worlds.
