So what is a deranker?

I remember from when I used to frequently play Halo 3, there were people who called themselves derankers and kept quitting matches. I never really saw the point in doing that, and all it did was make the game frustrating form me to play (I can’t stand when people quit games without a legitimate reason).

Anyways, can someone explain to me what that was all about? I know it had to do with exploiting the Halo 3 ranking system somehow, but I just never understood what the intentions were.

I just learned something!

Wow…that’s really sad that people would actually waste time to do something like that in a video game. I mean, there are so many better things to be doing. And if you want to play a game, just play the game. Don’t make it a bad experience for other people. I tihnk that the fact that there aren’t as many of these people in Reach (or so it seems to me, at least) is one of the reason’s I prefer their ranking system.

Anyways, thank you very much for the reply

Deranking accounts abused the TrueSkill system -Yoink!- research has developed. They purposely lost hundreds or thousands of games so when they were matched up with any person, the team they would be on is projected to lose. Because they are projected to lose and they win with a friend on that team they move up in ranks faster. Projected to lose and win = big level gain, projected to win and lose = big level loss.

Derankers is the #1 reason why I disliked MM in Halo 3, plus it made it very difficult to rank up when you’re paired with a bunch of randoms. I’m still surprised Bungie never fixed that oversight.
