So what happened to that "hidden rank" in quick play

People always mention this so why on earth am I getting team mates unable to aim in the slightest versing actual good players? If this system was actually a thing it wouldn’t put people on my team that struggle to hit 1 bullet with an AR against people who get perfects with a sidekick…

I had a swat game recently where I went 42-7 AND LOST

teammates went:

4-15
1-17
0-12

Essentially it was a 1v7

SBMM doesn’t necessarily mean that your Teammates are of similar skill to you, only that you will play against another team of the same average skill. Could be that you have an Onyx and 3 golds/plat on one team and mid diamonds on the opposing team. Completely ‘balanced’ in terms of SBMM

So every game 343 expects me to sweat my hardest just to get a W. Absolute garbage system , I don’t want to carry these bots every 2nd game I hop on

I feel you. I play alot with a full stack of friends and I’m currently D6 with friends in gold/Plat. Sometimes we go up against full diamonds, sometimes it’s a 2 high 2 low split. Either way leaves one team feeling terrible. Either my Teammates will be severely outclassed or it’s a kill rase between top-fraggers.

There’s no perfect system or solution.

I’m not sure a random system where I pubstomp 95% of players would be satisfying either. It’s annoying having a game where you’re expected to hard carry for your team to stand a chance but I guess that can be more entertaining than playing social game consisting of only Onyx and Champion level players (cough Halo 5).

I dont mind a mix but at least make it equal for both teams, the difference between was far to high.

I died and could see them struggling just to aim the AR, they was all over the place and barely hit a bullet. It’s not fun for them to verse players who can near perfect the sidekick each time or for me to basically be stuck in a lost battle. No one on our team was gonna have fun that match

By that logic the game is trying to complement me, I dont feel that way I feel punished instead lol. I’m also not high in ranked as I dont play it

A good SBMM will do exactly that

It doesn’t even do that, since 70-90% of all matches are completely one-sided.

I was smashing it and wondering why we was losing and then I found out they was working with them

LMAO  I want an option to have bots on my team instead of these brain dead players

It absolutely does do this. After a social game, go into “Last Game Results” and then go to the tab where you can see each team’s spartans grouped together. Under the player list for each team, you will see each team’s “Average MMR”. I’ve found that these values are always very close together.

I agree that it needs to also take into account how it gets to these values though. For example:

Team 1 can have a 1500 Onyx, and 3 700s - Average MMR: 900
Team 2 can have 4 900s = Average MMR: 900

9 times out of 10, team 2 is getting absolutely demolished by the Onyx player, but the game sees no problem with this because the average MMR was spot on for both teams.

Instead, they need to do exactly what you mentioned the first half of your comment, they need to find players on each team to counteract each other as close as they can, and the average will naturally be close. For example:

Team 1: 1505, 1470, 980, 820 - Average MMR: 1193.75
Team 2: 1498, 1475, 970, 850 - Average MMR: 1198.25

This game may have a higher difference between average MMR, but will be a much better game than example 1.

Agreed. It’s not a great system. It’s ok for solo queue, but for friends of different skill levels, it’s abysmal. A friend of a lower skill level will almost never be able to frag out even if they are above average skill lvl.

Also agree. But this is why I always liked the divide of social vs ranked. SBMM just needs tweaked somehow in the social playlists.

I think fundamentally we have to consider what it’s like playing any game with friends of a different skill level. If I choose to play Mortal Kombat with my friend who doesn’t play fighting games, then he’s not going to be able to land a hit. Even my cousin who loves the series could only ever give me a challenge when he played his main and I played my worst characters.

There comes a point where the game becomes less fun for you if you play with a lower skill level player to accommodate them, or less fun for them if you don’t. With Halo I have a separate account to play with my worse friends and use mouse and keyboard. Even that isn’t enough for some of them to be able to slay, some of them I follow round and weaken enemies so they can finish them off. Obviously they don’t know I’m doing this. Sometimes I play Overwatch as a healer and just put all my energy into keeping my one friend alive and he has a blast.

Yes there is. Do what halo 2 and 3 did. Connection based matchmaking for social, skill based matchmaking for ranked. I will never understand why Bungie and now 343 have refused to use the most successful matchmaking structure in the history of their franchise.

This is a perfect solution because it fully empowers players to choose which set of pros/cons they want at any given time.

Removing one option entirely will necessarily result in a worse overall matchmaking experience, because it is essentially the devs dictating to players how they must play.

Halo 2 and 3 both used skill based matchmaking in social.

Halo 2 definitely didn’t. Would love to see a source on the claim that H3 used SBMM in social, because I have no memories of getting matched against other 50s in social H3.

Only time I seen SBMM in social for Halo 2 and 3, was in MCC.

The Og’s nope. The SBMM is not cash. It finds bottom feeders and puts them on your team while you are fighting sigma males that the Master Chief looks up to.

I understand why you would do this, but there are 2 problems with this. “Smurfing” is a ban-able offense (not that it ever is punished) and the battle pass…I dont want to ‘waste’ any of my time on a second account when it’s hard enough for me to get all the exp I need to complete the current battle pass on my main account.

I always seem to get put up against the sweatiest players in the game, and have teammates that use the controller with their feet. Not a clue how it works, but I’d love for SBMM rank to be visible, so everyone can finally stop speculating guesses. Maybe the system is busted, but we can’t see it to prove it. I practically have to throw my K/D in the trash and solo the objective every game, not that I care about my K/D, but I do enjoy actually winning matches
