I was going back through the Halo Infinite Multiplayer Overview video to refresh my memory of what was described when it came to the Battle Pass, because I distinctly remember thinking that 343’s approach to Battle Passes was very player friendly.
Well when they’re talking about Battle Pass in the video, they made a big deal about players either being able to buy things from the store, or being forced to play the game to progress their Battle Pass. Specifically:
“If you can unlock something from the battle pass, we’re not gonna let any other player circumvent that by purchasing it out of the storefront.”
Also:
“A lot of our stuff is unlocked through playing the game, and ONLY through playing the game.”
I can’t include links, but this is from the Halo Infinite Multiplayer Overview video, timestamp 8:16
I feel like the spirit of these statements isn’t reflected in what the Battle Pass currently offers. It certainly makes it sound like players wouldn’t have the option of “buying” these cosmetics (for 200 credits a level, you can get straight to max and unlock everything without spending any time in the game, right?).
So my question is: Are there a lot of cosmetics that I’m not aware of that can be unlocked ONLY through playing the game? Or was there just a huge reversal when it came to the Battle Pass?
Well if they meant the Battle Pass, then they had to have done a huge reversal. Because they made it a point that you couldn’t buy these cosmetics, you had to earn them.
It’s hard to defend their public stances on some core features in the game & how they were implemented, coatings are not better than what we had before & the fact I have to pay for a colour is just disheartening.
I wish they weren’t so vague on the features before launch so we could’ve provided feedback but then again coatings have been discussed to death & they made no changes, it’s a shame.
Well they technically didn’t lie, cause you can’t purchase those items from the in-game store itself. Like the flaming effects will never be on the store for example.
So sure, they didn’t really lie or do a “reversal,” they just intentionally left out details. That said, it was kind of a given you’d be able to buy tiers considering it is, well, a Battle Pass.
Sure the first quote “technically” wasn’t a lie or a reversal. But the second quote clearly said: “A lot of our stuff is unlocked through playing the game, and ONLY through playing the game.”
There will be stuff you can unlock via the campaign, the Weekly Ultimate Rewards can only be gained through gameplay, and assuming the Fracture Event tiers can’t be bought, that would cover the stuff they were referencing.
Now, if Fracture Event tiers CAN be bought, and Ultimate Rewards are eventually added to the store, then they would 100% be lying.
