I’m not sure how it encourages spending. I haven’t spent a cent on the game (aside from BP and the blue halo) and since it launched in November and have only played it an average of 1.1h per day. I haven’t missed a challenge or event unlock, they’re not really that hard to get and don’t take nearly as much time as people make it seem.
Exactly my point too, if you want the unlocks then play the game. If you don’t want them, then don’t play. Just don’t complain that you didn’t get them for free because you’ve been a loyal fan since Halo CE.
My favorite mode is BTB but I hate playing it atm because I know I’m not unlocking the stuff that’s limited and time gated in LSS. Again, we are just asking not to be pigeon holed into modes we don’t wanna play without missing out on the only obtainable ‘new’ content outside of the battle pass. Now if interference had more game modes? Sure. But grinding out challenges (that don’t even update until the match finishes whether you’re in it or not) in one game mode that’s a modified FFA-
@Ken_CTF 's post above describes a challenge system that would ensure players would have stuff to work towards at their discretion. I wholly agree that Infinite would be a better game and more engaging if you could choose what you work towards. That way if I wanna play BTB I won’t feel any anxiousness about ‘time waste’ in regard to limited rewards.
But if you don’t think this would be good I just can’t see why not.
“FOMO only exists if you let yourself be carried away by it”
There is literally only one progression system that is not behind a paywall. If that single progression system also has a clearly evident FOMO system associated with it, what do we do?
Well, we do the obvious thing, we stop playing because this is not a job and I don’t have to spend every week waiting to complete weekly challenges that the only thing that causes me is that I feel bad playing and don’t enjoy the experience, there are the player numbers plummeting.
But nothing happens, fellow Major doesn’t see any problem because HE doesn’t have that problem, and since HE doesn’t have the problem then it doesn’t matter.
Why anyone would defend a games system that is losing it’s own player base is truly beyond me.
The challenges are designed to get you to play a variety of game modes, which is fine IMO. The issue I have is that the are too specific. I think that modes need to be removed from them and instead make them objective based. Capture X number of points, Grab the flag X times. Etc. Challenges that are able to be completed from 3 or 4 different game types instead of trying to get a bloody stronghold match.
What progression system are you talking about thats not behind a paywall that has fomo, their LIMITED EVENTS that are limited, you know, the whole point of them.
Its also a FREE game, This game model has been around for nearly a decade. It was a matter of time before halo adopted it.
But like, what if there was a way to just play the game, have fun, and unlock stuff when you want to focus on it? “Oh that headgear looks neat, I’mma select the [event name here] pass and work on that for now” “Okay, now that that’s done lemme load up my BTB challenges” etc etc
I’d play a lot more than I do now I think.
Maybe we just disagree that limited events should be a thing. I for one, believe this game needs all the avenues of content it can get without time gating modes.
I’m obviously talking about the only way we have to get any kind of progression outside of the events, the weekly challenges.
Absolutely no one asked for Halo multiplayer to be free, no one.
Its losing the player base because people are puppies and need a treat every 30 seconds. Halo has never been that, you need to EARN your gear, whether thats through events or challenges. If you dont want to miss out then dont, its really simple. And if you choose not to complete them then dont complain that you missed out. The game rewards players for playing the game, not for commenting on a forum.
Yeah, you’re right, Halo has never been that.
If the servers were still up, I could still go earn credits in Reach and unlock nearly every item in the game just like at launch! Same for Halo 4. Even Halo 5 only had time limits on a very small hand full of customization (namely Achilles, the Reach helmet pack, and the Announcer Voices).
Nothing happens, let’s listen to Major, the problem is us. Does not matter. We will see how the health of the game is going in 6 months continuing with this system.
Is it really a “FOMO” system if the items are on rotation with the knowledge that the items will return at some point?
It sounds to me like a hyperbolic statement to suggest the store items are based on a FOMO model, more of a “Annoyance of having to wait another few weeks/months” type model.
Let’s compare that to Rust where cosmetics are only available for a single time at a base price, and after those items are available through second hand (player, not developer) sales below/at/above their original market price.
Additionally, people have jobs. Some of our jobs include disappearing for weeks on end to suit the whims of uncle sam. It’s not an engaging formula for anyone but people within very particular life models.
So this is about Infinite being piled on? And not about the issues players are facing?
Name any other Halo game with FOMO issues.
The truth is that the arguments in favor of this challenge system are convincing me:
- I don’t have that problem.
- Others do worse.
Without a doubt, this is the best system to keep players hooked to the game so that they don’t feel bad and enjoy the multiplayer.
The game is perfect the way it is, that’s why it’s climbing the charts!
Everything is so amazing and so great with grinding for unlocks!
Everyone I bump into online and all over social media from the pro community to the casuals are all clamoring for more of whatever this is.
The only thing of value from this game is the core gameplay loop, the rest is pain. Like a nice demo that you keep playing over and over, waiting for the release date.
You’re acting like this game is different, The battle pass persists between seasons. Everything aside from limited items is obtainable forever.
Why is everyone still comparing it to other halo games, its not those games and wont be them. The challenges and limited unlocks make sense for todays market. Literally the only issue is the challenge system being tied to events and that the challenges are too specific. Fix that and leave the rest alone.
Halo Infinite is the only game in the series with the FOMO stuff in place.
That’s the point I was making. This isn’t a Halo Infinite hitpiece. These problems are legit. The whole system needs to be replaced with ranks and commendations.
