So, I’ve heard somewhere that the books are going to make the story of the game much more rich and deep for those that have read them.
I used to read the Halo books, but have since developed mild depression (Boo hoo, right?) which makes it pretty difficult for me to concentrate on reading for too long, so I haven’t really been able to read a book for quite a while.
As a huge Halo fan (Been with this series since Halo CE’s release and pretty much only own a console for the Halo games), how alienated am I going to be?
I don’t mean to complain, I think it’s amazing that they’recombining the different media they have at their disposal, I’m just concerned that I’m going to be missing out on a lot.
Also, quick sub-topic note, I have considered trying to find an audio-book version of the books I haven’t read (All since Ghosts of Onyx) to catch up, but since I’ve never tried an audio book before, I’m not sure how successful that would be.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you didn’t, here’s the gist; As a hardcore Halo fan, how much am I going to be missing out in the new trilogy by not reading the books?
It won’t be “what the hell is going on?!” type alienation, it just makes the story seem a little cooler, but you’ll still have a great experience.
Or so I hear.
and Audiobooks help me, at least, understand the story a bit better, it really helped me with Primordium.
If you want, you should get them off of iTunes and listen to them on your mobile device if you have one.

So I should still be able to follow along and not feel like I’m missing too much?
I don’t want there to be something like;
(Not a Spoiler, genuinely never read any of the newer books!)
Chief is cornered and about to die when suddenly three random Spartan-II’s jump out and save him and it’s meant to be a really big moment where the audience is like ‘Oh! That’s Jim, Sally and Jenny from [Book title here]!’
And I do have a smart phone, so I could do that. You said audio books help you to understand the story better? That gives me a little hope that I’ll be able to concentrate for longer periods on them. Thanks a lot!
Although if you have any specific versions you’d recommend, that would be helpful (I know sometimes there are different readers and some are good and some are bad. I don’t know if the Halo books have multiple versions of readers or not.
Just looking now. I can see Grasslands, cryptum and Primordium.
The rest I’ve read or at least tried to read at some point, but I keep hearing about these three on the forums so I presume they’re fairly important.
What order should I listen to these? Or are there any others that may be references in Halo 4 in a substantial way?

Depends on what you want to learn about first.
Cryptum and then primordium if you want to learn about forerunners and prehistoric humans.
glasslands if you want to learn about humanity after Halo 3 and what’s going on with the infinity, Spartan IVs, all that business.

They both actually sound really interesting. Thanks for taking the time to help me with this. Much appreciated!
I thought that when I used to read them, but didn’t want to come off as whiny. But if they’re going to help the enjoyment of Halo 4, then I really don’t want to just ignore them.
Frankie has said that you don’t need to read the books to know what’s going on in the game, but I would read them anyways if you are really into the Halo lore.
So basicly if you really want to limit your questions when the game comes along… go ahead and read them.
If you would really like to read some books that will enrich the Halo 4 story, there are 3 (soon to be 4) that you’ll want to read.
Forerunner Trilogy:
Cryptum- follows the story of a young Forerunner called Bornstellar Makes Eternal Lasting, who meets the legendary Didact and learns of ancient secrets kept for thousands of years.
Primordium- continues the story from Chakas’ point of view. Chakas was a human Bornstellar met in Cryptum, but were separated near the end. The overall story is being told as a group of ONI Scientists interrogate a damaged Monitor claiming to be Chakas.
Kilo Five Trilogy:
Glasslands- the war is over. The Covenant have broken up and are returning to their homeworlds. For the Sangheli, new problems are arising involving their old way of life and Humans. Humanity must recover, but ONI has a plan to keep the old Covenant off of their backs.
The Thursday War- released on October 5th. I can’t give you a description because I haven’t read it.
Note: Those are my descriptions.
Those 4 books are the ones you’ll want to read, they have the most connections to Halo 4. Silentium, the conclusion to the Forerunner Trilogy comes after Halo 4 because of its direct spoilers.
The books and the games are now going to tie into each other. So that way if you read and play, the overall story experience will be a lot better. Rather then Bungie doing whatever they want and completely ignoring the books.
Frankie said that you can follow all parts of the story without a problem, with or without the books. The books are just there to make it more interesting.
