So the aiming in this game.....

I remember hearing in passing the explanation on the aiming system, but I didn’t really look into. As I play Halo 5, the aiming is a huge problem for me. I have been able to adapt to it to some extent, but I’m trying to understand what is causing it to feel so different from every other Halo game.

It feels to me as if the aim assist has been greatly turned down which isn’t a good idea for a console FPS. If this issue was address in an update that allowed for a “classic” aiming system it would go a long way in my enjoyment of Halo 5.

I like how the aim assist is much lower, this allows for a more true aim. I hated when an enemy would walk past me and my reticule will follow them. I would rather not have the game aim for me.

The aim assist was allegedly lowered to increase skill gap, imo this is a good thing.
Aim acceleration increased from previous halos to assist with making 180 turns. (how quickly cross-hair reaches full speed from player input)

I could be wrong, but I feel like there is still a bit of aim assist. I just think they nerfed the range to how far the autoaim works. In Halo 4, you got sticky aim within the range of the ridicule turning red. I am not sure how it works in Halo 5. I prefer games with less autoaim, and in my opinion lowering the sticky aim is a good thing.

There is a bit, or course, because it is a requirement for a console shooter. To off set it a bit though, they do have a fair amount of “bullet magnetism.”

aim assist as been toned down magnetism has been increased and they comepltely changed the aiming mechanic from the beta

The new aiming mechanic has a two turn style system
from 0% - 75% radius in thumbstick movement is precision aiming mode
from 76% - 100% in thumbstick movement is turn mode
(please note that these are not the actual figures for the turn modes and only used as a for instance representation)

Now the problem is that this aim mechanic combines with massive deadzones in the controller makes it so that precision aim mode is far far too slow especially while trying to aim diagonally, and turn mode is way too fast and there is no smooth transition between the two

So you’re in a gun battle, you’re trying to hit an opponent, but he thrusts, you try to follow him in precision aim mode but its too slow, so you push further on your thumbstick and hit that 71% and suddenly shoot off into no where

This is the problem with the aiming

I would much rather they just go back to the aiming in the beta it was much smoother, or at the very least give us presets in the new advanced controller options to go back to the beta or even previous halos

I have a love/hate relationship with bullet magnetism. While I absolutely love pulling off ridiculous shots with the sniper, it can get pretty annoying when someone does it to you.

The game does have aim assist but way lower than other Halo games. If there is totaly no bullet magnetism the game would be unplayble, couse it is a game and it needs some. I like it this way, as prevoius people wrote shows more skill, skill gap. The new update will have deadzone adjusments and look acceleration, so i cant wait to play with that. I probably just lower the outer deadzone like 2,3 percent and a drasticly increase the look acceleration.

This new aiming skill gap, is a different kind of skill that the multiplayers of previous Halo games featured. Sure being able to hit the target was always a part of the game, but

This makes more sense. It often times feels like I fighting the game just as much as I am the enemy players, when this occurs and it gets very frustrating. Hopefully 343i will address this issue in an upcoming update. It won’t make me a fan of 343i or their Halo games, but it would definitely be a good way to start turning things around for me.

Yesterday I was really frustrated by this. I was barely pulling off a zero kill/death spread in halo 5, which is frustrating because I am usually pretty decent at halo games. Switched over to halo MC and my first game I dominated in a halo 3 match. I then switched back to halo 5 and kept adjusting the settings until it “felt” like the previous games. I turned the Look Acceleration down to 1 and sensitivity to 7 from 10 annnd VOILA! I’m back!

It’s so crazy, I immediately started getting “perfect” 4 shot kills in regular matches and lots of double/triple kills in swat, the same way I was used to from previous games. I haven’t had a chance to try it out with a sniper rifle, but I’m pretty sure the look acceleration is the issue, not the auto aim.

It isn’t that I happened to get easy opponents, because before I changed the settings I simply COULD NOT make even easy head shots on people moving slowly in a straight line lol. I’m so excited to play more now that I can be good again! It was silly to have to play older titles to be MVP.

I suggest trying the same adjustments that I did, the look acceleration option is only available as of the December update.

what did you set your dead zones at? 0%?

I can confirm this. I have used almost every combo and when I hit these settings last night my accuracy approved 15-20% instantly. It feels almost identical to BO3 5 sens.

My settings w/ Elite Controller
Look Sense: 7
Acceleration: 1
Inner: 0%
Outer: 5%
Elite stick profile: Default

They included the option to change aim acceleration. I changed mine and it helped with the aiming drastically. Play around with yours and it should help. I was also having trouble with the weird aiming of Halo 5 and i changed my aim acceleration to zero and now my shots are way more on point.

My suggestion for you is to tinker with your aim acceleration. It’s default state is 3 and 2 is the way the aiming acceleration worked in the beta. For the more traditional way you could set your aim acceleration to the lowest and set the outer deadzone to 0% (or something a bit above 0% if you still want at least some aim acceleration for quick turn-arounds)

you have to mess with the setting to get it just right for you. I had a hard time aiming in H5 at first now i aim just fine. I have my sensitivity at 4 and accel at 3. Deadzone i dont think i ever even touched that.
