So Regret just.. Jumped the Gun?

I’m just now playing over the Halo 2 campaign, which the last time I played it was 6-7 years ago. But about Regret- he jumps to Earth with a fleet of only about 15 ships which gets mostly banged up, because he wasn’t expecting that many humans to be on Earth? Then bugs out to Installation-05? This seems a bit odd, first, why wouldn’t he expect that much of a fight, and second, how did he know the location of Delta Halo?

I think Regret went and did something ( Go to earth ) without the concent of the other two prophets in the attempt of self gain.

But the covenant didn’t know that Earth was the actual home planet of the humans and didn’t expect to see them there hence why regret only took a small-ish fleet with him.

Then regret panicked out and jumped to Delta Halo in a desperate hurry, but Chief in the In-amber-clad got through the portal just before it closed.

I think on the mission " regret " when you are using the water elevators, Cortana will intercept a message from regret to truth and read it out to you, that should explain more.

Yeah, he discovered the portal to The Ark. He didn’t know about the significance of Earth though.

Just remember that he didn’t purposely go to Delta Halo. He made a blind jump just to escape, just like Keyes did in Halo CE. He just happened to find Delta Halo in the process, and then sent ships out to settle in and create military outposts so no humans could destroy it like previously.

Though it’s never really been explained I doubt it was a blind jump, that would be a pretty big coincidence. It’s more likely that his ground teams found the location of 05 and then they pulled out.

The Scarab was simply a distraction.

Looking back in canon, Regret’s fleet at Earth would have been immensely larger on the scale of the invasion of Reach. The SPARTAN-II’s led a covert assault using the Gettysburg-Ascendant Justice hybrid on the formations docked at the Unyielding Hierophant during Operation FIRST STRIKE.

The remains of a fleet 500 ships strong is what we saw attack Earth on October 20th, 2552. If it weren’t for them, the invasion would have gone awfully different…

I seriously doubt that, because as soon as In-amber clad goes through the protal and discovers the rings, on the level “delta halo” in the opening cutscene, Chief was dropped onto the ring immediately as they came out of the portal from earth.

The covenant were already heavily fortified and settled in when chief dropped in.

Like one of the guys on here said, It was would be a big coincidence ( and would make the story feel cheap and tacky ) if chief “accidently” randomly jumped through space and found another Halo.

Yeah, that’s basically where I got all of this from, I was just kind of confused as to why he did this, and how he knew the location of Delta Halo. Like you said though, probably for his own gain, he most likely knew something about New Mombasa, like how to find the location of Installation-05 from there, and he got hasty. I don’t think it was a blind jump, either.

However, I thought the Covenant knew Earth was the last stronghold for the humans? As for the small fleet, I suppose this was all he had access to and like someone said, in First Strike, Blue Team destroyed 500 or so of their ships.

So, he knew this was on Earth, and then knew the location of Delta Halo from this?

I expect Regret was quite shocked when his reinforcements failed to arrive… though of course, he was leading the advance fleet, and his “reinforcements” were the main fleet.

I suspect Regret found Installation 05’s coordinates while messing around with the Portal.

I’m still not sure if Regret knew the location of Delta Halo or made a blind jump (highly unlikely…), but I do know that when Regret found out about the portal’s location on Earth, he didn’t tell the other hierarchs. So when he showed up to Earth with his small fleet expecting a tiny human resistance, he was greatly surprised. After jumping to Delta Halo, he sent an apology to the other hierarchs explaining he wasn’t aware that Earth was the human homeworld. Truth then sent the much, much larger fleet that we see arrive near Delta Halo.

Basically, he found out the portal was on a planet that turned out to be Earth. Him knowing the location of Delta Halo through it is speculation on my part.

Here’s how I think it went down…

  • Regret found Delta Halo but kept it a secret from the other Prophets.
  • He found the location of the Portal while on Delta Halo.
  • He went to the Portal, expecting only a shield world I’m guessing after he already saw one in Halo Wars.
  • Got overwhelmed by the humans presence which he didn’t expect at all so he goes into slipspace BACK to Delta Halo.
  • That’s why there was already ground units on Delta Halo when Chief arrived.
  • That’s why the flood is out of containment again, something happened while Regret was gone.
  • Then he calls for help and that’s when High Charity arrives.

Seems like Regret f’d up royally just to either show off with all the stuff he found to the other Prophets or be the one to lead the Covenant through the Great Journey.

The most confusing thing is the amount of Covenant ground forces already on Delta Halo just after Regret and In Amber Clad arrives. That’s never been explained.

Yeah thats what I thought too.

So… Regret never knew earth was the home world for teh humans???

DON’t LET ME SEE YOU ON MY EARF AGAIN! xD

But if you have read Halo the fall of reach you would know that cortana sent them to the installation in CE because of a prior discovery believeing something important was there

Alright, let’s see if I can make sense of this.

[Speculation]

Okay, so sometime between Halo: CE and Halo 2 (or maybe even before then), the Prophet of Regret found Installation 05 (Delta Halo). Regret set up ground forces on the ring. While on Delta Halo, Regret found the location of the Ark. He wanted to be the one that led the Covenant on the Great Journey, so he rushed to the “location” of the Ark with the usual Escort Fleet (he took enough ships to protect him, in case he ran into any Humans or other threats, but not enough ships to conduct a successful planetary invasion). Once Regret exited out of slip-space, he realised this world was heavily defended by the Humans. Regret never knew this was a Human world, let alone the human homeworld. Regret done what he done as seen in Halo 2 and then jumped into slip-space and back to Delta Halo when he realised he couldn’t win the battle he just started. Regret contacted the Prophet of Truth and informed him of what happened, this made Truth angry because truth already knew of the human homeworld and was planning an attack with a MASSIVE fleet (the very same fleet which was almost completely annihilated by John-117 and friends). So Truth sent High Charity and it’s Fleet to Delta Halo to help Regret. Unbeknownst to Regret, Truth was waiting for Master Chief to kill Regret so he would be out of his way.

[End Speculation]

So it’s explained in Halo 2 that the Prophet of Regret did not know this world was the Human homeworld. He did not expect ANY humans to be present. And as soon as John-117 and UNSC forces were approaching his Assault Carrier, he high-tailed it out of there.

Well they must have known about Delta Halo before they got there at least somewhat breifly since there is no way he would do a blind jump. There is no need to do that since unlike humanity they don’t have a Cole Protocol. Its just not necessary for the Covenant I suppose.

In the opening cut-scene of the game the prophets talk about how they found another halo right after the Chief destroyed installation 04.
