So, let's hear your ideas: how would you - the community - make a better Halo game?

I know it’s easy to say “we should have basic colors”, and “customization should be better”, and “Forge should have been at launch” and so on, but let’s actually take a moment to expand that to the majority of the game, from story, to MTX, to multiplayer, and so on. Let’s consider what would have happened if YOU had creative control over how you wanted this to go, on any or all parts.

How would you have done it? I’d like to hear how you all would have designed this game, and your goals, while also keeping Infinite’s current mechanics in place. How would you have made customization, and approached armor cores? How would you have had MTX not so frequent, but also viable? How would you have kept this game as a F2P life service for the next 10 years? What’s your realistic goal for how the game would have launched? Forge, maps, customization, etc.?

This is - by no means - challenging you all in an aggressive manner, as if to say “I bet you couldn’t do better”. I honestly think many of us would have a better ideal vision for this game, as Infinite is being handled terribly. And I’d like to hear your take on “If I had control”.

Please post away, even if you think you’re making a TL;DR. I’ll read over what anyone here posts.

Only thing needs to be done is them be open communication.

Listen to community and be open on routes your taking. It’s going slow we’re not pushing workers past 40 hours work week… if that is main reason plus difficulty slipspace engine in a 40 hour work week then come out with it.

  1. Launch with co-op and splitscreen for campaign, forge, firefight, basic gamemodes, mission replayability, ability to revive teammates in campaign and player progression outside of ranked.
  2. If I made the «Heroes of Reach» battlepass I would have all the reach related armor in the battlepass and not the shop.
  3. The beta or Infinite flight would be the final beta that was going to make the game polished as it should be.
  4. Colors and emblems would have been customizable as in MCC. But with special colors, like gold, silver and other shiny colours. With patterns, and customizable coating. You could create coating with the colors you had. I would make some special colors and patterns accesible through the shop but keep them in the end of a battlepass. As well as coatings for weapons and vehicles.
  5. I would have an own spartan ops story based on your MP spartan, with a story based theme for each season which introduced new or legacy weapons and new equipment items like grav lift, bubbleshield and sentryturret.
  6. pre and post game lobby would be there at launch, as well as a map voting system.
  7. Onyx rank would grant players Helioskrill or achilles armor.
  8. Achievements would grant players different kind of armor.

This is what comes to my mind now, but could be some more.

For Multiplayer, I would have:

  • Had a Battlepass System like the current one, but with more earnable credits replacing the challenge swaps and XP boosts
  • Had multiple items (8+) in the shop daily.
  • You could buy cosmetics from the armoury but they would cost more than if they were in the shop.
  • More ways to earn armour and stuff such as achievements and amounts of certain medals.
  • All the legacy weapons possibly in a legacy sandbox mode.
  • Armour coatings are optional OR you can make your own with certain extents if you are F2P

I’ve posted plenty of them honestly.

One of my biggest passions out of all of the issues Halo Infinite has.

  • I would have basically copied the Customization-Model of another F2P-Game. Played a lot of Rocket League and would probably go for that.
  • Release it with Forge + Custom Game Browser to let the Community do most of the stuff while the actual Team is working on fixes.

Done.

That latter idea would have been genius. People have maps and modes they can work on, along with ways for communities (clans) to work, and that fills the time gap that is needed for further additions.

Even now if 343 had that, I’m pretty sure Infinite would have been in a MUCH better place.

Coop, forge, and fileshare at launch.

Ok lengthy post incoming.

Ok so first off, absolutely nix microtransactions, keep that garbage out of the game entirely and put all the focus into actually designing the game rather than leeching off of gullible players.

Secondly: ALL base content day 1, will delay the game UNTIL this goal is achieved, in fact I wouldn’t even ANNOUNCE the existence of the game until this goal is achieved. Forge and Co-Op day 1 as well as EVERY other Halo staple, yes even color customization like it always has been.

Thirdly I’d take the best bits of EACH Halo title for the multiplayer, From CE and 2 it’d have to be the map environments, for Halo 3 it’d be the map design layouts, for Reach it’d be the Forge map Canvas styles of giant locations on a Halo ring instead of just flats, the graphical portions of the game, the Spartan customization, and the multiplayer armor design style, for Halo 4 it would be the Pilotable Pelican, and loadouts for custom games, for both Reach and 4 it’d be entirely new armor abilites as well as a small handful of old ones, for Halo 5 it’d be the weapon and vehicle sandbox variety, and for ODST it’d be the Firefight mode and Campaign Level layout.

As for the Campaign, whilst using ODSTs design layout, I’d also be using Halo 2’s story telling style where you play half the missions as Chief, and the other half as the Arbiter.

For Matchmaking, whilst abilities WOULD be in matchmaking there would be two separate styles: Old School, and Remember Reach. In “Old School” You get the base maps redesigned in Forge to be better played WITHOUT abilities, meaning every playlist in this mode is classic old school Halo movement and gameplay, meaning no sprint. Remember Reach is the portion WITH abilities enabled for those who like a little chaos in their daily Halo fix.

As for Forge it’d definitely be a fusion between Reach, 4, and H2A as those are the best Forge modes we’ve had. I don’t consider Halo 5 Forge “Forge Mode” more like “PC level editor wannabe mode”. Forge is meant for quick dumb fun, something where you can slap anything together and wind up with a half-decent map in maybe 90 minutes instead of 3 days.

And then there’s the music, whilst I do think Marty’s music is God Tier for Halo, I’d try to see if I could get John Williams to do the score, just to see what kind of music we’d get.

If you insist. 7 steps.

Step 1: Throw Halo Infinite straight in the garbage, and start all over in a fresh new engine that’s easy to work with, update, and bugfix

Step 2: Don’t let 343 or Microsoft even breathe in the general direction of the game, and let some of the greatest fan devs and modders over the years become the new Bungie team that works on the game as a passion project

Step 3: Design vertical scale maps. No idea why the grapple is the focus of the game, but not a single map has any vertical height to it like Halo Reach

Step 4: Add all the weapons from all the games, even the variants from 5 and Halo Online, and give Energy Pistol back its EMP. Heavily rebalance all the weapons, and have Dual Wielding again, where different weapons might have special combinations, like Disruptor and Needler would cause an EMP explosion cloud that electricity travels between the needle shards on the ground and walls. Would also fix the unbalanced issue in Halo 3 by making weapons more accurate when used separately, and less accurate when dual wielding, since you have increased fire rate, making some weapons better solo at long range and dual at close range. More weapons means better ordinance and super fun Fiesta.

Step 5: Redo the campaign, the whole thing, and spread the story across tons of interesting biomes, instead of the hike across low poly Canada we had. Would add a co-op Spartan Ops campaign adding a loot system and XP system to killing enemies for the upgrade system, instead of them just pointlessly standing around doing nothing and guarding nothing. There would always be tons of side missions to do, and daily/weekly/monthly challenges. Your campaign XP would have its own progression system and rank to unlock Multiplayer cosmetics for your custom Spartan in multiplayer and co-op campaign Spartan Ops

Step 6: Design passive challenges that don’t incentivize negative player behavior, like Win 3 matches in any Objective Game Mode, or get 10 headshots, get 25 kills, finish with a positive K/D and at least 5 kills, kill the current holding or last held Oddball carrier (in case they dropped it), get a multi infection, kill the Grifball carrier, etc. Skips could be purchased for free by using a Halo Reach style credits system earning in playing multiplayer and Campaign/Spartan Ops loot.

Step 7: Good fun large BTB maps with vehicles at base

So for starters I wanna say I understand reasons behind armor cores and the need to make profit from the f2p model but I do have some thoughts. While I get armor cores I think the coating channels could be reworked. Instead of a single coating that impacts the entire armor make it so that you can unlock the pattern and then unlock colors with the ability to select which channels that color is applied to. I do agree that coatings and visors should be the two things that are always cross core. I like that 343 tried to react to the desire to gain xp from score and put it in the challenge system but I would like to eventually see a more complete implementation of the score earning system from mcc(This would of course take some time to implement potentially but I feel it would be worth the wait. Another issue is challenges. Currently certain challenges can feel restricting(Although it seems to be less so than at launch) One way to mitigate that would be to make it so players can work on all challenges at once instead of 3 or 4. Challenge swaps could still be used to put a different challenge in the list without a player feeling stuck on one difficult challenge slowing their momentum. Finally I think adding a way to earn credits in game is crucial maybe through certain challenges. This makes players feel like they can earn the items and may even encourage them to buy credits to combine with the ones they earned in game. That’s my main points for now Thanks for reading this block (:

[Events that are fun and encourage you to play the entire duration of the event]

So, first off, events should be unique and add something new to the game, while also being fun to play.

Let’s take Tenrai.
It lasted 6 weeks and is just the same mode over and over again. That got stale after the first 2 weeks.

What it should’ve been was, Fiesta entered the game in the Tenrai event and then is added to the game permanently after the first week.

  • The next week, the event adds a variant to the Fiesta playlist (Fiesta Oddball)

That mode is added to the Fiesta playlist permanently after the week is over.

  • Next week adds Fiesta CTF
  • Next week adds Fiesta Strongholds
  • Next week adds BtB Fiesta, to the BtB playlist.
  • The final week adds Fiesta Attrition (or Attrition Fiesta) to both the Attrition playlist and the Fiesta playlist.

Each week added something new to the game to keep the event and the game itself, fresh.
And, it is a great way to add new content to the game

Also, the events shouldn’t be challenge based, they should simply be like the seasonal BPs, you complete your weekly/daily challenges to get XP, you get a certain amount of XP, you get a level in the BP!

Another way to get players to hop on would be to have an “XP” weekend, where you get x2 the XP from challenges, or you could have a weekend where players earn credits from challenges.

There are lots of ways to make the game fresh and keep players coming back.

Let’s try to make it like that.

  • Nov 15—game launch
  • Nov 23-Nov 30—Fracture: Tenrai (Fiesta playlist added + event BP)
  • Dec 3-Dec 5—Double XP weekend
  • Dec 14-Dec 28—Winter Contingency event (Plasma grenades are snowballs and maps have holiday decorations + event BP)
  • Dec 31-Jan 2—Log in to get a free holiday themed armor piece
  • Jan 4-Jan 11—Fracture: Tenrai (Fiesta Oddball is added to the Fiesta playlist)
  • Jan 14-Jan 16—Get a free 100 credits for logging in during the weekend
  • Jan 18-Feb 1—Cyber Showdown event (Attrition playlist is added + Event BP)
    • Jan 21-23—shop sale
  • Feb 4-Feb 6—Double XP weekend
  • Feb 8-Feb 15—Fracture: Tenrai (Fiesta CTF is added)
  • Feb 22-March 1—Fracture: Tenrai (Fiesta Strongholds is added)
    • Feb 25-Feb 27—log in to get a free Samurai themed armor piece
  • March 8-March 22—Tactical Ops event (Tactical Slayer variants added + event BP)
    • March 11-13—gain 5 credits for every match played
  • March 29-April 5—Fracture Tenrai (Fiesta BtB is added)
  • April 12-April 19—“Eggs” are hidden around the maps, each containing a different prize. When you find an egg, you get the prize (credits/cosmetic item) after the match is over. (Easter event)
  • April 19-April 26—Fracture Tenrai (Fiesta Attrition/Attrition Fiesta is added)
  • April 29- May 1—Double XP weekend
  • May 3—Start of S2

So, there’s the calendar for what “should’ve” been Season 1.

[Customization overhaul]

So, the customization has incredible bones and has the possibility to be better than Reach

So, let’s go through it shall we? Let’s start with armor.

Armor

  • Armor pieces
    • Helmets/helmet attachments
      • These are fine, but attachments shouldn’t be helmet locked unless they physically can’t go on other helmets.
      • You should be able to use multiple attachments at once as long as they don’t clip
      • Helmets should be crosscore. Me, a f2p user would go from having 3 helmets per core (MK. VII and Yorai) to 6 helmets to choose from per core. Would only increase customization and make people more incentivized to buy helmets or the BP since the unlocks are more valuable
    • Shoulders
      • No complaints here other than they should be crosscore
    • Chest pieces
      • People have pointed out that most (if not all) of the chest attachments don’t change color with the rest of the armor, they remain grey slabs of metal on your spartan. This NEEDS to change
    • Gloves
      • No complaints other than crosscore
      • And we should have the ability to choose our L and R gloves, like Shoulders
    • Visors
      • These should be crosscore
    • Knee pads
      • These should be crosscore
      • We should have the ability to choose them L and R like shoulders.
    • Utility
      • Should be crosscore
      • We should be able to choose them L and R like shoulders (exceptions apply (i.e. Yorai utilities) )
    • Wrists
      • We should be able to pick them L and R like shoulders
      • Should be crosscore
  • Color customization
      • We should have the ability to pick primary and secondary colors from a color wheel, for free.
      • Separately, in the store and unlocked through Battlepasses, we can gain different color options for certain armor pieces (i.e. "Blue helmet, yellow helmet, green armor set, orange glove, red chestplate, ect ect)
      • Also, there should be an “armor wear” slider, which affects how dirty/worn your armor looks.
      • Deigns for armor can be sold/unlocked, like (camo, striped, dotted, ect ect)
  • Armor FX
    • I should be able to put multiple armor FX on as long as they don’t interfere with eachother. Flaming shoulders/Mohawk, Flaming helmet/Flaming shoulders, ect ect

Weapons

  • Modules should be separated into “barrel” “stock” and any other part that has modules
  • color customization should be like armor, you have primary and secondary colors free and then can buy/unlock different parts.
This would open up a HUGE avenue for MTX and further player customization. Think of all the different parts that you could customize the color

trigger
stock
barrel
grip
butt
butt plate
heel
trigger gaurd
magazine
cocking piece
receiver
rear sight
carrying handle
bolt
breach
barrel extension
handguard
handguard liner
handguard cap
front sight housing
muzzle
flash suppressor
barrel nut
slip ring

Vehicles

  • modules can be expanded
    wheels
    windshield
    grille
    bumper
    roof
  • color customization can be expanded.
I don’t know much about cars, so I can’t list all the different parts but the potential is there

Emblems

  • We should get emblem backdrops and emblem fronts. This increases customization

That’s about all I have, what do you guys think? Would you prefer this system, or the one we already have?

[Stances animations and intro stances]

So, I saw the idea of stances having animations along with each stance, which I thought was pretty cool. It makes the stances more valuable and cooler. But we could take this to the next level by having the intros have stances too. You could pick what stance you want at the intro and what stance you want at the end, could be the same one or could be 2 different ones. Would be a pretty cool feature that simply increases the value of stances, and would actually make people value then more in the store

[(Updated) Linear content progression]

To start off, you start with nothing unlocked aside from the MK. VII with the default armor (except emblems/backdrops/the base AIs). You must play the progress down one of the core lines to unlock anything. Coatings can only be applied to that core when unlocked, but every coating applies to every core. There would be way more coatings for battlepass than It will appear down below, so keep that in mind as well.

Emblems/backdrops/ai/ai colors can be bought from the store aside from the default free items.

When you unlock an item, it tells you what cores it can be attached to.

Each level costs 200 credits to unlock, ranks can be unlocked for 1700 cr at a discount

Each level costs 2500 XP to unlock. You must complete all 10 levels in a rank to gain access to the next rank in the Battlepass. This means it is virtually impossible to unlock everything without grinding your life away, while also making players feel rewarded for the time they have spent on the game. There is also the avenue of buying levels to skip the grind if you wish.

You can swap between seasons for each core to progress down that season for that core
(i.e. in the battlepass screen, you would have the battlepasses for each core, then, inside those sections, you have the option of what season for that core to progress down. This is to prevent people from not being able to access the new season since they are stuck behind the past season’s cosmetics

Each core’s battlepass has the core itself as the first level, this unlocks all the default armor/coatings for other cores. You must unlock the other cores to actually use them however.

Now, let’s get to the battlepass, shall we?
(I will be ignoring everything aside from armor and vehicles/weapons coatings and weapon modules so the actual battlepass will be longer and take longer to grind

Give Halo to another company, not 343.

They don’t even need to redesign the game. They have a working halo game here in Infinite that, while not perfect, is the first high quality Halo game since 3.

However, it needs:

  • a complete overhaul of its abysmal netcode
  • a complete overhaul of its abysmal skill based matchmaking implementation that bases everything off a global hidden MMR
  • a complete overhaul of its abysmal progression systems, including a career progression mode and lifetime stat tracking; the current challenge system needs to be thrown out entirely
  • a complete overhaul of its abysmal customization system to not divide everything up per each armor core
  • a complete overhaul of its abysmal UI
  • a complete overhaul of its borderline non-existent social features (game lobbies, fix custom games, add file share, fix theater, etc)
  • content - maps/modes/forge/co-op/etc… It should at least get to feature parity with Reach
  • a social match composer
  • improvements to performance and stability, particularly on pc
  • responses to near unanimous community feedback on minor issues (balance, player collision, spawns, etc)

All they need to do is get their incompetent management out of the way and let the devs actually respond to and implement these types of feedback.

This is a complicated topic, because there are many elements.

Here are just a few tweaks that make a world’s difference:
— Make weapon switching faster to encourage weapon combos
— Increase clip sizes of some weapons or increase reload speed on some weapons
— Don’t design maps around Clamber or even remove Clamber
— Remove sprint and maybe slightly increase movement speed
— Design maps to feel smaller and make BTB maps more versatile for 4v4 modes
— Ensure player collision is working as intended
— Increase player impulse from explosions
— Slightly increase player pushback from Melee
— Decrease Melee lunge
— Improve Melee capabilities against Sword users so double Melee is possible
— Changes to Needler to be more explosive and also not as effective
— Faster Plasma Pistol charge and slightly better tracking
— Make Vehicles less destructible, higher impulse from grenades, less bullet tracking
— Make Vehicle drivers/passengers have no extra defense from being shot
— Decrease recoil and bloom on all weapons
— Decrease delay between shots on some weapons like Sniper Rifle
— Replace Sidekick with something like M6G or M6D
— Improve zoom with all weapons. Maybe add a reticule-less scope like in H3
— Tons of changes to Playlist game modes (ie BR starts)
Other tweaks I didn’t think of

Now, that I think about it, it’s not just a few…

Abandon the cookie-cutter microtransaction monetization.

One of the things 343 had going for them was the idea of a player friendly battlepass that never expired.

If they could find a way to make their model more player friendly, players wouldn’t feel like they’re getting screwed.

Finding a way being the operative phrase. They have like tons of feedback on what’s wrong with their store.

I mean fundamentally I think that the approach to making the game needs to be different. It seems to me like they are starting with deliverables, like multiplayer with lots of mtx, or an “open world” campaign, or “the next ten years of halo,” and instead start with creating a work of art.

I know, it’s crazy, it’s not perfectly in line with the goals of capitalism, but damn it would be the best way to make money from a franchise in the long run while continuing to produce decent content.

Make a game because you have a good game to make, and you love Halo, not because it’s profitable.

As to how I would do that, personally? tbh I would start with trimming the fat by redacting all Halo media since before Halo 4 and then picking and choosing the good ideas from the lot. I would make a Halo game set in the 2540s, with RPG elements where you play as an ONI operative, progressing and traveling in your own corvette or prowler, upgrading your skills, and eventually getting augmented like a spartan and getting your own Mjolnir.

I’d also make a semi-open world game, a la Infinite, that deals with the post war from someone’s perspective other than Chief. Leave him floating for a while, and when you bring him back, bring him back as an NPC.
