So, Infinite marks farewell to the Waypoint forums

Ngl, I’m gonna miss this place. It might not be the most positive beacon of light in the community, but I really have enjoyed the debates we’ve had here. Hoping the current moderation team transitions to the Discourse forums!

Yeah, reading that really bummed me out. I just got back into the forums, so that’s really disappointing. I don’t know what Discourse is, but I hope it has the same feel as this place does. Even if this place could be negative at times, it was a nice little place where people could just talk Halo, and for that I’ll always appreciate it.

Reading more about Discourse it seems to be more about forum hosting rather than a new website, and even Gearbox uses them to host their forums at gearboxsoftware.com.

So maybe Halo Waypoint’s forums will continue to go on in some fashion? I hope we can get more details/confirmation what is to come of this place.

I am just thankful they are not abandoning their own forums altogether and just saying, “Use reddit” haha. That would be terrible for discussion.

I am concerned regarding the archiving of past posts though.

I would also like to know if the Forum Rank system will continue on. Not for bragging rights" as that is silly, but I feel like a user’s rank helps to show their level of experience interacting with the community when compared to new/surprising ideas they may post. It helps lend credence that some posts are more well thought out than others.

Oh lord, I would honestly have just quit the community if they told us Reddit was going to be the new official discussion place lol.

I hope this is the case. Part of the charm of waypoint is that I can seamlessly jump between forums, news, and game stats. If that is no longer the case, I don’t see myself using the forums very often

I’ve seen it before unfortunately, but thankfully that is not the case for us.

From another thread, I’ve received two responses that indicate Waypoint forums will continue on, though it has a different set of tools behind it.

Question is this update going to make it look more like gearsofwar.com? Just checked out gearbox and the forums looked similar to the gears forums. If so I don’t see the change being that big a deal overall but I will miss the stats and stuff.

Hey look that’s me!

I’ll explain here what I said in that other thread. The Waypoint forums are sticking around!
Not all that different from Infinite changing to the Slipspace Engine, Waypoint is just swapping its base forum system to a newer better one. It does consequently mean most parts of the current forum will be wiped, but replaced with a way cleaner and regularly updated new system.
All of this added natively into Waypoint.

To get an idea of what this will look like, you can check out the Gearbox Software Forums which also uses Discourse. It means big, easy to read forum sections, dynamic post counts, custom avatars, and a quotes system which doesn’t block half the page. Once again this all functions inside the Gearbox website, using a Gearbox account.

For custom avatars, it looked to me like in the example images on vNext Waypiont the profile used our Gamerpic as the avatar used on the site, which of course can be customized further.

Also on the subject of the forum being wiped, would you have any insight how one might go about archiving/saving forum posts? I know about Archive.org but was hoping to come up with a different method.

Looks like 343 might be in control of how custom avatars work.

Archive.org is really the best place to save it. Otherwise you can take screenshots or just save the webpage on a computer using CTRL+S in any browser, but they might stop working after a while that way.

Yeah I was a little bummed to read that as well. Hopefully they diver deeper into what that’ll mean soon.

Damn… and I just started using them to :frowning:

So does this mean that current Waypoint Forum ranks etc will carry over or will they be wiped and replaced with a new one? I must say I was hoping that the Forums was just getting a facelift of sorts and not completely wiped and re done.

That being said though I’ve never really been overly good at just “starting again” even with a spring clean haha.

Its exciting and scary at the same time as I like all I’ve earned and done in these Forums. To see it just disappear is just a bit jarring.

Think I’ll check out this other Forum platform before I work myself up even more over something I don’t fully understand yet!

I’m looking forward to see the changes.

I tried to be an active user in the past and these forums just never stuck with me, I’m only recently dipping my toes in here again due to Halo: Infinite hype; If they can find a way to reward activity/loyalty with their new system, I think I would be more inclined to be active here as opposed to… say… Reddit, where I know nothing changes whether I post a lot in a week, or lurk for a week.

I don’t really mind the forum service being switched over, but man I’m really gonna be bummed out if the ranks and badges don’t carry over. That said, new Waypoint in general looks really slick so it may be a sacrifice worth making.

The Waypoint forums aren’t going anywhere. We aren’t going anywhere. Discourse is a forum software platform, i.e., it’s a thing that allows websites to easily implement their own forums.

This isn’t a new thing for Waypoint. Waypoint has changed platforms in the past. Way back in the day the Waypoint forums used to run on YAF.NET. Then for the current version 343i went with their own solution, and now again they’re returning to a platform they don’t need to maintain themselves.

From a user point of view, it shouldn’t be a massive change. There will be visual and functional changes, but the same community will still be there, all the old threads should still be there. It will still be the Waypoint forums, just different under the hood.

Ill take a gander at the new forum when it comes out and hopefully its good

Hearing that all the old threads will be there is a huge relief. And you’re right, I would not have thought about it but it make sense that 343i have updated the backend of the forums in the past, however as far as I’m aware with those updates we did not lose any of our prior posts, which is good.

This is great to hear and I do appreciate it, but there is just one thing that concerns me…

Uny’s post from December 2019 states:

> As we prepare for the launch of Halo Infinite in 2020, we’ve decided to give this site a fresh coat of paint. Our current plan for Waypoint is to make sure this overhaul, which will actually be much more than a fresh coat of paint, truly improves every aspect of the current site. We did want to provide a heads up that there may be features of the existing site that don’t transition over to the new one. That means if there are any forum posts, stats pages, or Community Updates () that you wouldn’t want to get lost to the ether, we’d encourage you to start thinking about saving them for your own records just in case.

The fact that it is called out that if there are any forum posts, stats pages, or Community Updates we don’t want to get lost in the update we should save them for our own records now.

I am happy to do so but I am not sure what is the best solution. This post does make me think there’s a chance we could lose our old forum posts, despite not losing them in past updates.

This of course could have been very early days in the update process, and now that 343i have decided on Discourse the warning may no longer be applicable.

That’s definitely ominous. But given the “just in case”, how I interpret it is that some stuff might get lost in the transition. Old posts since 2010 have survived the last three forum updates, and given forum posts are just plain text, not transferring them would be a very strange choice.

That’s a good point, I completely glossed over the “just in case” piece.

I think I’ll just have a little project going on the side where I save the source code of some of my favorite posts as to not lose the hyperlinks, but I am feeling more assured. I did ask Unyshek on Twitter for clarification so we may get some confirmation there too.
