After finally getting some money. Remember back in Halo 3, you could hold LT and then move the left stick. This would move the object you’re holding ether further or closer to you. However now in Reach if you do that it moves YOU further or closer to the object. What is this? This completely ruins Forge. You can’t make anything. Can someone explain this?
As with any game, you will have to adapt. And in all honesty, that isn’t a big deal. Once you play around with it you’ll get used to it. Reach’s forge is a lot better. If there’s one thing Bungie did right with Reach, it’s forge.

Ok then, how are you supposed to move the object then?

In Reach? With your controller. IRL? With your hands.
No seriously though, you just don’t move it by holding the left trigger and moving the thumbstick. The only difference now is that you move with the object rather than moving the object when you’re stationary. I know the feel of forge is different, but you get used to it. Forge in Halo Reach allows much more customization than Halo 3’s forge. I can’t stress that enough.
I understand that the customization is grand and fantastic. It is meaningless to me if I can’t use it. Moving with the object does not work. If you were stationary and moving it you could pull yourself back and get a view of things. Now in Reach you’re cramped into looking at what small area you can see. What if you’re trying to get your object into a tight space? In Halo 3 you can just zoom out a bit and wiggle it into place. Now you can even see what you’re doing because 3/4 of your screen is blocked up by the damn object because you’re stuck moving with it.
I know first hand that diving straight into the new forge can be a little intimidating, the first time I went in there was so much space and so many objects, and the controls were tough to get used to after forging so much in halo 3, but you just gotta stick with it. Here’s some of the basics you need to know for Reach’s forge:
You move the object in space back and forth, and left and right (the z and x plane) with the left stick. You move it up and down (the y plane) with the left and right bumper. It’s similar to flying the monitor. In order to rotate the object, you hold R and use the right stick to rotate it. Also, holding R and pushing the left stick left and right does a different type of rotation. I’m pretty sure forge is the same regardless of your controller settings.
Also, there are a few new features that are really nice. Once you get into the general area you want the object to be in, hitting the B button and choosing “Edit Coordinates” allows you to barely nudge the object in the direction you want it, which helps to get everything lined up perfect. To get it even more precise, if you hold the Left Stick in while moving the object with the above method, it moves it even slower. This can be about twice as precise than editing the coordinates, and with practice it can allow you to get certain objects lined up that editing coordinates can’t (like the coliseum wall. Also in the B button is “Rotation Snap”, which makes you only rotate the object by a certain amount of degrees each time (It’s a little difficult to explain, so just test it out and then you’ll be like “Oh, that’s what he meant” lol).
The change to moving you around the object instead of the object around you is to allow you to look at it from all angles to see if you are getting it just right.
