So I finally played though the Halo 5 Campaign...

Hello Spartans,
So, I had been putting off playing the Halo 5 campaign for a while, even though I had the game I never touched the Campaign, because of all the horror stories I had heard online, people saying “It’s awful” “One of the worst stories ever” ect, ect, ect. However after being sufficiently bored last night I decided to give the campaign a go. And, as strange as it may sound… I didn’t hate it. Whilst the story was poorly handled to some extent and I can defiantly see why so many Halo fans are mad at 343, I honestly didn’t find the Campaign all too bad. The game play for starters was very well refined, with there being a good amount of areas where the newer features such as the Spartan Charge were give use, such as breaking down a wall to access a vantage point. And the new revive system makes the game a lot less frustrating than past Halo games, not to say they weren’t bad, but there were times where I would die in what could be called a cheap manner.

Whilst some may see the revive mechanic as making the game too easy, I still died plenty of times on Normal difficulty, most deaths came from me acting too cocky and running right into a Knight with a Scattergun or getting me and my team all killed by running in too far. A lot of people seem to also have a problem with the characters (Seriously I saw two forum posts calling for Lock’s death.) but I really didn’t find them terrible, in fact, they sort of grew on me as the game went on, one example of this being when Tanaka said “We come a long way together. A long way yet to go. Let’s make a good jump, like we mean to and handle fools like we need to. And may Buck buy the first round when we get back.” kinda put a small smile on my face. All the voice actors and actresses did a great job (Fun Fact: Vale’s voice actress is the same actress who did Kira Carsen from Star Wars: The Old Republic.). And while a lot of people seemed to hate Cortana’s turn in the game, I found it kinda interesting and I hope this gets expanded on in Halo 6. The overall story kinda reminded me of Star Wars Episode 3, which probably explains why so many people hated it and why I was okay with it.

Just before I wrap this up, I’d just like to make it clear I’m not trying to change anyone’s opinion, just throwing my own opinion out there to put a bit of optimism in all the pessimism. So to conclude, I came into the Halo 5 Campaign ready to hate it but ended up finding it okay, and while it would’ve been cool to see what 343 originally had planned this is not the worst substitute in the world, at least they didn’t do a complete Ultima 9: Ascension and completely destroy the core fundamentals of Halo. So if anyone from 343 happens to read this, you didn’t completely -Yoink!- it up.

I 100% respect your opinion, and at least you are being fair-minded and logical about it as opposed to either a) blindly bashing or b) blindly praising it.

I haven’t played Halo 5’s campaign yet, either, even though I now own it thanks to the Xbox One Slim bundle I bought recently, but unfortunately I already know that I dislike the story due to having read reviews, synopses, and even watched a 2 hour + video that had all Legendary cutscenes and relevant gameplay included. The question for me is going to be whether I actually enjoy playing the campaign or not, story flaws aside. Mostly I’m looking forward to running around and exploring the Sanghelios levels.

So even though I have my own educated reservations about the story, I am glad to hear that you enjoyed playing the game as a whole. Let’s hope that 343i learns from the mistakes of H5 and make H6 better.

Glad to hear the feedback! Really happy to see you liked my post and while I understand why you wouldn’t like the story, the game-play is really solid and is worth playing just for that, even if the multiple fights with the Warden Eternal get a bit repetitive.

Don’t forget his MONOLOGUES! D: Even the shortened clips of gameplay in the video I watched had him yacking my ear off endlessly, lol. XD Can’t we mute him, please?

There is the option to turn the voice audio off, but then nobody would be talking, so I’m not sure. XD

I agree for the most part. I didn’t hate Halo 5’s campaign, in fact I thought it was overall on par with the Reach campaign (I think Reach’s characters were better though, if not stereotypical). I didn’t like how they brought back Cortana and how the entire campaign was misadvertised, but I didn’t think it was in and of itself awful (the campaign, that is).

I thought the squad AI was extremely poor. I also didn’t like that they brought more Wardens in just to make the warden fights a little more difficult.

It’s definitely my least favorite Halo campaign, but it has some good parts.

-It was cool to see Blue Team in-game finally, though they should have been given more of an introduction for fans who didn’t read the books, and it’s a shame they didn’t really matter in the story.

-Seeing Buck again was great, but he was unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Also, nothing about his relationship with Veronica or the fate of his ODST squad was mentioned. That could’ve given him some more character.

-The Sanghelios missions were awesome and it was nice to see the Arbiter again. However, like Blue Team, the civil war between the Covenant and the Swords should’ve have been given more of an introduction to those who don’t read the EU.

-Exuberant Witness is a fun character and I hope she takes the role of comedy relief in future games, similar to Sgt. Johnson

-Locke has the potential to be an interesting character.

-The Created arc has potential if Kevin Grace stays after Halo Wars 2.

-I like the Warden Eternal’s voice.

when your on sanghelios, mission 9 allies, take your time and look around. There is some great stuff there.

This is actually quite different from how I do things, myself. I like to avoid reading about games before I play them so nothing is spoiled and negative reviews don’t influence my own enjoyment of it. It’s nice to see that didn’t happen with you, anyway. This also applies to movies and stuff.

But like I said, that’s just me. This is kind of a rambling post but I guess my whole point is, it works for me and you may want to try it when Halo 6 comes out (not that there’s anything wrong with doing it differently). I also like to play campaign at least once to get familiar with the mechanics, before jumping into multiplayer.

The fate of bucks squad and how he become a Spartan is explained in the book : Halo New Blood. If you want to find out what happened then read this. Spoilers ahead…

Buck and alpha nine (The Rookie, Mickey, Romeo and Dutch) are sent on a mission to Draco III (Bucks homeworld which was partially glassed by the Covenant during the human covenant war) to crush a local insurrection (now called the United Rebel Front). When they are surrounded the Rookie is sent to flank the rebels but is captured and held at gunpoint by the rebels leader. Mickey and Dutch sneak up behind when buck tries to stall. When Mickey and Dutch are in position Mickey hesitates to kill the rebel leader who pulls the trigger on then Rookie. at the rookies funeral Dutch decides to retire. After the funeral Buck is contacted by Jun (from reach) and he and the rest of alpha nine become Spartans. A few years later Mickey, Romeo and Buck are sent to a planet called Tulitsa to rescue the engineer from halo 3 odst and its handler form rebels. On their way to the base Mickey betrays Buxk and Romeo to the rebels revealing that he has been contacting rebel members for quite some time. Romeo distracts the rebels while buck uses Mickeys past (his parent were part of the insurrection) to cause a fight in which Buck eventually overpowers Mickey. Mickey is arrested and Buck request to join another Spartan fireteam which sets up the events of halo 5.

the campaign mission structure was decent, i enjoyed the sanghelios missions although i do wish we spent less time on meridian, argent moon was good to although i would of liked more context. i dislike the story however as it starts by killing of my favourite character all casual like no big deal, then it leads on to a cliched mess of i dont know what, i just dont like to think about

Laura Baley is probably one of the few reasons why I don’t hate Vale as a character, compared to Tanaka and Locke, even though she is just as badly written as the rest. I fell in love with the voice actess in Skyrim’s Dawnguard and then once more in Fallout New Vegas. Looking forward to playing Uncharted 4.

Fun Fact: Locke’s voice actor is the same actor who did Javik in Mass Effect 3. Since Mass Effect 3 and Javik were both super awesome, that makes Locke just a bit better.

I don’t think people say bad of Halo5’s campaign because it has bad gameplay so much but rather you’re left feeling detached from the experience in a way other Halo games don’t. I’m not the biggest fan of Halo2’s campaign for example because some of it is just plain rotten, but the story and characters within that are believable and compelling. Halo6 just doesn’t feature any of this making it feel fairly pointless. If you can get past Halo5’s obvious problems then you’re still left with some excellent combat. A Halo campaign needs to be more however if it’s to be accepted

I think the main reason there was so much backlash and hatred towards Halo 5’s campaign was from the fact that Hunt the Truth and other components of the ad campaign hyped people up and had their expectations really high, and then the actual campaign proceeded to be incredibly disappointing in comparison.

I liked playing through lots of it, but some parts were just… I don’t even know how to put the way I felt into words…

I actually completed campaign first thing, don’t get me wrong i love me some multiplayer, but i really wanted to see what happens. Honestly, i will admit it’s not the best story of the series, but within saying that, looking past it’s flaws, it’s a fairly decent story. I liked it, i really did. Yes the fights with Warden were super repetitive, but meh, besides that i thought it was a really fun campaign!

The thing about the Warden fights… it was his character to be able to repeat himself into many copies… BUT given the track record of content in this game, it’s almost like 343 was like, “Hmmm, how can we make the game more difficult and use the same game assets as much (or as efficiently) as possible? What if we just made up a character that could clone himself?!”

The round-table at 343 then nods, “Ohhh yes yes, very good! Gold stars all around!” When in reality, you play against him in the game and it feels lazy, dull, and at times frustrating all the same. It’s just poor implementation and design from a creativity standpoint.

Personally I wish they’d rid the series of “big time villain” boss type characters and just focus on making the game feel like a future, sci-fi war… much like Halo CE. It didn’t need bosses and it kept things feeling grounded and believable.

I like the campaign too! At first I thought it sucked balls but then I realised I was playing on normal, and on heroic it’s actually pretty fun, and Legendary might be hard. I’m gonna play thru again after this one. The cutscenes are great, the only problem is the sounds. Like when they are falling out of the spaceship into the atmosphere, we should be hearing the wind and the atmosphere burning off, but it is just music. I hate the team thing, I don’t want a team, I hate team FPS games like Gears of War, I hate the revive thing, and I want to kill my team and play thru alone, but if we can do that in Halo 6 I will be happy. The autoaim is incredibly strong which makes the game too easy, it could be weaker. I know it’s there for casuals, kids and girls, but the fun of an FPS is your shooting skill. I don’t mind a bit of help so that I don’t feel like I’m just really crap all the time.

(wtf is up with the swear filter.)

Its actually good that you played it with very low expectations. I’m sure that actually helped you enjoy it more. I enjoyed it. Could it have been better? yeah. But I really enjoyed it. I thought the missions were good, the landscapes were beautiful both in the country and the city type environments as well. I think some people just go in with unrealistic expectations. I think it opens a lot of possibilities for H6. But they really need to deliver for H6. I’m on my second play thru just for the visuals.
