So how are Spartan 4's possibly as fast as 2's?

4 things to clarify.

  1. The original spartans were actually the Orion project super soldiers retroactively dubbed spartan 1’s. These individuals were much like the 4’s selected because they showed a notable level of skill and personality traits compare to others in their field of expertise or military division.

  2. While spartan 2’s have had years of military training and experience with much more rigorous augmentations compared to the 4’s, it should be noted that the 4’s aren’t exactly combat novices either. All members of the spartan 4 program were carefully selected from the best of the best of the UNSC armed forces be it army, marines, air force, navy, oni and their respective special forces divisions. The majority of those soldiers are active combat veterans with distinguished records and several years of experience under their belts; needless to say they are not average run of the mill military grunts in power armor.

  3. Mjolnir Generation 2 was specifically tailored for use by spartan IV super soldiers much like Mjolnir Gen 1 was tailored for the needs of spartan II’s and SPI for spartan III’s. Each spartan IV receive augmentation sets tailored for their genetic profiles and their Mjolnir Generation 2 armor is constructed to complement their individual augmentation profile. In particular I think the biggest reason why Mjolnir can amplify the strength of a spartan IV to greater heights than a spartan II comes down to one key augmentation- A specialized muscular coating which enables their musculature to work significantly harder without destroying their enhanced skeletal structure.

  4. While it is true that spartan 2’s are superior compared to 3’s and 4’s (Whose strength have been noted by Buck to be within the range of the spartan 3’s strength capabilities), All three classes are still weaker than most of the species in the halo universe. Beings such as Hunters, Brutes, and Drones can all but overpower a spartan in a contest of strength even in Mjolnir. But even some elite warriors ranging from Majors to Zealots are more than capable of fighting and besting spartans in combat. Hell Thel Lodamee single handily bested and killed Spartan 2 Sheila-065, he also bested John-117 the master chief and would have killed him were it not for the intervention of supreme commander Luro Taralumee- goes to show that no matter how experience and well trained a soldier is they can be bested and killed by those more naturally skilled.

  1. Yup! totally aware. I think they were mentioned first in Fall of Reach so sure they are more original than the SIIs, you’re right about that. I was going to say that since they aren’t really in the games S-IIs are the OGs of the games, but technically Johnson appears in Halo CE before Chief.

  2. True, they have active military experience. But would that compare to Spartan-IIs? By the time S-IIs were 14 they had more military experience than a 26 year old spec ops veteran would if they had signed up at age 18. I mean look at Buck, arguably the most experience S-IV we know of. He enlisted in 2528, when Chief had been a Spartan for 11 years, and had been fighting the covenant for 3 after several years of combat against insurrectionists. Most S-IVs aren’t as experience as Buck too, take Locke. He joined sometime after 2535, so by 2558 he could have 23 years of military experience to Chief’s 41 years. Not to mention that in a single month of the war, an S-II probably saw more action than many marines saw in a year.

  3. The quality of different generations of Mjolnir is irrelevant to comparisons of Spartan generations, simply because S-IIs can wear Gen 3. Even if an S-IV in Gen 2 is more powerful than an S-II in Gen 1 (which is debatable,) then if both are wearing Gen3, the S-II would be a clear victor, no? Not to mention this bit re: Gen2 " some in the branch were dissatisfied with its minimal performance improvement over the old GEN1 systems"

  4. I’m curious about your claim that drones can overpower a Spartan in a contest of strength? But you’re right, Hunters are definitely stronger and I remember when Brutes first appeared in First Strike and totally bested Blue Team. Sadly over time as they became a main enemy I think that the portrayal of Brute’s strength really dwindled. Except obviously as they show in HW2, Atriox is much stronger than S-IIs in Gen1, and I suppose Infinite now shows that he’s stronger than a S-II in Gen3. I’m curious how a big S-II like Jorge would fair in a Gen-3 - armored arm wrestling match against a standard brute.

I haven’t read much of the comics and I don’t remember a lot about the details of the Spartan IVs in general, but I think I remember from Halo: The Fall of Reach that when Chief gets Mjolnir armor for the first time it kind of connects to the users brain and reads what the nervous system wants to do before the user can even think “I want to move my arm”. I think Chief tries to move his arm or something and the Mjolnir almost moves with his arm at the exact same time because it reads the signals from his brain to his muscles.

I believe that’s also why they said only spartans can use Mjolnir armor, since it reads the user’s “thoughts” so quickly a normal user’s limbs get broken because the armor is already moving them quickly before the user even realizes they wanted to move.

This also can be seen in some of the other novels with Chief’s POV (I forgot some exact examples) where the narrator would say something like “Chief wondered to himself how much time there was until they got to the drop zone” or something, and then the Mjolnir system automatically puts up a countdown timer. Again, Chief didn’t need to say “Give me a timer” because the suit was connected to him and could read his “thoughts”.

edit: Just saw some other people explained this already. Whoops
