So Halo 5's forge mode is always-online?

I’ve read some stuff people have said on the forums saying it requires an internet connection to play, but they never gave an official source to what led them to that conclusion. My question is plain a simple: Does forge mode require an internet connection to play? I only ask this because I don’t exactly have the best connection all the time where I live, and I would like to enjoy forge with the rest of the community.

I don’t for sure know, but I heard internet connection is required to forge, which would really really really really REALLY suck.

No one knows yet, but i wouldn’t be surprised if it is always online.

Maybe Forge could be using a little bit of the cloud? Also the maps might be saved online only.

exactly, guys and gals you need to understand and embrace the power of the cloud. By being offline we would be greatly restrcting what we could forge. I understand always online is a pain because there are those of us with bad internet or maybe we don’t want to have to worry if we lose internet for a little bit because of whatever. I understand that and am not saying those are invalid complaints, but if you want to get the best we can get it’s going to have to use the cloud, and that’s online only.

When they talk about Forge “as an ongoing (free) service,” it sounds like it requires an Internet connection.

That doesn’t sound like it requires online… It sounds like they plan to continue to update forge with new items and features after launch…

of course, you’d have to be online to download any updates, but I don’t see why you’d have to be online to play the mode by yourself.

Why do you think it’s that bad?

A while back, I remember someone asking Josh Holmes a question about the use of dedicated servers. The question’s wording left some room for interpretation, so so did Holmes’ answer. My memory’s a bit hazy; sorry about the lack of detail on this.

IIRC from that situation, we know for a fact that Custom Games (and Forge?) will use dedicated servers when you play them online with other people. We do not know if they will require an online connection to a dedicated server when you use them by yourself. (Seems like it’d be a bit of a waste.)

Especially since when I go on holiday with friends we don’t have internet so we usually make forge maps and play splitscreen. So if it is indeed online they really have punched us in the face in terms of this game. Still can’t wait to play it though just wish they were more consumer friendly.

Obviously I’m guessing, but I find his word choice to be interesting.

He calls Forge a “service” rather than ‘mode’ or ‘feature,’ which suggests more of an Internet-dependent software as a service (SaaS) situation that’s in keeping with Microsoft’s current philosophy.

There was a question asking about if multiplayer experiences in halo 5 required an active connection. Josh’s answer was yes because every aspect of multiplayer uses dedicated servers. This does not confirm that us always online because forge is something that can be played alone or with people.

.

if forge requires internet then I think im done. I always praised Halo bc I can count on it being worth the money. Split screen local multiplayer and campaign, forge, and just not always needing an internet connection. So if forge requires internet im not buying and have lost all faith in games. 343 remembers this is for consoles right? not a PC. They have lost touch in what makes a counsel great.

Even in keeping with MS’ philosophy I don’t think ‘service’ inherently implies online requirement… It just sounds like they are going to dedicate a team to constantly listening to feedback and improving forge…

I could be wrong, but I just don’t see how his wording implies anything really

They haven’t confirmed one way or the other, but I would say it is. The post calls forge a ‘free service’ not a ‘free expansion’ or a ‘mode’ or ‘feature’

It almost sounds like it might be a standalone application entirely, although it’d be kind of weird to do so.

No matter what, I’m excited for it! I’d rather it not be online only, but even if it is, these scripts and grouping features are going to be amazing. I’m really hoping to be able to make a Breakout level that restructures itself like ‘Danger Room’ style simulation.

Is having NO internet still a thing in 2015-almost 2016? I feel like even if your internet is dog slow, you still have internet…therefore can be “always-online”.

It is very much still a thing. Where I live I can only get internet through Verizon’s 4g hotspot. Now imagine how much data I would use trying to have my xbox “always-online:” With all the updates, patch’s, and hell just downloading forge because it doesn’t come on the disc. I would go broke. So yes it is still a thing. Im only on now because im at work. I wish things would go back to “buy a game, go home, put it in, and play with friends on the same tv.” Consoles will never be able to compete with what the PC’s do so why try with all this 60 frames 1080 p stuff and just go back to why consoles existed in the first place.

It requires an internet connection, I remember him saying that Campaign, Custom Games and Forge all require internet.
You get a free 14 days, and honestly if you’re on Halo, you should have an internet connection anyway.
It’s how the game is advancing. Don’t complain, it’s not that expensive, you can find an entire year of Xbox Live for 30~ online if you look hard enough.

Well by that it might be that they would add content to it and that you don’t have to pay anything extra to have it.

I would assume that it is something you will have to download first and if you want to play your maps online with people, you will have to update the maps to allow other new features and items to be added to it.
