Okay, So I see a lot of threads talking about what they want from Halo 5. But honestly, There is only one thing I truly want;
A FoV Slider! (FoV = Field of View)
For decades now, Halo has had a relatively low FoV (I believe its about 50). A low FoV makes the game look cramped and narrow. It bugs the Hell out of me. Giving players the ability to change their own FoV would not only make the game look less cramped and thin, But would also benefit players like myself.
Having larger FoV’s in reality, It makes it difficult for some players to look into a game which limits their View. It even makes some players feel sick from just playing.
Game’s like Quake, TF2, Bioshock and pretty much every PC game ever, have a FoV Slider.
So… Why not Halo?
This is Next Gen technology people. We shouldn’t be restricted by Consoles, Especially near the beginning.
I know 343 have a lot to work on. I know they have priorities. But with a new Engine in the works, One can only hope that they implement such a feature.
Nope, it will just ruin the game experience for some players. Just play in HCE with someone with a high FOV and you will notice that in medium and short range combat, he has the advantage of shooting first.
You can’t have a slider. It gives people unfair advantages.
It is one of the reasons I don’t game fps competitively on PC. They’re all different. Someone with a high end rig running 120fps on ultra will be able to see you a hell of a lot more easily than you’ll see them running 30 fps on medium.
Everyone needs to have the same variables on consoles. Oh wait equal hardware being more enjoyable? How about equal starts now too!?
See how I did that? Pretty crafty if I do say so myself…

to be honest I wasn’t even trying to do that at first. I saw equal hardware and went “oh s***.” and I went for it.
I believe it should most definitely be implemented. Many people’s TVs can do this already, except only to reduce their FOV which puts them at a disadvantage. Creating a slider does not cause a disadvantage, because everyone has the option of using it. It would be like the difference between Bumper Jumper and the Default control scheme. One lets you use AAs and aim, the other lets you jump and aim.
While I do realize that Spartans wear helmets, many helmets including the EVA do not infringe on FOV. Halo needs to evolve and while some may disagree on what it should go after, i.e. sprint, I believe that like sprint, FOV sliders should be a part of the game. I realize this is an unpopular opinion, but look at the level Cortana in Halo 3. I loved when the Gravemind talked to you because it changed your FOV. Lastly playing Splitscreen with friends would change it for better or for worse as well; a problem that could be rectified with FOV sliders.

Well it does cause disadvantage, you just have to look at H4 and the loadouts/ordnance/etc to see how much an option like that can change the gameplay. Even the sensibility changes everything.
As I said, to see the diference you just have to play Halo Custom Edition with 120º FOV in mid-short combat range.
I remember when some console games used to have increased FoV if you played in widescreen. At least TimeSplitters Future Perfect had that.
Anyway, I would like to have a higher FoV. It makes the movement feel much faster and close combat becomes easier. Sometimes close combat has felt a bit chaotic when neither of the players know where each other is. I swear I died like gazillion times on Halo 2 on PC because of that. :I

Everyone can max out the same slider.
Though I would prefer Halo 5 was designed with a specific FoV for a specific map size to get the right feel of speed instead of having variable FoV.
Look at videos where they ramp up the FoV on Halo 3. Yes, you seem to be moving faster, but you also seem to be moving along ridiculously long distances. Increased FoV with smaller maps will give the best results.

That’s akin to everyone saying you can just use the same gun as everyone else if it is OP. It doesn’t change the fact that it is unbalanced. Personally I just tend to play the hand dealt to me. Could Halo use a bigger FOV? Maybe, I’ve never been particularly bothered by the peripherals.
If they are going to change FOV though, make it static for everyone because not everyone knows or cares about changing FOV or even going into the options for that matter. I only go in to change my sensitivity and audio levels to optimize it for headsets.

That’s a bad analogy. Then the only reason we care about whether that weapon is overpowered or not is diversity. Having different weapons with different strength and weaknesses produces a multitude of choices and strategic option. The same does not apply to field of view. If the FoV is not variable, everyone is restricted to the same FoV anyway. If it is variable, then everyone picks the one they are the most comfortable with, usually the one they perform best with.
Your weapon is, and is supposed to be, a strategic choice. Different weapons are designed to have different advantages. Lower field of view on the other hand is always worse. The only reason you would ever want to choose a FoV that is worse in theory is that you are more comfortable with it, and it allows you to perform better. In the end of the day, everyone will choose the field of view that is the most optimal to them.
If you want an analogy, it’s more like going from a sandbox with only one weapon to begin with to a sandbox with multiple weapons, one if which is better than all the other. There is no reduction in strategic depth, and the only reason you would ever want to choose a worse weapon is if you personally performed better with it.
> If they are going to change FOV though, make it static for everyone because not everyone knows or cares about changing FOV or even going into the options for that matter. I only go in to change my sensitivity and audio levels to optimize it for headsets.
Ignorance and lack of willingness aren’t good reasons not to implement a feature. If the player doesn’t know what FoV does, they can be educated. If the player doesn’t care, they probably don’t care about their performance either.

Your statement kinda stand against your main point.
You say that having a FOV slider is bad because on PCs, Players can have better machines.
But Halo isn’t on PC. Its on Xbox. Everyone is one equal hardware (Excluding Moniters).
Everyone would have the same console. The same preformance. And the same options for their FOV.
A players FOV isnt about making them better at the game. Its about making it more confortable for the player.
I can crank up the FOV to insane numbers on TF2. But that doesn’t make me a good player. It just means I cam adjust the game so that It doesn’t make me sick when I play it.
A High FOV doesn’t influence balance as much as you guys are saying. If anything, It barely changes anything beyond making he game more confortable for players.
I’d at least like a nice stock FOV. Halo Reach’s 78° FOV was nice. One of the highest console first-person FOVs I’ve seen. Around 80° is a sweet point for most as it doesn’t have the fish-eye effect but also doesn’t make it seem like you’re looking into binoculars all the time.
I believe Halo 4’s FOV was 60°? Almost unplayable for me on my computer monitor.
> A High FOV doesn’t influence balance as much as you guys are saying. If anything, It barely changes anything beyond making he game more confortable for players.
I higher FoV lets you see slightly more on your screen. Though that’s not a huge advantage.

The 90° player will see the enemy before the 60° player. That gives the 90° player the opportunity to fire multiple shots before the 60° player even sees him. That’s a huge advantage depending on the situation. I personally don’t believe FOV sliders have a place in PvP environments. Single-player games, definitely.
