I mean I always figured that the reason S2s were NCOs because officers don’t typically do that much field work. But since we sort of threw that theory out of the window by Reach, do you figure dear old John is up for a promotion past Master Chief?
I actually don’t think so since if he were to get a new rank he wouldn’t be the Master Chief. Just like Commander Shepard, he didn’t get a promotion for saving the galaxy either.
It’s because Bungie didn’t really give a thought to the character when they first created him, and were kinda stuck with him being a Master Chief Petty Officer from CE on, because he will forever be identified by the name “Chief” and nothing else.
In fact, his rank is one of the most obsurd things in all of the Halo canon, but it’s also one we’ll always be stuck with.
> He’s already the highest rank he can achieve in the Navy…
Really? He’s an Admiral of the Navy? I must have missed when that happened.
But anyway.

Yea I suppose that’s true. I just find it really, really weird as these games go by and everyone ranks up past him when he consistently has the best file of any serviceman.
> well by all rights hes earned the highest rank possible.
>
> thing is, hes the most valuable ground option there is. so he’ll always remain on the ground, until hes too old i guess.
Well I mean. That’s what I figured up until we had Noble team with Commander Carter running ground ops on a regular basis.
If I recall - and I’m not military so forgive me if I’m wrong - MCPO is the highest NCO rank in the Navy. He didn’t go through Officer School from what I understand, so he’s literally the highest rank he can be as a non-officer.
Perhaps Carter and some SIIIs, and IVs did go through NCO. It would make more sense considering the IIIs were volunteers (even if they were children asked shortly after their planets and families were eradicated), and the IVs are fully consenting adults.
he already holds the highest possible enlisted rank, and guys like him and men at his level will never become officers
yeah sure, even a second lieutenant whose like 24 years old has the power to order chief around, but it NEVER happens in real life, theres to much respect for people like the chief, thats why he never salutes people like Captain Del Rio or Palmer even though they are officers
im sure youve noticed alot of officers and enlisted men and women are in awe of the chief when he shows up, he needs no introduction, he is respected WAAAAAY more than people like Del Rio, officially officers Command, but unofficially most of the time, the Senior Enlisted men and women are calling the shots, its like an unspoken rule or an understanding etc etc
not to discredit officers, there are plenty great ones

Similar to how even though Del Rio ordered him arrested, literally nobody raised a finger against him (many still saluted or greeted him), and Lasky even gave him the figurative keys to a fully loaded Pelican.

In the enlisted ranks, he’s as high as he can go. You just don’t go from enlisted to officer. It’s not like you finish out your NCO career and then become an Ensign.
It’s stupid he was ever an enlisted man in the first place. No military in the world would allow an elite soldier like that to be under the command of the lowliest, greenest, 22 year old butter bar. But “Master Chief” sounds better than “Lieutenant Commander” or something, so that’s what Bungie made him. Of course, all Spartans since have been some kind of officer. I suppose it could be logical for Chief to be promoted to Warrant Officer, like some of the members of Noble. He could still be “Chief” if he was a Chief Warrant Officer. That would technically make him an officer, but would still put him very far down on the totem pole.

Exactly ^
Mainly for 2 reasons
Utter Respect for a Man such as the Chief who could bark down Palmer if he felt like it and she would shut up (but chief doesnt roll like that anyways)
spoiler Del Rio probably got demoted or Discharged or something of such measures for leaving the chief on requiem against the chiefs advice, im glad fleetcom recognizes that this particular enlisted man is more important than even the Captain of the UNSC flagship
> I may be beating a dead horse, but like everyone else has said, he already holds the highest enlisted rank he can achieve. So no promotion.
>
> Plus, you can’t make Master Chief not…Master Chief!!
Have you guys really never heard of a battlefield commissions? Like I know they’re rare but Fred was promoted to Lieutenant by Kurt on Onyx and I imagine Carter, Kat, and Six were promoted to officer ranks similarly since the S3 program was supposed to be super secret and all which probably prevented them from OCS.
Now granted I would have said that the need isn’t/wasn’t dire enough for that to happen before Reach, but now I’m just sort of scratching my head.
He could be made a mustang but maybe he has something against officers… at least some officers. Just look at his rebel side with Captain Del Rio. I don’t think he suffers fools glady… and he likes Lasky from back during the CAMS rescue. The bit where Lasky asks him if he has any experience securing LZ’s with a grin on his face refers to that. So I think he’s one of those NCOs who will help officers he respects and do as little for those who he doesn’t respect.
Look at how he dealt with Lord Hood, Both Captain Keys and even Johnson (who was a lower rank but a true green marine). Hell, he even got on with the Arbiter.
Talking about promotions, I wonder why Lasky wasn’t promoted when he was given the Infinity after the Admiralty board took the the Captaincy off Del Rio.
This is why I like Halo… it’s more than a game… it’s a true SciFi adventure.
> Wasn’t he promoted @ the end of halo3 to Master Chief of the Navy or something like that?
That would still technically be the same rank. It would just imply he’s the highest ranking amongst the Master Chief Petty Officers. In the Air Force, our Command Chief Master Sergeants are technically the highest enlisted man within a particular Wing, and work directly for the wing Commander, while the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force works, correspondingly, for the Air Force Chief of Staff (highest ranking officer in the Air Force). I don’t know exactly how it is in the Navy… but I’m sure it’s similar.
