So are we going to see Custom Button Mapping?

There are well over 100 topic and threads on the internet concerning the controls of Halo 4.
To us this makes or breaks the game completely.
We as gamers have our own style of gaming. And for a game to completely disregard any previous consistency of not only the past Halo games but other games as well is just poor game design.

Now I know we are unaware of most of the development of Halo 4.
But heavy criticism comes from Halo 4 controls.

Consistency.

I have played numerous Halo games and what stayed true to it all is the standard. LT as grenade, RT as shoot, A to jump, RS button to zoom in, LS button to crouch, and etc.

But now that we are seeing the game evolve with much added new features such as armor abilities and sprint.

Sprint in Halo Reach has been assigned as LB and we are used to it in other game playlists when no other armor abilities are available.
This LB as sprint has been a routine factor in most games like Saints Row the third or Elder Scrolls Skyrim (a game we have poured hundreds of hours in), Halo Reach (another tons of hours).

Now 343 decided that LB is armor abilities, so where does sprint go you say?

It’s assigned to either X in recon or LS button.

This is annoying to gamers. To us either X was to reload and LS was to crouch.

There is so many disruptions going on for Halo. and forcing gamers to specific only control types is just bad game design.

You neglect not only consistency but also accessibility to gamers.

The casual crowd won’t care but what of the hardcore players, the players who have been with Halo since the beginning.

Does 343i care or even try to appeal to hardcores anymore. Is 343i really listening to the fan feedback?

When numerous games allow flexibility and accessibility for custom button mapping ranging from Resistance, which I enjoyed. The best feature is selecting from control types but allowing customization of buttons and saving those customized controls in 3 slots. Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, Marvel VS. Capcom, all those fighting games. And each round in a fight is minuscule to a Halo round. Players are able to adjust to their control preferences.

It’s 2012 and we should be more aware of customization for players.
Forcing players to wield a new control style is disrupting especially if we go back to play previous Halo titles for achievements or even story.

343i please stay consistant and keep ALL your fans around by making them accessible. Put in Custom Button Mapping it will make a whole worlds of difference to us veteran players and hardcore Halo fans.

TL;DR:

Allowing Custom Button Mapping for Controls in addition to Preset Control Configs

PROS:

  • Accessible to Vet players
  • No more complaints from the community.
  • We’ll love 343i more, they are truly listening to the fans
  • Consistency with the franchise and other games.
  • Avoid hate, flaming, twitter annoyances, Facebook spamming etc.
  • Win win situation

CONS:
There are none

343 made up some bullcrap excuse that they can’t do it. They’re just lazy. So no, we’re not getting in Halo 4 unfortunately.

I can’t remember exactly what he said, but I think Frankie already explained why they wouldn’t be able to do so.

Half the pro’s you can simply put as “we’ll shut up about it.” I don’t think it really gets us anywhere to implicitly extort 343 with “give us what we want or we’ll keep annloying you!”

Accessibility, however, is not what this will add. Veteran players to Halo have certainly found an existing control scheme (that 343 will doubtlessly adapt as best possible to Halo 4) that they’re happy enough with. In fact it’s hard to imagine any optimal layout that isn’t covered by at least what Halo games were running with before. Thus if you allow people to use custom settings you allow them to deviate from the tried-and-true layouts 343 will have certainly playtested the hell out of in development. Now for some that’ll work out great as they find those few open niches but I don’t trust people here enough to think that the majority will do anything more than screw something up.

That in itself isn’t a problem, the chance to fail is what makes life interesting, but it’s not making the game more accessible. It’s adding more control.

I WANT TO SHOOT WITH “A” AND SWITCH WEAPONS WITH “LT”!

but seriously, there are no cons to custom button mapping.

Wanna know what a con is? Having to go through and debug every possible combination of button schemes on the controller to make sure that there isn’t some game breaking glitch by setting your trigger (on the gun) button to A and say jump to the right trigger. It’s a very tedious and ridiculous process.

Knowing some stuff about programming and doing it with PC gaming, its sort of a pain in the -Yoink- to create a checks system to make sure that all the actions you need are accounted for but not sharing a button.

Unless you really want H4 to come out in another year, they’re not lazy it would just take to long and its probly not in the budget to add that feature.

In short? 343i are too lazy to test all possible button variants and make sure there are no glitches.

It is incredibly unfair not to allow players custom button mapping.

The control schemes available are IDEAL to some players. They get to play the game the way they want to, with a scheme that fits and facilitates their playing style.

The rest of us are forced to choose between cancer or -Yoink!- as each scheme leaves us with a handicap of one kind or the other.

They could keep the schemes, but add custom mapping in an “Advanced Settings” tab.

I’m at a slight disadvantage whenever I tried to jetpack with bumper jumper but I think we are perfectly fine. We have plenty of control schemes. There must be a reasonable explanation to the exclusion of custom button mapping. I’m sure there are issues caused simply because Halo 4 is a console game.

Creating something like that for a professional programmer is very easy… “It’s a very tedious and ridiculous process.” There’s only 16 different buttons and two axises! The button mapping controls could all be on one screen and most people would be able to figure this out with ease.

Are there any Xbox 360 games that have a custom button mapping option?

I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, but I just have not heard of an Xbox 360 game that has this feature.

Well shoot. I’ve been playing that game since it was first released and I did not realize that it has custom button mapping. Thanks for the reply. Now I know that it was possible for Halo 4 to have this feature.

yup yup :D, wish more game creators would do this. Seems like it would be an easy addition

If it is truly a big deal that melee isn’t your Right Trigger and grenade isn’t your A button. I think your complaining to complain. Does BF3 or MF3 or Tom Clancy games allow it? I didnt think so. Its because its easier to program, easier for mass amounts of players and most of the preferred button swaps are covered by set control schemes.

Its a control scheme for a more civilized age. Not as random or clumsy as default settings.
