So I’m extremely excited about Halo Wars 2! I’ve been waiting for this announcement for quite some time. Can’t believe this is actually happening.
One thing I do want to discuss is Serina and her role in the next installment in this franchise. Serina is the smart AI that served the UNSC Spirit of Fire under Cpt. Cutter during the events of Halo Wars. Serina began her service on January 7, 2530. As we know, smart AI’s last approximately 7 years before they are terminated or they go rampant and think themselves to death. As we know, some AI’s are able to control their rampancy for a while before they eventually all die.
Depending on when Halo Wars 2 takes place and asssuming there’s no cryo sleep for AI’s like there is for humans, Serina might not exist any more. For all we know the UNSC Spirit of Fire has been drifting in space for more than 30 years before the events of Halo Wars 2 happen. Not any AI, no matter how strong it is would be able to survive this long.
What do you think her fate will be? Or will the game take place before she is corrupted?
I think Serina would only exsist if the events of HW2 pick up right after HW1. Since HW1 was set in 2531, and even if they bring the game 20 plus years later she probably didn’t survive. AI’s don’t have cryo and like you said only have a 7 year life span. The Spirit of Fire, Cutter and the Red Team have been MIA. It would not surprise me one bit that the game will either begin or end with The Spirit of Fire and Red Team or just Red Team being found in the current Halo Time. Hell, they brought Sgt. Buck and Jun back via Halo 5 game and Halo: Escalation comics …and I would assumed Cutter is dead by now. Who knows…But I’m excited.
I sooooo want her back…maybe she found a way to shut herself off or something so she did not go rampant. I already lost one -Yoink!- blue AI let’s not lose another ok?
I’m thinking the game takes place in 2534 because of the whole “lost with all hands” deal-eo.
So that’d only make her 4 years old. And HW1 ended in 2531, which means she’d be by herself doing nothing for 3 years. Now whether or not that accelerates rampancy or not, I don’t know.
I am very curious what 343i will do with her in HW2.
I was thinking somewhere in the present Halo universe, it’s likely seeing as most of the crew was in cryo sleep only the few who were still awake to manage the ship would have aged about 20-27 years, making my precise guess to be in between the years 2550 and 2558. If the picture in Halo Escalation is at the same year the comic is happening in, which it probably is, then it may be happening in between those years, as it says in this article:
During the 27-year period, and despite the measures imposed by the Chief Medical Officer O’Neil, at least one Flood infection form managed to infiltrate the ship. In 2558, the Spirit of Fire had reached an unknown multiple star system and drifted near a terrestrial planet.

Now we have no confirmation that the flood infection form infected anyone but we don’t know that yet. At first I was thinking Red Team was trying to escape the flood on the SoF but wouldn’t they try to take as much of the crew with them? Or maybe they did and were separated by the brute. To me, a reasonable time period for the events of HW2 to take place in would be 2550-2558.
Well. You guys get the legendary ending. She wakes Captain Cutter up at the end of the credits. Saying they had a problem.
This game has to be 0-5 years after Halo Wars. I don’t understand why everyone keeps thinking it’s going to be in 2558 because of Halo Escalation. It’s very possible the whole crew abandoned ship and failed to scuttle the ship and it’s been left adrift for 30 years
