Hey all,
I’ve probably logged 1500+ games in Team Snipers in Reach. It’s easily my favorite playlist. I do have to admit, though, that I get a little frustrated when the vote is between Snipers Pro on Hemorrhage and something like Reflection or Countdown and the vote goes 7-1 in favor of the latter.
IMHO, Hemorrhage is the only map in the playlist that is truly suited to snipers. Epic sight lines, tons of great perches, etc. Boardwalk and Uncaged can be alright too. Countdown and Reflection just turn into use-your-sniper-like-a-shotgun fests. They would be way better suited to a Team Shotties playlist than Team Snipers, as far as I’m concerned.
What are your thoughts on this? Clearly, a lot more people like the smaller maps than Hemorrhage, otherwise it wouldn’t get not voted for so often
In a nutshell? Because it’s a boring camp fest.

This, and it’s so slow the score limit is almost never fully reached by either team.

That’s pretty much the opposite of my experience. Maybe 1 or 2 people occasionally try to hang out all game on Red’s back ridge or Blue’s right wall, but for the most part people push the area by Red’s portal and try to control map position. The game is a little slower-paced, I’ll grant you that. I think Uncaged might have the best mix between a reasonably fast pace and long enough lines of sight to truly be “snipers.” The problem with Uncaged, of course, is the spawns. Ugh.
::shrugs:: Every time I’ve played snipers on Hem it’s a camp fest. People may go to the portal exit area but then they just camp there. There are long sight lines but that discourages virtually ANY map movement, really. Plus, add in all the disadvantages to blue spawn and the faults with the map…It just doesn’t make for a pleasant game at all.

Yeah, I’m probably just overreacting because I really dislike playing on smaller maps where people just pop around corners and twitch snipe you in the face. I can appreciate the point about map movement, but then again I like having one map in the playlist where you don’t have to worry about get assassinated if you just hang out in one spot for 15 seconds like you do on Boardwalk or Uncaged, where the game spawns people literally right below you / 10 feet from you.
Don’t know why…I just don’t enjoy that map.
It’s usually as boring as where ODSTs jump. Especially when people quit all the time, never actually finishing a game
I agree with OP - I like Hem mainly because of the long sightlines.
Powerhouse is another favorite, as is Hang-Em-High with the Anniversary Snipers.
Hem is a great map, as you said one of the only real maps suited to the playlist, I’d love them to bring back more open spaced maps for the playlist, maybe incorporate some of the community suggestions, like understandably they are busy working on H4/5. Like if they don’t feel like putting in the work (in a way, by no means do I mean to attack 343) take in some community feedback or maps in forge. Have a competition or something like they did a while back in REACH.
IMO Countdown is an alright map for snipers but it’s just enclosed, it makes it harder to move around in a sniper fight as you’re really just zooming in and trying to avoid, the obstacles (beams, doors etc) .
Granted Hem, is as some people say really just a camp fest but in all seriousness, sniping is for patience, and in saying that yes it does take away from the game a little but it’s true.

I can’t stand anniv. snipers. It disrupts the flow of “one with the magnum”.

Yeah, I know - and truth be told I usually make more kills with the M6 than the long rifle!
But when you’re heart-sick of constant Prisoner and Beaver Creek then a little slice of Snipers makes a pleasant change.
Snickerdoodle summed it up perfectly, everyone just camps due to the nooks and crannies offered on hemorrhage and the long site lines

Anni snipes on Headlong. Mongoose sniping FTW.

I can understand that but usually I’ll come home after being at boarding school for a month or two, then hop onto the Anniversary playlist thinking magnums only to get the ballet tipped by one vote for snipes on Headlong. It wouldn’t be so bad if this didn’t happen on a consistent basis you understand…
Your title kind of is a rhetorical question… Same as why people get annoyed playing the map on BTB. Someone manages to get hold of a sniper and never gets killed, and also seems to have an endless supply of bullets and never dies and then he/she gets a cheap perfection by hiding afterwards…
It’s been interesting to read people’s responses. It’s good to see some others really like it
I suppose my experience on the map has just been a little different than others. And I have to say, the map plays very differently now than it did a year or two ago. People have really smartened up. No one on the red team dares to go up on the cliff on their left wall. It’s guaranteed instant death. Similarly, no one on blue team goes through the cave on their left wall. Also guaranteed instant death. Instead, people spawn, try to take out whoever was holding them down, and then push to a more advantageous spot. Map control is so important on that map. If you’re getting stuck in a bad spot can easily lead to getting spawn camped. On the flip side, pushing into your opponents’ side of the map can really turn the tides in your favor.
Anywho, I just like the pace of the game on that map. And above all, I like it being about knowing where your opponents are and making good snipes, not twich shooting and pummels like a lot of the smaller maps promote.
On Hem, as Blue, my favorite spot is immediately behind the initial spawn, the rocks near the water.
You’re almost guaranteed a ‘First Strike’ as someone Red runs up the cliffside track (I like it best when they crouch and peek their tiny wee heads above the skyline: KA-BLAMM! SCORE ONE FOR THE GOOD GUYS!)
