Hi, I was wondering if anyone could either send me to an existing thread, or give me some tips (advanced tips, I no the basics for sure) on how to use the sniper rifle more effectively. I am somewhat having a hard time getting those headshots consistently. My aim isn’t exactly great at the moment. Also, would you as well state the sensitivety you use, I currently use 3-Default, though I have also heard 4 is good. Thanks!
One of the main things people forget about is positioning: Position yourself so that you have a view over choke-points on maps etc., this will definitely help you pick off those easy kills.
You’ll also want to change your scope zoom to fit the situation. In a cross-map long-distance situation (most likely in BTB) it’s sometimes applicable to use the full double zoom, but in almost all situations you are just going to be using the first level of zoom. Besides what I previously stated and if you’re under pressure and going for a quick no-scope, you’ll really want to just zoom in once.
Use whatever sensitivity works for you, however I personally use 4 (Recon) and I love it.
If you want some practice at sniping feel free to add me on Xbl: I Subtle I , I would be very happy to accommodate you in some Octagon 1v1s or whatever you want that suits you.
Anyone else that’s down for some 1v1s also feel free to add me
/shameless plug
I’m no expert but a few tips I have are these:
-Use the left stick more than the right stick. Obviously use the right stick to put the reticle level with the head, but strafing into the shot gives you more accuracy as your eliminating any movement on the y axis
-Use markings on the maps. Many maps have lines that are at headshot level, so if you are expecting someone to come around a corner, line the reticle up with the marking in anticipation.
- Quick-scope in close-quarters rather than no-scope. Zoom in, fire, and press Y to get out of zoom faster. You have more aim-assist while scoped in. This allows you to attempt a shot before whipping out your secondary to make it an easier kill. If you miss, no big deal, because you changed to your secondary when you zoomed-out.
-As Subtle posted already, play a lot of Octagon.
@Subtle- Add me if you want, I’m always down for some 1v1s or Octagon
Octagon won’t help your sniping. Do custom 1v1s, 2v2s or 4v4s and focus on your positioning.
If they’re walking in a straight line and they’re in close range, put the reticle at a place where you think their head will be, and when it crosses through, pull the trigger!
At long ranges, I find it helps to “trail” their head as they’re moving and simply pull the trigger as you pass over it!

it can, but it helps a very weird and obscure sniping talent (they see you, you see them, you both have DMRs AND sniper rifles, and you are both spawn killing… wtf kind of scenario is this lol)
if you want some sniping tips, learn from the best!
i would bump up your sensitivity to 4. thats what ninja uses and hes one of the best snipers in reach i’d say. 3 is just too slow. especially if people are sprinting because you cant catch them with your reticule (depending on the range).
some tips from me are:
1.) high ground. stop durdling around on the bottom of maps. its terrible, and it always will be terrible in every single halo game. its called ‘top control’ for a reason. controlling the top often times wins you the game by default against people in MM who arent that great.
2.) choke points. learn them all. learn every map. learn all the angles. whenever you see a potential angle, stop what you are doing (if you arent eating bullets lol), and go check it out. maybe its another super good sniping line of sight.
3.) know where to be, and when to be there. you might be super good at sniping, but if you are never or rarely in the right place at the right time, someone else who will be is probably better off using the sniper.
4.) practice makes perfect!
5.) this game has a bit of ‘swipe snipe’ to it. if you shoot ALMOST on target, you can drag the reticule to the target (super fast, and you cant ‘swipe’ that much at all) to land hits. try it! its very effective once you learn it. its kinda hard to get a feel for it, but eventually you’ll get better and better at it!
6.) try no-scoping people who arent interested in you. the best way to do this is to put your reticule in front of your target, then simply shoot when they run thru your reticule. you can also do the little twitch + swipe snipe to help out a bit, or a twitch + zoom in snipe can work well too.
