Should Halo Infinite keep the ‘lens flare’ caused by a zoomed-in sniper rifle from Halo 5? I’m curious to see what the general opinion is about this.
My personal thoughts: a part of me thinks “is this really necessary to keep?”. The flare fits H5’s fast-paced style well, as it’s harder to keep up with enemy movement due to all the crazy mechanics. But given how Infinite seems to be backing away from Spartan abilities, I don’t know if it’s really crucial to keeping the game balanced anymore. Sniper trails tell a player where their enemy is firing from, after all. At the same time, though, I kinda like the feature. It’s good at giving people a chance to duck to cover, which is great for dealing with campers who would otherwise go unnoticed until it’s too late. Then again, only a master sharpshooter lands 100% of their headshots. I’m torn on whether I think it’s balanced or putting snipers at an unfair disadvantage. What do y’all think?
I think it’s good to have some kind of indication that reveals a sniper before they fire just to discourage sniper camping in games like BTB. Camping is antithetical to the intended style of play in Halo, and attempts should always be made to discourage it. Not having the advantage of stealth should get snipers moving more.
What kind of indication should be used is definitely worth considering though. I haven’t played Halo 5 in a while, but I remember the flare being a bit on the obnoxious side. But that may be more of a matter of tweaking the parameters than redesigning the whole thing.
Maybe if it were something that was gamemode specific, and could be turned on or off in custom games. Slayer gametypes could have the flare, while objective gametypes could be flare-free.
Overall H5’s was filled with visual noise coming from all sorts of places, but I did like the concept of the sniper lens flare. It’s a subtle way of discouraging sniper camping and makes it less frustrating to get sniped. Perhaps instead of a lens flare effect, a sort of red pulse could flash from the sniper user. Something akin to airplane lights.

I like the current iteration of the sniper flare…
But against a decent sniper the flash could be a thousand lumens brighter and it wouldn’t matter. By the time you see it they have well and truly pulled the trigger.
I guess I’ll be the one to bring up that Halo 5 also introduced adding lights to the shotgun and scattershot, which attempts to tip off the victim before he gets too close to the shotgun holder.
The sniper lens flare, I don’t care too much about. But it was fun to bait unsuspecting enemy players close to you then quickly pop them with the shotgun. Halo 5 made that more difficult, which I don’t really like.
Id say keep the sniper flare, remove the shotgun lights. But they’re not really deal breakers to me either way.
Due to it being much easier to snipe in Halo 5 I thought the lens flare made it really well balanced. Basically it just depends on how difficult it is to snipe in Halo Infinite, if it’s easy then yes there should be a flare, if it’s more difficult like Halo 3 then there shouldn’t be a lens flare.
