Smurf accounts

This is not a bash on people using them I just wanna see if people agree with using them and if you don’t how in the next halo title for the ranking system should they handle them.

What is the SMURF?

Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but what is a smurf account?

Smurf accounts are accounts people create after already having an account with the intent to play at a lower elo (or average ranking skill) because they grew tired of playing at their rank. (This happens a lot in Overwatch, people in Grand Master will make alt accounts to throw games and end up at say Bronze or at least Silver, maybe even Gold to climb back up or just stay there by doing a win/loss streak rotation)

Personally, I don’t like smurfs because it really messes with a competitive ranking structure. People who generally are getting better end up getting stuck in ranks they’re trying to climb out of because they keep getting smurfs on the other team when they get so close to ranking up finally.

Smurfing is mostly done in League of Legends however; in halo 5 a smurf is a (generally high ranked) player who makes a new account to play against lesser skilled players.

Pros-

  1. Quicker matchmaking times
  2. Easier games

Cons-

  1. They ruin the ranks of mid tier players
  2. In social games they almost always get the most kills. Carrying a team that should have lost to victory by themselves alone (and thus used for gaming montages.)

personally I hate smurfs. I spent a good 7 months stuck in gold 5 for h5 because everytime I’d hit platinum we would lose to 1 guy who is level 10 and he is going +20 Kd or higher. Afterwards when I wasn’t playing against smurfs I would rank Diamond 3 consistently and could work my way up to onyx. The arena ranking system is way better in h5 but Warzone is just garbage at the mid to higher ranks. Every other game would be 12v5.

Given the recent stance 343 has taken on matchmaking manipulation in Halo 5, I surmise that smurfing will be frowned upon in Infinite, and that attempts to trick the ranking system by throwing matches or carrying people to higher ranks will be foiled. Simply playing an alternate account will probably be fine, so long as one plays the same way on the alt as they would on the main account.

The cons of this can ruined the gameplay

I was totally against smurfs myself. However, the work done on the matchmaking side of things recently has made me a bit more accepting of them. As Chimera mentioned above, players who play with alternate accounts normally won’t get banned. But the ones who are detected for manipulating the system will get bans. To me, that’s a fair system. I still don’t necessarily like the idea of experienced players making new accounts, partially because the concept itself is odd to me, but at least all the other players are protected by the actions of smurfs thanks to the improvements made to the matchmaking system.

I have no issue with second accounts. I have a second account I play on when I want to just chill and play solo. I do have a problem with manipulating the MM to match against players significantly below your true skill level. I play to win on my second account and am about the same CSR on second and this account.

Fortunately, 343 has cracked down on rampant smurfing and MM identifies their true skill level pretty quickly. I’d say my second account was matching against players of the appropriate skill level within 3 - 5 games.

It’s never really bothered me as long as they’re playing the game. Idlers with alternate accounts are the worst, though.

I don’t have anything against second accounts, I have one account but I know some players will manipulate the system. As mentioned 343i are actively trying to stop manipulation and there is not much more that can be done about smurf accounts. The only way to limit smurfs is to limit how many accounts an Xbox can create, but I don’t see Microsoft doing that, not all households can afford multiple consoles and the tv sets to match them. I know families that can only afford one console where several siblings will have accounts. It’s not going to change imo.
