Smoke and Shadow - Gek

Smoke and Shadow: A breath of fresh air into the Halo Universe.

Roughly one month after Halo: Smoke and Shadow’s release, I scrolled through Halopedia’s character appearance list to discover that Gek was not only mentioned but present in the novel. Surprsiing I made a post discussing that Gek may be in Halo: Fractures prior to its release, and whilst it was all hope (as it had been for 4 years) that we’d see 'Lhar in some expanded fiction, it has finally come true.

Kelly Gay captures Gek flawlessly and some great nuances are embedded in the novel - Spoilers: Particularly that Gek’s ‘blindness’ in faith directly leads to blindness in his left eye. Taking away my Gek bias and the novel stands out alone as one of the best pieces of fiction in the Halo Universe.

But thankyou Kelly Gay for fleshing out my favourite character, and writing a masterpiece in general. Go check it out. Now.

He’s the elite who fought Thorne in hand to hand combat and never wore a helmet for some reason, right?

Correct.

What actually happens with Gek in the novel?

We get to see how Jul’s Covenant acquires vessels, weaponry and tech. As simplified as I can make it, Gek tags the best scavengers and loots what they find (Often killing/torturing them in the process) - 'Lhar often finding very useful tech such as luminaries.
'Lhar serves as the primary antagonist, we get to see how he loses his sight in his eye (The imagery used is rather terrifying), and he kills the second main character (Rions lover- A marine); a device used to set up a revenge arc as Rion promises to avenge him wherever Gek may be in the galaxy.

So, quite some heavy prominence if you’re a Gek fan-boy/girl (;
