SMG STILL O.P?!

Hello everyone! After watching some more recent gameplay in Halo 5, i noticed a lot of things. One of the things i still noticed is that the SMG is still OP as heck. I know it’s still in pre-release software, but you would think that 343i would apply the beta changes and feedback after the beta. Was our feedback honestly for nothing then? (No hate)

Also i noticed that in my opinion, the overshield (and possibly other power-ups) spawns over-frequently. It spawns it seems like every minute or so, because every time that guy respawned he grabbed overshield. I do believe that it took a little bit longer to spawn… am i correct on this one?

Anyways, thanks for reading everyone, and i’ll see you Oct. 27th

No, they released a list of changes they made directly based on peoples feedback and people have seen the difference. Just because they haven’t changed something you personally think should doesn’t mean the feedback was for nothing.

No you just suck

It honestly didn’t feel that OP to me in beta. It just isn’t a starting weapon anymore, and needed to feel like it was worth picking up. It’s an optimal short to medium range weapon, but still got beat out by DMR/BR in the long range.

The SMG was and is perfect. In fact I think all weapons were balanced very well, except for the AR doing a bit too much damage at long range but that was addressed when they nerfed the headshot modifier. No weapon is useless in this Halo, each and everyone has a specific purpose and fills it very well. If you didn’t play on a team(meaning not with randoms who don’t have mics) it may seem otherwise but you have to realize that the competitive side of the game, Arena (the beta in general), requires you to be on a team and communicating with them effectively. It is balanced around that fact and everything that comes with it.

It’s hard to consider it OP when it spawns on the map… It’s now essentially a weapon worth fighting for and should be treated as such…

dont get to close to the guy with the SMG… And preferably, make sure your team has it and the other team doesn’t…

If you are referring to Unishek’s vid from PAX, I would definitely chalk up the SMGs effectiveness to the fact that he was playing against inexperienced members of the press. At one point he started shooting at a dude from medium range and instead of turning to deal with him from a safe distance the dude just crouched and spun in circles until he died a few seconds later. Hardly a good example. If you watch some of his Beta gameplay where he’s up against semi-pros, he can not use anything besides a BR or power weapons or he gets dropped instantly. So if the SMG was not OP in that scenario, it definitely isn’t after it’s slight nerf.

I would say it’s finally viable, not op (: that’s what I loved about the beta, is to me, the weapons all had a good balance. It wasn’t BR or your dead no matter what.

Even 343I has acknowledged that the SMG was pretty OP in recent builds.

They’ve apparently added bloom since, but whether or not that is a proper nerf remains to be seen.

The SMG is ridiculous in this game.

Did you not watch the gamescon pro tourney? It was all SMG.

SMG is a good weapon. Worth using in close range. But vs an Assault rifle at medium range, it’s not going to win. And at long range, the AR Wins even harder (short controlled bursts work far better on the AR) But an SMG Should dominate extreme close range combat. short of using a melee power weapon.

Really? I thought most people used pistol. I think up close smg was used cause the ar was nerfed if I remember right…

I may have missed some recent gameplay, but I seriously doubt it (not discussing long-range though, the two weapons should be irrelevant for this combat range).

In H4, the SAW spawns on the map, yet it is still OP.

It’s a power weapon. It’s supposed to be OP. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s a power weapon, it’s supposed to be extremely powerful, so opponents fight to get a hold of it… That’s like saying the rocket launcher is OP.

the problem with the SAW in H4, was that you could randomly get it as a kill streak, ruining the games balance because you had no idea who had what, nor how to prepare for it …

What tournament where you watching? Pistol was by far the most used weapon…

mad because it does its job :joy:

How about waiting till you actually play the game before trying to decide if a weapon is OP or not? I just laugh at all these threads where people are trying to base judgement off of just watching a video and not actually playing the game.

I’m not complaining about a power weapon being a power weapon lol.

In the case of the SAW (unlike the rocket launcher since you mention it), it’s OP because the power weapon does not have any drawback/counterpart in its use.
It has : high dammage, very high RoF, huuuge ammo, very low spread (i.e. considerable range for an auto weapon).

Conversely, the RL is balanced with low ammo (2 or 4 rockets) and a finite projectile speed that makes the rocket possibly avoidable. The (UNSC) sniper is balanced because it also has limited ammo and is “relatively” difficult to use, unlike the shotgun for instance, which is very easy to master, but whose use/power is severely limited by its range.

TL;DR: my opinion is that “Power Weapon” is not, or should not mean “Free and easy kills”. It provides a team an advantage (well-deserved for the team who gets it, that’s the purpose indeed), but it has to be balanced in some way. That’s not the case for the SAW.
