What do you think is the smartest species in the halo universe? I personally think it’s the San’Shyoom
Gonna be the Precursors by a landslide on this one. But if we ignore any trans-sentient beings, then the Forerunners, followed by Ancient Humanity and the Ancient San Shyuum.
Depends on how you would define “smart”. If it’s in regards to technological level, then the Precursors take to crown by a mile, but they still couldn’t prevent their extinction at the hands of the inferior Forerunner civ, so foresight clearly wasn’t their strong suit. The Forerunners themselves were also highly naive and didn’t believe the Flood was a serious threat until it was too late to actually do something other than suicide the galaxy.
I’d actually give my vote to Anciant Humanity. For such a “young” species they were very advanced and had enough tenacity to “convince” the Flood to sparte them (even if part of that was just a ploy to mess with the Forerunners). Ancient San Shyuum were probably also highly impressive, but we don’t have context for them apart from their role in the alliance with Ancient Humanity.
I know it’s obvious, but I’m going to go with the Precursors, I mean they gave life to all in the galaxy, and although they may’ve been subject to genocide which some survived, I think their penultimate plan has yet to play out, just lurking over the universe. What I mean is that I think they still have something big in store, but idk what.

They are a Tier 0 Civilization meaning, that they can travel across galaxies and accelerate the evolution of intelligent life.
Even the forerunners could not obtain the Precursors level of advancement, the Forerunners consider the Precursors Tier 0 as a theoretical ceiling. Meaning not even the most advanced life forms, the Forerunners, could make it to their level.
