I may be naive, but can somebody please explain to me why a Level 40 can be matched with a level 15 in matchmaking. What happened to search 1-10 5-15 10-18 10-20 in halo 3. This single handedly ruins matchmaking. I often match players that are double my rank or players that have just purchased the game. Half of the reason ranks exist is so players can play with people of a similar rank! I really just dont understand
I’m not really sure how it works, but it might have something to do with already low playlist populations so it just tries searching you up with people regardless of rank. Ex. Whenever my friends want to play the Halo 3 playlist we always get really sporadic enemy ranks but when I play team doubles it is almost always evenly matched. Even if you did face a level 40 and got rekt, it wouldn’t matter for either team because you would lose hardly any exp. while they would gain almost nothing; but if you won you would get a load of exp. for beating someone with a much higher rank.
It’s the direct result of not enough people playing in that playlist. It’s supposed to match you with people within your ranking, but most playlists don’t have enough people to do that. Also Halo 3 I believe you could only match people 3 ranks below or above you, no matter what. Halo 5 ranking system is much better, so we just have to deal with it for a few more months.

Its actually in halo 3 on MCC where i see myself playing people 10 levels above me or below me.

not sure if you are literally speaking about xp or figuratively speaking about “xp”. Is there an actual amount of “xp” that u gain from beating higher rank. At level 8 i beat a team with a 50 and i didnt see rank 9
Yeah it isn’t a broken ranking system but moreso a lack of population.

Based on the way Halo 2’s ranking system worked (which is MCC’s as well), you should gain a larger amount of actual experience points you get from beating a team with higher ranks, but the system takes into account everyone’s rank. So even if there was a 50 on the other team, your team’s ranks and the other team’s ranks would be averaged out and you would gain experience based on those 2 numbers if you won. I’m not sure what ranks your team and the enemies were, but if the 50 was the only really high rank there then that would explain you not leveling up from that match.

How much exp do you need to rank from say 29-30? or 49-50 is there anyway to track that?

I’m sure there’s a site that has the exp required for each rank but looking at my OG Halo 2 guide book it says for rank 30 its having 20750 exp and getting to 22899 exp. Getting to level 50 requires 92250 exp in total. Also whenever you rank up you can’t be deranked until you hit 50% progress of your previous rank.

this was very helpful thank you. Drop the link to a site if you know one where you can track exp. I personally cant find one

also based off of this idea wouldnt it be very easy to create a booster account in mcc?

I was referring to original Halo 3, not MCC. Every ranked playlist in MCC is based off the same system used in Halo 2.
Bungie.net (this is as close to a guide I could find, and even then it’s very confusing)
Also, i’m not sure how someone could use the system for a booster account because if a level 1 is with a bunch of level 50’s then that level 1 would hardly gain any experience because the team’s rank would still average out to something really high.
The match ups seem so random now the levels are all over the place

ANother thing 343 couldnt handle- a basic, functioning rank system. Bungie always had teams of 4 matching up with one another and similar levels. People are earning their 50’s by searching as 4’s and playing random level 15s-20’s. I laugh in the face of anyone who has their 50 and brags about it. ZERO skill… just system abuse and grinding. Both of which I find dumb.
