Don’t get me wrong, I loved Halo 3’s ranking system, but Reaches never bothered me. Please don’t flame me either, I’m completely neutral on this.
So I’ve seen a lot of the competitive players on these forums protesting for a 1-50 or 1-100 ranking system in Halo 4. Now I’m sure that the main reason they want to include this is so they can visibly show how they compare to other players, or maybe it’s to match players better than in previous Halo’s . . . but aren’t we all overlooking something?
Our Battle Proficiency Ratings (BPR). Our BPR gives a general range of how skilled a player is, so what if our BPR’s are shown on our profiles on Halo 4? Then we have a visual system representing how good we are. In that case does it even matter how we rank up? You’ll have to start over in the next Halo anyway so why not just keep the progression ranking system and keep something that we can have around for every Halo game (the BRP)? That makes sense to me, but regardless . . . I could care less on whether or not we get 1-50 or a progression ranking system.
Again, please don’t flame, and feel free to discuss.
I’d like a visual representation of our skill alongside the rank based on experience.
Both. That would be perfect.
BPR is a foolish system to display skill.
Listen, statistics rarely shows accurately how well you played in a game. There are games where I have gotten fantastic statistics but played terribly as a TEAM PLAYER and there are games where I have gotten horrible statistics but played the best on my team. Good Halo play is more than just good statistics. The many variables which dictate how useful you were to your team cannot possibly be displayed in a single individualistic numerical form. It’s just too complex of an idea.
AND if matchmaking was good enough (and BPR was truly accurate) then everybody should have a BPR close to 50. Otherwise it just shows you’re playing against people of considerably lower “skill level” than you.
It also bundles your “skill” at different gametypes into one “overall skill”. I am a much better MLG player than I am a Team Snipers player for example. The BPR it would give me if considering only these two gametypes would be too low for my MLG skill level but too high for my Team Snipers skill level.
The only system which can be anywhere near to accurate of your skill level is simply a win/loss based system. No this is not completely accurate either but it’s the only system which makes any sense for (what was) a team based game.
I imagine BPR will play a considerable role in Halo 4 skill ranking and I am disappointed this will most likely be the case. I am not asking for 1-50, no. I am asking for something even better. BPR is not that.
BPR is pretty terrible for one thing, I am of above average skill but no where near the best yet I have a 100, and people don’t necessarily care for 1-50, some people might, but it’s more that I for one don’t want to constantly get matched with derps like I do in Reach, where the only place I can get a game with players of mostly even skill is MLG, but I don’t particularly like their settings.
I betray for snipe too much for my BPR to represent my skill lol.
On a serious note: Wins and losses are the only true way to determine skill level. It’s far too easy to rack up high stats, it is much more difficult to win consistently over and over again. I could camp my butt off on any map I please but it doesn’t mean I am a good player.
Not a fan of BPR at all… it means nothing to me.
