How many silver req packs does it take to unlock all the commons to rares? Or basically finish opening them?

You don’t get commons from silvers unless I’m mistaken. You basically just have to count in twos from rare to uncommon to check.

I’d check out the REQ Speadsheet set up by Fenris over on /r/halo. It’s what I use to keep track of things and it’s really helpful.

EDIT: Opening an un-edited version of it produces the following

  • Bronze: ~224 Packs (280,000 REQ Points) - Silver: 207 Packs (1,035,000 REQ Points) - Gold: 189 Packs (1,890,000 REQ Points)That’s the “efficient” Bronze -> Silver -> Gold route, totaling 3,205,000 REQ Points roughly depending on your luck with Bronze packs.

I highly recommend using this as well. It’s definitely helped me quite a bit.
Although, I don’t think it’s completely updated yet as the creator just got married like a week or two ago and he’s trying to get 343’s new algorithm implemented.

EDIT: Fenris tweeted out a little bit ago that he is putting in some of the changes tonight and for the next few days. Not sure about a full req update just yet.

I hear you guys, I have quite the ways to go myself but hey I do love my halo!
