That sleeping grunt’s friend shouldn’t have known I violently assassinated his nipple sibling.
What’s with that anyways?

Why do I find the first line of what you just said to be so damn funny? XD
Anyways, my giggling aside, I honestly have no idea. Usually they’re alerted because their friend just got popped in the face, but if he was asleep? I really don’t know!

You cant use that suppressed pistol to snipe a grunt half way across the map at night without alerting the whole covenant fleet.
Silencers don’t work the way you would think they do. The most they can do is make people in a fairly noisy area, not too close to the gun, not immediately recognize the sound as gunfire.

I know how suppressors work in real life.
I also know how they’re supposed to work in games.
They’re definitely not supposed to alarm people from far away. But as far as the covies are concerned my “bip bap bam” sounds more like “BANGGGGG BANGGGGGGG BANGGGGGG!!!”

Bungie just derped 10 years and never designed real silenced weapons.
The silencers suck in ODST. Don’t depend on them.
i always wondered the same thing, but i never gave it much thought because i usually traded the SMG out with the carbine the first chance i could get lol.
The Silencer for the SMG is just for looks, Bungie never exactly thought to actually change the enemies behaviour if it was being used, you are basically using an SMG with more recoil and a scope.
If you’re going for stealth in ODST stick with avoidance. The M7S really just deals more damage and has some better accuracy. The pistol might let you get away with some stealthy kills, but only of the target’s far enough away from any other contact.

Yep.
CE sniper was the closest and it was severely downgraded in H2 (no night vision, no silenced effect, halved damage).
They hear the gun as if it weren’t suppressed, I don’t know why because a stealth element would have made ODST even better IMO.
Stealth is still there in ODST, but like I said, it’s more about avoidance if anything. You can do some hit and run tactics, which are rewarding in their own sense, but I find that sneaking by totally undetected without firing a shot is admirable as well. Maybe if another ODST game comes around then the stealth element will be better explored.

Personally, I prefer to alert them with a single headshot, then snickering evilly while they futilely search for me. I literally had a Brute stalking the area, calling out to his Grunts to flush me out. Then he suddenly went silent…
Well there’s no such thing as a silencer. You can reduce the noise of the shot but not cancel it out. You want to take out sleeping grunts? Smack 'em with the gun instead of shooting them with it.
If a sequel to Halo 3: ODST were ever to be made, I think this is one of the first things that 343i should work on. Halo 3: ODST, despite the fact that it has you play as an ODST in a stealthy atmosphere/setting, really neglected to incorporate actual stealth elements into the game. The pistol and SMG could have been so much better.
Bungie could have changed AI behavior marginally to prevent them from hearing silences weapons. It would have been so much fun to quietly pick off enemy Grunts one by one in the darkness. That really would have made the gameplay much more rich and rewarding.
lol This original poster is pretty funny.

Either the UNSC silencers suck, or the Covenant just have super good hearing.
Or Bungie was just lazy and decided not to change enemy behavior.
If only the Silenced Weapons were actually stealthy…
