Shrapnel Mines

This is a 2 parter:

The grunts starting upgrade is shrapnel mines. It would of been nice if they could of had ‘plasma grenades’… maybe slightly weaker than their UNSC counterparts but hey ho. I base my main focus early game around map control and taking nodes so Iv been using the shrapnel mines as a nice little surprise for my opponent when they try to retake them. Other than that I can’t really see too much of a use for them other than early game… but, my other question was, if I remember rightly the individual upgrades for units in HW1 would also add a small damage boost/defence. That meant I would buy an upgrade even if it was trash just so my units were that little bit stronger.

Im 90% sure that was the case (correct me if I’m wrong) anyway does that apply in HW2?

I do think the Grunts shrapnel mines are useless. They take time to deploy and by the time you have deployed them then the game has moved on and they have little affect. I hope they replace it with something more effective though I doubt it.

Yeah they’re useless, plasma grendades would be 10x more useful

You’re correct, upgrades in HW1 also worked as global upgrades do in HW2 for specific units.

That being said, Grunt’s upgrades also increase dps from their guns.

As Blaky said, Shrapnel Mines increase DPS. That’s the only reason I research it.

I don’t think I’ve ever used a Shrapnel Mine in all my experience playing HW2.

Yeah you’re right in the first game upgrades like ‘New Blood’ and ‘Peons’ gave a 10% health and damage boost for each marine and grunt on those squads. Other upgrades like Gauss turret for warthog gave a good health increase of at least 20%.

Ahh nice… I’m glad of that then at least.

In HW1, Grunts had an upgrade to get Needlers if I recall. Maybe giving them those as a second upgrade would be nice. Or letting the Brute added in the second upgrade have a Brute Shot, giving them a good DPS increase.
