Should we be concerned? Playerbase dropped 42% this month on Steam

true…it also pretty much just worked flawlessly from day one as well.
Whether people liked it or not it was a quality product and free to play.
great game really.

This is true, but being popular for profit, and being popular for a quality type of game are 2 different things. Halo hasn’t had that high of a player base over the years and that isn’t a good thing at all vs other games. What you are talking about brings in the mindless players that are not a benefit to any game in terms of the company creating a quality type of game.

It’s just kids/teens throwing money at a business and nothing else.

Well we did learn that Players are locked out of cross core customization ever since a few YouTubers posted how the bots have this feature.

That alone kinda pissed me off, they never planned on us having a feature they have in game rather they wanted to completely lock us out of that feature and Drip feed us those same items over and over.

The whole they have to rebuild it and it’s going to take time was a lie, it’s in the program they just locked us out of it.

When they say it’s going to take time, ots really because they are giving the business and marketing team time to find a way to still monitize it heavily.

If the holidays are a roadblock to success for a Halo game, that shows something seriously wrong.

Not saying you’re wrong, but that’s why Microsoft always insists on getting the Halo games released for the holiday season.

Dude im a huge halo fan, been looking forward to this game for so long! Call me dramatic but the way this game has been handled asking so much money for basic stuff that should be in the game… like i feel i have to spend thousands of dollars over the course of the games seasons to just get what a normal game would include for a base price and it absolutely disgusts me.

343 and microsoft have taken a huge dump on halo and given me the middle finger all while holding out their hand for more money than they have any right to ask for this content.

I literally just sold my xbox and i didnt even finish the campain.

I cannot and will not get down with this utter BS.

Honestly screw 343 for what theyve done to the legacy of halo and if this is how future microsoft games are gonna be like especially with forza motorsport then i want no part of it.

There are way better games out there with loads of content that i can simply earn and feel a sense of accomplishment with and enjoy.

Il be playing on ps5 and switch and enjoying gaming, actually buying games for a set price and enjoying loads of content and properly made games.

Peace out. Halo will be missed, but not this pile of insane disrespectful greedy broken promises of a game. What a way to go out.

Obviously the main marketing strategy when it comes to holidays is to get the game out so everyone will be buying and playing them. The thing we’re seeing here is one of the rare instances where such a strategy could backfire as we are now seeing with the unexpected brokenness of BTB and no one doing anything about it until January due to said holidays.

While there are some fundamental development decisions around Infinite’s release that are rooted to its current problems its facing now - not just the F2P/BP model but just how much they’ve reworked the game compared to what it was in 5 - that requires them to accept and respond to feedback in a prompt manner - which, in my opinion, they had been doing beforehand before the holiday break - what has made it particularly devastating was an issue like BTB where it was working fine for the most part until it spiraled down right before the holidays.

Speaking for myself, if BTB was still working I’d have been more than content with just breezing through the holiday season playing it and enjoying it. As it stands now, I do feel a lot of what everyone else is feeling currently and praying for the holidays to go by faster.

Peer to peer matchmaking in ranked is absolute rubbish for us in Europe
Me and a lot of friends have stopped playing it

I’m not terribly concerned. PC population falling off is probably the closest thing we will get to disabling crossplay anytime soon.

Games drop all the time shortly after release. You play a game, decide its not for you then move onto something else or go back to what you normally play. Also Halo has always been a game that is very different from other games so its player base has always been smaller. Plus not everyone plays Halo on steam, we also have players using the Xbox app (Like me as I use gamepass to get the campaign for free).
Speaking of campaign, it hasn’t long been released and most people are probably completing it around now and aren’t multiplayer gamers. Some people choose to stay away from F2P games due to the heavy monetization. Plus Halo infinite multiplayer is literally unplayable without paying for the battlepass due to there being no other form of progression like a rank system the same as MCC. Its almost like they don’t want players to have fun unless they spend money.

You are aware not everyone on PC uses cheats. Its also 343i’s fault for not implementing any sort of anti cheat system because they wanted to rush the game out early. Plus there is also aimbots for console. They use capture cards and auto aim using the colours on the screen. They see a red name moving, lock on and when the reticle goes red they auto fire. The only difference is console players don’t get banned for cheating. Also if 343i decide to implement a good anti cheat system like Eazy that will stop people being able to inject files into the game stopping cheaters but they will still be an issue on console and no one will realize because people think console is perfect and not got any cheaters online.

Didn’t say anything about using cheats. I continue to buy consoles in an era where PC is vastly superior for one simple reason, to not have to deal with PC -Yoink!-

I couldn’t agree more. I understand that free games gotta make money but they didn’t make this free out of good will and as an advertising strategy for the Xbox. They done it so they could make more money then what regular game sells would do. They don’t give out any credits in the battle pass so you would have to pay for every single one. If this is gonna be the Halo game for the next 10 years, even with 2 seasons per year (Which is will most likely be more) thats 20 seasons at £8 per season thats £160 for a game. (If you buy all battle passes)
Ontop of that the only form of progression in this game is the battle pass, no rank system like in all other Halo games. This makes it so if you don’t put money into the multiplayer its as barebones as it can get. So its extremely boring and pointless playing. I knew when Microsoft decided to make this free it was gonna be monitized heavily. I didn’t expect it to be worse then EAs free game “Apex Legends”. If a game is more heavily monitized then a free EA game then there is seriously something wrong as that company has been seen in court multiple times for pushy tactics with micro-transactions.
Its stupid that you have to unlock everything more then once. Like colours only work with 1 type of armour. You have to unlock emblems for each thing you want to apply it to. Shoulder peaces don’t come in pairs. If you remove all the duplicates in the battle pass then you will probably have half the amount of tears. It should be called the scam pass. if this isn’t addressed in season 2 then I am done with this game aswell. I have been a fan of halo for 15 years but since 343i owned this game it has become a huge pile of crap. I don’t completely blame them as Microsoft are most likely the ones saying in what way they should monitize it to push the most profits. But this isn’t pushing profits, its pushing people out the door. People aren’t gonna buy store items if they can’t pair it with the armour they are using. People also see how scammy and expensive it is to enjoy this game and it deters them from playing it. There is a reason other games don’t pull this kind of scammy crap and that’s because the community wont react well with it and if we don’t react well then the game looks bad which will make it less successful. Its a complete embarrassment to the Halo franchise. I would rather buy my games then buy into this crap. I don’t mind buying a battle pass but I feel like I’ve been robbed with this game after realizing all this scammy crap.

I honestly am not surprised. We don’t have Forge, we don’t have Coop, the Store is too expensive, progression is still terrible even with the small updates to the progression and playlists. 343i has not inspire confidence with this disastrous launch.

Not entirely true. We know that on Steam the game peaked a little over 250k concurrent players when it was multiplayer only. And we we know that December 8 campaign launch didn’t spike players much. And we know from achievement statistics that it looks like fewer than 10% of players are playing campaign.

So the player trends can fairly be attributed to the multiplayer bleeding out players because of all the problems.

Successful F2P games do not drop players like this after a launch. For example, Apex Legends. There are some games like Path of Exile that drop players like this in between seasons, but even then they trend upwards over time on player count. Something tells me that season 2 of halo infinite will not see a peak player count anywhere close to 250k.

And the second part of this statement just tells me you are very young. Halo had either the largest or second largest active player base among all console shooters from 2001-2011 when 343 took over. It didn’t have a “small” player base until 343 released the epic disaster of a game called Halo 4 that decimated the player base.

2010 - the biggest exodus in the Bungie years was when they released Reach with no Ranking system!!!

@Primus_Ego_Sum In that case, I stand corrected and appreciate the additional information and clarification! I wasn’t aware that specific information was available to that degree, but what you said does make sense.

Reach held players ok for a year. It didn’t count concurrent players the same way as modern titles, so the raw numbers aren’t comparable to current numbers, but it had a 1M player count day a year after launch.

It definitely dropped much more quickly than halo 3 overall, though.

I’m not even surprised the game is dying already, the lack of content, no base ranking system, game lacks armor unless you drop money into it, Hackers are starting to take over because they had to make it free to play. I give the game maybe another month honestly. I do prefer the MCC over this to actually have a good time…

Store prices do really need to go down, no argument there, and I would assume that they will considering a lot of the criticism focused on that (although that hasn’t stopped the booming population of Iron Men-coated CatSpartans…) but they’re definitely going to make what they can until then.

Progression I think is more or less fine for me right now. Coming upon the end of December and I’m rank 97 on the Battle Pass with like 6-9 Double XP Boosts and 30 Challenge Swaps still available. For me I think its a good pace but I do think future Battle Passes could use a few more worthwhile rewards to replace those Boosts and Swaps with my top suggestion being in-game currency to use as plenty other games let you do for their BPs like CoD where you can just pay for the next Battle Pass if you complete the current one.

No Co-op or Forge is a pretty big blunder as Forge in particular could’ve added additional longevity, especially now. I do hope it manages to draw a bunch of people back when it comes out. The limited playlists hamper it as well.

There are plenty of justifiable reasons for players to just drop the game for now and wait for more content, but at least for me in particular I really like the gameplay and 343 had been pretty receptive and reactive to feedback before the holiday season. If they come back from the break and hit the ground running it’ll be enough to keep me around and I hope they’ll be able to draw people back in when they so bring in more options and content.
