Should we be able to customize chief in Infinite?

Since Halo infinite’s Campaign is going to be Open World
i really wish we can change chief’s appearance like in most open world games like Assassins Creed, RDR2, Spider man PS4, Doom eternal , Star Wars Jedi Fallen order, and etc. Like i know i might get backlash for this but what I’m saying is that would it be cool if we can change master chief’s armor to look like his old armor from previous games like for example.
The Mark V appearance from Halo Combat Evolved.
The Mark VI appearance from Halo 2 and 3 for Classic Halo veterans.
The Mark VI appearance from Halo 4 and 5 for people who like Halo 4 and 5.
The Mark IV appearance from Halo Fall Of Reach animated Movie.
The Mark IV from Halo Legends and Halo Forward unto Dawn.
The Mark IV from Halo: Silent Storm novel.
The 1993 Mark V armor
or even look completely different than just a spartan like,
Covenant Inspired armor, Forerunner Inspired armor, Banished Inspired armor, Rebel inspired armor and etc.
Give me your thoughts on this concept?

Customize Chief…No. someone in an earlier thread had an awesome idea for the Co-Op campaign that you play as Chief no matter who you are but the other people who you are playing with would visually look like their multiplayer character. I think that was the best plan.

I personally hope not

I mean it was just my opinion…there is no right or wrong answer. That’s what the forums are for…

No. The problem is, is that the campaign is canonical. That means, that Chief changing to Mk V or any other armour set, or any other colour, would not make sense. Halo is not an RPG. It has a grounded canon, which means that characters, by and large, maintain their looks throughout the game. It’s not airy and nebulous, and Chief is his own character. I’m not sure if you thought it appropriate, but I’d prefer to keep bath towel outfits, and sparkly unicorn armor sets out of Halo, especially the campaign. You are playing as Master Chief, not your multiplayer spartan.

It’s also likely that Halo Infinite will follow a linear story structure, and not be a true open world game. However, this could be untrue as 343i has neglected to share any such information, only using vague terms like “More open, more freedom” and that the game would not be true open world. So, whatever it ends up being, is a mystery right now. Customization worked in Reach because we were using a template character, essentially. Master Chief on the other hand has iconic design that is expected to be maintained throughout a game. Him opening up a customization menu and rapidly changing between random armour would not help immersion, but rather, break it. More importantly, it would take time and resources to develop a campaign customization system, and implement it. Time and resources spent on something superfluous and arguably detrimental to the experience is not a consideration I would hope 343i would take. Especially given the fact that they needed to delay the game, making any changes made between now and then necessary additions, or at the very least, important ones. You get to customize your own Multiplayer Spartan. That should be enough.

I hope we get a marine/ODST group we see regularly throughout the game, and I hope we get to upgrade them. Things like “Heavy Weapons veterans- Your fireteam uses and fires heavy weapons more often”

Unlikely, but I think it would be fun

Rather than customize chief what if we took a Reach/MGS5 approach to it. Halo Infinite is open world (or too some extent) so what if there is certain optional side objectives and missions that can be done by your Multiplayer spartan rather then the Chief? Of course you should always have the option to use Chief but we already know there will be upgrades and what some of the objectives are based around such as rescue missions. What if we can upgrade our Multiplayer spartan with abilities and attributes that are best suited for certain objectives in which Chief would still be good at but not excel? There is just too much on the plate and not enough info we know about the game. Maybe closer to release we should have this conversation/idea spark up again.

Highly unlikely. John has always opted to wearing the default variant of the most recent mjolnir armor available to him (albeit modded versions in Halo 4, 5 and presumably Infinite if we have the Gen 3 Mark VI available to us and it doesn’t resemble his).

I think the issue isn’t customization of master chief I think it’s the approach to customization that’s important, as long as it doesn’t effect the visuals or canon it’s good. But the best middle option would be to enable the player to change the look of the default armor but not the armor itself. For instance you could unlock stuff like damaged armor looks vs new, as well as some other small options like that, it would be ok. Other small stuff could be added like artwork on the left and right shoulder pieces of the default armor, that would be fine. But the armor itself could not be changed, just because I think it could negatively affect the cutscenes with swapped armor pieces and trying to render them, but maybe not. This is just my opinion.

Simply, no. Campaign is cannonical soyou shouldnt be able to costumize chief.

I liked Halo 3’s idea… playing as other characters involved in the story. Have multiple chiefs isnt too bad either, but I’m not against the multiplayer spartans. Maybe we will get to play as the pilot at some point?

The problem playing as the pilot would be he doesn’t have armor. I like the idea of playing as other characters within the story plot but it appears with the intention of going back to the roots that Chief will be alone. I’d prefer the multiplayer Spartans or even other characters as opposed to having multiple chiefs in co-op.

I forgot the pilot will be insanely vulnerable to covenant weapons…

Seeing as chief is most likely going to be alone, I’m guessing it is going to be multiplayer spartans for the other people or more chiefs. Either way it won’t be too big a deal for me, gameplay and overall quality is what I came for

Heyo that was me lol.

I still stand by this idea 100%

Lol…it was a good idea for sure and I knew it wasn’t me. Just spreading the good word :sunglasses:

I think I would like to go in an alternate direction where instead of editing chiefs armor we could have points in the campaign where the chief has damaged armor or devices attached to his armor that could be unlocked as customization options for your spartan in multiplayer as a reward for completing certain objectives/achievements to (depending on how open world it will be) to explore the maps more thoroughly and add more reasons to play the game multiple times.

Not sure that having a fully customized Chief would be great idea, especially given the fact that Chief now sports a new GEN 3 Mk VI armor, and how much backlash the Chief’s H4 and H5 look received. A level of gear customization, like say having the grapple shot, or jet pack, or other pick up item also be present on the Chief during cutscenes. However, a fully customizeable Chief would detract from the already established visuals of the Chief.
Just my opinion though.

Link me the the thread? I read the same thing but I wanted to get back on it and I can’t find it…
