By now, you’ve seen or or hear about the massive bombshell info dump from Jason Schreier. To say things are crazy is an understatement. From his uncoverings, 343 is essentially starting over from scratch with new management, but unfortunately at least 95 devs have been let go. The other massive news is that 343 WILL indeed be dropping the Slipspace Engine and developing all future games on the Unreal Engine. This is a lot to take in. The franchise has been through a lot over the past decade. From these pieces of info coming out, do you think a reboot of the franchise should happen?
Absolutely, Halo and Gears if we’re at it, are just too outdated at this point, they’re games that are mode for an audience that’s not thete anymore.
I’ve read a comment recently on other gaming forum, where someone brought God of War as an example - GoW3 was basically perfect, but Ascension showed the formula starting to show its age already, so Sony rebooted the game and I think we all know how it turned out, it’s as relevant as ever, selling dozens of millions of copies, being universally praised by both the gamers and the media, so at the end of the day it’s not the game it used to be anymore, but it’s still great, fresh experience, and that’s what ultimately matters.
And I firmly believe the same needs to happen with both MS’ flagship IPs, they just don’t cut it anymore and need a serious shake up. This or just abandon them altogether and use the studios and resources to make something new from scratch.
I know far too many Sony fans who’ve stated that God of War (2018) has exceptional production values and beautiful visuals, but only okay gameplay at best and no replay value. From my own personal experience with Sony first party titles, and regular talk with others, that statement sums up a lot of their first party games.
For God of War: Ragnarok, I know many Sony fans who have been, and I quote, “disappointed in every single way” with that game.
I also know many people who love the Halo and Gears of War franchise, classics and current.
I’m just getting back into the modern Gears franchise myself and am enjoying Gears of War 4, and I’m really excited for Gears Tactics. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed both Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Infinite as well (note I play Campaigns and Co-Op modes with shooters, not versus).
I can’t speak for Gears at the moment, but for Halo, I don’t think a reboot is needed but rather more consistent direction in design.
The problem today is no matter what’s done with a game/franchise, there will always be those who love it and those who despise it and everything in-between.
I still don’t fully believe the total UE5 switch tbh. We’re all working off rumors and incomplete information, so I’m not fully believing anything until MS or 343 make an official statement. I expect future spinoffs and single player on UE5, and MP on Slipspace or a Slipspace 2.0.
If a reboot happens, I would like to see the events of combat evolved from the perspective of a marine. I think a separate title should also finish up Infinite’s story.
If Infinite’s story goes the route of time travel and wiping out previous canon I’ll be pretty annoyed. Imo it’s lazy story telling
Except it’s Jason Schreier, the most trusted & legit industry insider. If he’s reporting it, it’s legit. So yea, if he’s saying this is happening, expect it to be true.
No, and no. A reboot of the franchise would completely ruin it, destroying all lore that was established over the decades solely to appease the Bungie purists and eSports pros. The only reboot I would accept is a complete reboot of 343’s upper management.
I mean from an MP point of view no “reboot” is needed. Its relatively unrelated to the lore.
The only lore that needs rebooting is the 343 era lore. I don’t trust them touching the original trilogy. Heck, look at what they let happen with the TV show.
Microsoft and 343 need to DIRECTLY acknowledge the mistakes and apologize to the fan base.
Then they need to reboot the ENTIRE series. They can then rebuild it following the template left by the original bungie games.
Remake CE, but also start a series following some non-Spartan characters through the 2040s etc., then weave those characters and storylines into the first three games. You could make games that flesh out Johnson, Jenkins, Mendoza, etc., then bring more significance to those characters involvement in CE.
Hire Marty O’Donnel and Joe Staten as story consultantns and use their input to integrate cut content and story into the world (the cut misisons from HAlo 3 in particular.)
Just my two cents! We get what we went, good halo content, and MSFT gets what they want, to continue milking off of Bungie’s previous work. (It could take 20 years to remake 4 games plus ODST plus an equal number of anthology games.
That’s the thing - they don’t. They don’t owe anything to anyone. It’s a business, bothing less, nothing more, it’s all about money. One of the biggest issue and reason why the series are struggling by, is that they do try to please both modern day average Joe, as well as the old-time die-hard fans who want the same 20yo game over and over again, and this simply doesn’t work as we saw with multiple installments by now, the end result will always be this mixed bag that’s neither a proper modern game nor a classic Halo, just the worst of both worlds. So the question is whether they should try to please those few thousand old fans left or those 20M people who tried the game and uninstalled it…
I also agree on this! we need to move on with new worlds and species and tech im tired of these old H3 Fans dictating the games future just stuck in the past we need this evolution now more than ever .
I am a die hard fan and i wanna move on going fowards with new stuff and worlds species etc! also so im sure there are many real fans that want the same ! the truth is that this forums is playing more of a negative affect on the future of the game and that needs to change these forums is not the voice for the majority of our fellow spartans so do i want h3 remade over and over ‘‘hell no’’ .
If you wanna play H3 go play it 343i has provided that platform and invested already allot of there energy on you H3 fans with the Master cheif collection and i do feel infinite did not benefit from this so whos to blame here maybe its the H£ fans or shal i say activision employesss lol just messing or am i !!!
It time to move into the futrre with new storys and worlds species new tech .
I have notied there are 2 type of Halo fans some are just stuck in the past and are very vocal and then theres the new generation ! now who are you going to support hhhm well i am in my 40’s and am with the new generation and not stuck in the past like many H3 fans it was a great game that lacked dynamic too be fare and i can see that halo hasnt realy reached its true potentual due to these Die hard halo 3 fans just holding it back no wonder bungie left poor guys .
But that’s just you, me and maybe a few other people in here, the rest of this forum is basically an echo chamber to whom everything is either game-braking or make the game not Halo anymore…
Yes but i think people would be suprised as how many hearts have changed now there are many like us now after this episode! like i said ‘‘Into the future we go’’ exciting times ahead.
I mean, people said the same thing about the classic art style in 2017.
You’d be surprised what they’ll do if they think it’s the best way to sell games. Besides, I aim to be around a while longer - surely someone will decide to make good halo again.
I feel that so long as they subscribe to the notion you’ve described - that Halo is stuck between the future and the past - they will continue to fail.
But to me, Infinite showed the potential for Halo to be a good combination of both. I didn’t like the plot, but I loved the storytelling. I didn’t like the open world, but the graphics and gameplay were mostly there.
Now wipe the slate and give a solid team of devs an opportunity to pick up the pieces, and there could be something amazing.
