Although I think most of you already know this, how much of the area seen by your radar was reduced in Halo 5 and this was done most likely for competitive balance reasons.
Do you like this new radar size, indifferent, or still have issues with it? Sense the social playlist is meant to be more of a place to chill I was thinking maybe it would be nice to make how far the radar reaches closer to say Halo 4 or 3 for example.
Often times spartans are going so fast in this iteration of multiplayer that the even smaller radar doesn’t give you enough time to realize the’ve come upon you and react to it. However, maybe less radar reliance is a good thing?
I understand that making the radar more universal to both playlists is a less confusing way to do things so people don’t wonder whats going on or have to adjust but I wanted to know your thoughts.
At this point in the game it might be too late for these changes as well and could be more of a thing to do in Halo 6 depending on how the multiplayer mechanics shift?
Social - Normal radar
Ranked - Halo 5 radar
Ranked+ - Ability Radar introduced in the tuning update
It’d be confusing to have it this way because of obvious reasons, but it’d be interesting to see the different playing styles.
They lost and alienated a lot of people early on with Halo 5 for a myriad of reasons, such as no BTB, weaker single player story, and such… but I’ve heard personally from my friends that the smaller radar really turned them off. It was tough for me at first too because I relied heavily on the radar (after 5 Halos including Reach, it was quite a jarring change). Obviously I’ve adjusted, as I still play this game religiously two years after its release ha. But also, my play style noticeably changed during the tuning playlists in September. The ability radar allowed for more strategies since the enemy couldn’t see me unless I used an ability. It even allowed for a slower more traditional-Halo game play experience. Dang…I kinda miss it
I played a lot of BTB starting in Halo Reach. Since that game had significantly larger BTB maps, I relied a lot on the motion tracker. It was a nice way to know when you’re about to get into a fight with a bad guy, instead of being surprised by people shooting you or, even more annoyingly, blowing you up with rockets or a tank before you can react.
The one time I was coerced into playing Call of Duty, my biggest turn-off was the lack of a reliable motion tracker which, combined with ridiculously high TTK, made it so every time I died, it was because I got surprised, rather than because I lost a gunfight. And “surprise you’re suddenly dead” is a lot more frustrating than “oh well I guess I need to improve my aim”.
I’ve heard the usual arguments for why “competitive” people in Halo don’t like the motion tracker (just use a headset to hear footsteps! etc.) but I always thought it was fine for BTB especially on larger maps. Sadly I don’t touch BTB in Halo 5, and that’s mostly because of its relatively cramped maps, but the motion tracker’s range reduction is another reason for that.
The entire game should have a larger radar. The short radar in H5 really adds to the “too competitive” pace that everyone complains about… without actually being competitive at all – in fact, it’s the opposite.
Because of the short range, it makes it highly rewarding to fly across the map, sprinting… and then stopping and crouching just out of range.
This makes the game both super fast paced, but also more nooby at the same time.
The results is a game that’s too “competitive” for new comers, but too “casual” for people who are actually competitive.
Previous halo’s had it better: no radar for MLG, and large radar for the rest.
Trying to pin it in the middle by reducing the range wasn’t an improved blend of the 2, it actually actively reduced the enjoyment of both styles of play. The abilities only radar is much closer to a true blend of the 2 that 343 was going for originally, and actually works better for HCS than no radar imo.
I think it should be 25m like it always has been. It’s funny they made Spartans faster and can charge but make motion trackers smaller… Makes no sense.
