I personally would love to see a Spartan Ops mode (or similar) return in Infinite, I had a lot of fun with my friends going through a story in a Fireteam of our own. I feel that the ability to go through a story with our own Spartans just adds that little bit extra to the feeling of Halo whilst also not removing our main Master Chief story (which is the most important one to most people)
I further believe that it would be a good addition due to the fact that we have our own Spartan Company’s and that a Spartan Ops-esqe mode could be a way the Company would have a shared objective we could all work towards, as such there isn’t just one way it could be implemented.
I don’t think this is something of high priority but something I feel should absolutely be considered!
I know this is a very short post, but I am looking to hear other people’s thoughts on this, reasons why it shouldn’t come back, reasons why it could and everything in between!
I personally would rather them put effort and resources into top quality story DLC that differs greatly from the main campaign than another spartan ops. I played through H4 spartan ops but didn’t really enjoy it.
Well considering they just put NPCs on multiplayer maps like Valhalla, I’d say it would have been better if they just gave us enemy spawns and the maps that were all recycled in Forge and have us make our own custom campaigns. The problem with Spartan ops (and 343 design philosophy back then) was that 343 thought it could direct the community to a better experience thus it took away creative control from the community to give us that epic director’s cut movie experience or something of the likes. Sorry but the community will always be larger than the studio, thus there is a well of creativity that no studio can hope to match. I mean it was a good try but we could tell that the 2 betrayals of just running the last map backwards can work as a new level but no more than once or twice. Spartan Ops had every level played out at least twice which made everything seem rather repetitive.
For that I say just give us the maps, put enemy spawns in forge and we can make our own Spartan Ops minus the voice narration and cut scenes. (but hey we could put that in too with Film modes).
Rather they focus on a major expansion since Spartan Ops from what I remember it got really repetitive and a lot of the missions ended up being the same mission over, over.
But I’m sceptical that this might be used to delay base content so rather they focus all their efforts in getting the game the best that it can be at launch.
The concept fundamentally does not work. The frequency at which content was being pumped out meant that there was far too little time to do proper mission design. This in turn led to reuse of mediocre levels with mediocre encounter design. The quality of gameplay you can provide with that sort of frequent episodic content simply isn’t enough unless you can somehow put in at least an order of magnitude more work and resources than was put in Spartan Ops.
As others have suggested, I’d rather see a single traditional style campaign expansion telling some side story with enough effort put into mission design that the quality is at the level of normal campaign missions.
Yeah I haven’t played Spartan Ops in years, so my memory is most likely hazy aha, but I do remember having fun with it, I absolutely agree that focus should be on more in-depth level creation and repetition is the last thing we want.
Glad to be hearing everyone’s opinion! Appreciate it guys, give me more to think about!
No, because even though I liked SO it really was boring in terms of gameplay. Storywise it was a nice little addition to the main story so I’d like to see that return.
Yes, because I sort of expect Infinite to be a serialized game. What I mean with that is that I wouldn’t be surprised if it contains a large open hub world a la ODST that leads to different missions etc but which would also make the game very suitable for expansions like SO were. So if you were to implement SO like missions that are better embedded in the main story world that would instantly make it feel more connected. The only reason to be wary of another SO I believe is that they’d need to pour in resources to make it feel like more of endless waves of enemies on empty maps.
Yeah a hub world would be great, especially for (as you mentioned) further expansions. I can see what you mean by SO feeling like endless waves on enemies in an empty map, I guess I didn’t realize so much as I was more concentrating on kicking butt with my mates.
I think they should have a 1-4 player pve mode like in semi-open world areas like destiny. Theres way more pve replayability in destiny patrol areas then in spartan ops. Like others have said rather then spartan ops just having real campaign dlc would be what I wanted. That being said i didnt hate spartan ops i just think they would have done well to have maybe 15 missions not 50, which then brings the point why not make them full campaign missions.
I personally would like the original form of Firefight to return instead of Spartan Ops; four players going against infinite number of waves of enemies until they expire their shared life pool.
I always enjoyed the intensity of each wave becoming tougher the further you survive.
Yes. Fireteam Crimson is us and we should be involved in the story again, whether it be during the events of Infinite or after, because we were badass additions.
I have mixed feelings about Spartan Ops. On one hand, I liked the idea of 343 continuing to deliver story content post-launch.
On the other hand, I felt the execution was off. Though the story was good, the mission design was bland and repetitive. Additionally, there was no matchmaking (if my memory serves me right), which meant that gamers like myself who had no one to play with had to struggle through it solo.
I would like for 343 to deliver story/campaign content for Halo Infinite regularly after launch, but maybe not exactly like they did with Spartan Ops.
