Should I throw in the towel?

So, here’s my story.

Since Halo: Combat Evolved, I have loved this game series probably more than any other ever produced. Only in Halo 3 did I stray away from the campaign modes and begin to explore the world of Matchmaking. And boy, was I in for a spanking.

Again, and again, and again, and again.

A very close friend of mine has been extraordinary at Halo for as long as I’ve known him. It’s like he doesn’t even have to try, and most every game I’ve ever played with him, all he’s ever seemed is either bored or irritated at his baddie-randies for teammates. I try, guys. I try so hard to get better. Halo 3’s MLG prime came and went, and I was left with a laughable K/D, an embarrassing W/L, and astonishment whenever I could kill someone in six shots with the battle rifle, let alone four, despite my endless hours of training. I never even got a 50 in a single playlist.

So Reach came out. I got it at midnight of its release as is customary, and figured that it would take some time to get used to the DMR. Its been over two years since the release of this game, I have a BPR of 47, a K/D of 0.9, and can barely make it through games because I just get tired of dying. It makes me feel like I’m playing Call of Duty ._.

I tried all the tricks, I played MLG, I tried crouching, pacing my shots, staying with my team, playing SWAT, playing Snipers, learning callouts, learning weapons spawns and times. I can’t tell you how often I’ve beat my face off my television, doing everything I could to learn all of the shortcuts and player spawns. I quit for a good few months and have recently been trying to get back into playing because I want to be in shape for Halo 4. Its one of my dreams to actually have a team and play on Gamebattles. But I also wanna roll around in a McDonalds ball pit full of kittens. Dreams can be crazy.

Should I give up on playing competitively? Are there some kids just destined to be garbage? Should I save myself the mental suicide and just relax and enjoy Halo 4 for all the beauty it promises to be, and leave the hardcore gaming to the pros?

What would you do?

try to watch films of your gameplay and learn why or what killed you. if you find yourself bum rushing into areas then that might be the root cause if you are dying a lot.

Watching gameplay on youtube can help you see how others play / how they move around the map in various situations. I have an entire library of gameplay on my youtube =)

In the end though don’t let some number on a website defeat you.

Agreed. Although, im not a big MLG player, i try to view my games on why i sucked, but only the ones i did terrible at and just review them. Its like football. Watch it, study it, and do it.

This. Don’t give up, it takes alot of practice. I suck at MLG, and in Reach, I played 2 games of MLG, and I got zero kills in any of them. -_-

I started Matchmaking in August, and I still need to practice. I don’t play MLG much which may explain my BPR and K/D ratio for Reach and Halo 3 since I started in August and you’ve been playing Matchmaking much more than me. I suggest Team Slayer or Super Slayer, or Team Objective, or even Rumble Pit if you want to do some FFA, and if you want to lay back a bit, Grifball if you can manage the possible Spawn Trapping jerks in there. After a while you can move on to other playlists and eventually you’ll get more experienced, then try MLG again. And don’t forgot to view the matches you lost to see what happened unless it involved everyone on your team quitting.

And do not spawn trap. I can honestly say I’ve done it once today in Invasion with a friend on Spire. There was only two enemy Spartans so there was no way we could keep our team from messing them up.

But that’s just an option.

Although I don’t watch Theater much, I usually just play and try to improve and not die as much and try to work with the team if I have one. Today in Oddball, I was holding the ball and got 105 points for our team with me holding the ball, and the other team members were defending me. And I said to a friend who was a teammate that I felt like a President and my teammates were Secret Service Agents protecting me and he did an Arnold Shwarzennager impersonation for laughs.

> Watching gameplay on youtube can help you see how others play / how they move around the map in various situations

I guess it would be pretty helpful to see the game through their HUD and figure out how they go +18 in every single match without breaking a sweat, lol.

Gave me a laugh, too. Thanks for the morale boost =] I tried backing off and playing some objective for an hour, it helped me cool my head down. Grifball is ALWAYS a blast if you can get people in the game who will actually play instead of just camping the ball/spawns.

I’ve been taking a few more cracks at MLG, and though it’s hard, watching the other players in Theater mow me down has really helped me take a look at that certain walkway I need to stop going across, or the obvious side hall I could’ve taken instead of straight down the middle.

One thing is for sure though, as soon as H4 hits, I’m gonna be Gandhi-hopping for joy to have the ol’ battle rifle back. I’m no marksman, and having that comfortable mid-range advantage back is gonna feel much better.

I’ve never really been good at a Halo game, and i’ve been playing since the CE. I’ve spent many, many hours playing Halo 2 online, Halo 3 online, and Reach. But I just like to play, don’t let people, or a number get you down like the guy above me said. Just play, i’m decent I think, i’m not the worst, or the best. But I play the game still, it’s fun, I know i’ll never be as good as the MLG guys or anything pro. I want to have my own team on gamebattles too, but i would be spanked lol. I just like to play because I get to play with other players who like the same thing I do, Halo.

I agree with what most others said. Go on youtube watch pro’s gameplays and go into theater and watch not only your gameplay but others as well and study it watch everything. Between the big things like map movement or weapon timing, and the small things like their strafing or jumps. I’m certainty not the best player ever but I am decent to say the least. The best advise I can give you to to know the maps perfectly. Not only weapon times, locations, or call outs, but even the high traffic places, the jumps, and the hiding places. My other advise is to always try to get the surprise on them, because even if you don’t have the godly aim that some other people may have if you can get 1, 2, or maybe even 3 shots on someone before they spot you, you will almost always win the battle.

I hope this helped.

feel free to pm me if interested and I’ll open the door for ya on my archive of Halo 3 and Reach gameplay goods. I upload anywhere from 6-15+ new Halo gameplay matches per week. So far have over a combed total of 800+ matches, literally unlimited gameplay content with various weapons, gametypes, styles, and maps basically.

I’m planning to have some commentary on tips on how to do well in Halo in general in a few weeks as well.

I know that feel bro, i will be literally taking my disc outside the night of November 6th and shooting it a few times…

It’s really important to not give up! No matter what, anything can be accomplished if you put in enough effort.

I see this with a lot of people though, many people play a lot of games and think that they’ll improve just by playing a lot, when a lot of the time you’ll improve by studying your past games, looking at how and why you’ve been killed and defeated.

I’m in a group that tends to tutor lower level players, being both new players and veterans that have been stuck at a bar alike, and I’d be happy to try and help you improve if you’re willing to listen to my advice.

Feel free to add me any time on XBL and we’ll play some games together, see if we can’t push up your skills!

Yeah, that sounds like me, so I really don’t know how you feel. My own problem is that my friends don’t want to play with me, because they know they’ll lose. But, I don’t even care for winning against them, I just want to have a fun time. Most of my friends are just like you, they just can’t get better for some reason.

I used to be pretty bad though (well, an average 1.3 k/d which kept going down because I shared my acount with my little sister :P). But at one point I started to meet some guys at Invasion who were better than me at the time and we started to play with each other. Playing with them made me a lot better and also made me enjoy the game more, because I learned more. And now we always play as a team and we win almost everything.

I hope you’ll get better and please don’t give up! You love Halo, don’t you? So just keep trying, but also try to not get too mad at the game or yourself if it doesn’t work out. It’s all about having fun, if you get frustrated (like me sometimes), just play/do something different and get back to it later.

Dont get me wrong, I have a 100 bpr, multiple onyxes, and a 2.0 kd with 110k kills.
That being said, check my halo 3 stats:
negative rank, high skill 42, double bar colonel.

That being said, both reach and H3 were amazing games, fun comes from love of the game, not love of the spawnkill. And even though I was much better at halo reach, halo 3 had many more elements in which I had much more fun.

No one is destined to be garbage at anything. I was in the same boat as you for a long time back in H2/3, cause I live in a town where there were 5 Semi-Pro players at MLG and one pro and used to hang out with them on a consistent basis, it was tough keeping up with them during LANs or even just playing customs with them. Raw skill can only get you so far. Even if you’re lacking in that department, find the area you are good at and refine it. Then you can use that to work on the rest.

If you’re having trouble beating people outright then become a smarter player, figure out the right time to flank someone, or be in position to clean up important kills. When it comes to competitive playing in Halo, from my perspective having someone who KNOWS what to do in situations is far more useful to a team.

My previously mentioned friend has said this one to me. He tries to encourage me by saying that assists are just as important as kills, that just trying to stay alive and put as many shots into people that I can are two assets in a game that can’t be matched.

I guess I could try to work on this kind of strategy while I train since I can’t hit the side of a barn with a DMR. lol.

video games (especially halo) are created to have fun.
if you feel like your not enjoying yourself then relax, have some fun for instance custom games
i dont consider myself good at halo, but but its my favorite game nevertheless.
my point being, games are just what they are called, GAMES leave MLG to people with no life.
i hope i was helpful, good luck.

PS.:i’m not saying that MLG players have no life but i’m pretty sure not all of them do.

i agree with the treat it like a game part although you can still improve your game skills.

oh and prepare yourself for the reply’s to this comment

I’m not sure if I’m taking your comment the wrong way but your comment seems very biased and one sided. I do agree completely that games are meant to have fun but there are always the people who are naturally better and ones who takes everything competitively for anything whether it was made for competitive means or made for casual, relaxed gameplay. As for the actual MLG Pros. The game that they are involved in, in this case Halo, is simply a job that they love, spending around 8 hours a day playing training for the competitions. Of course some of them don’t have lives but does everyone in any profession always have a life. Their job being playing a game doesn’t really change anything.

Hi,
A few things:

First - Don’t wish too much for the H4 Battle Rifle - the script is that there will be very little auto-aim with this version so you’ll need to be super-accurate; however there will be the Carbine and DMR.

Next - My KD and BPR were the worst ever seen on the Bungie forum, even now they’re still worse than yours. But they are getting better and now I’ll finish 9 out of 10 games with a positive KD. The reason? I play Anniversary and use the pistol and shottie exclusively, I don’t even bother with rockets, needler, AR etc. A steady nerve and a steady hand and three to the head, simple. I do know that it’ll take me ages to get them where I’d like them to be cos I’m starting from such a low base, but it’ll be fun doing it. Which leads on to:

Finally - Really, forget about statistics and simply have fun. It’s a game, you play it and play is meant to be enjoyable. I know it’s better to be the shootist than the shot but please don’t quit - I nearly did, till I learned how to use an M6G.

your dedication to getting better intrigues me. First off you need to know the difference between playing MLG and playing other playists. MLG is a totally different type of playist, it focuses on Zero bloom and no radar, most ppl depend heavily on the radar, like myself, but i can adapt if i ever play mlg. When i’m playing other playists like invasion, i try to pay attention to the radar at all times but at the same time focusing on the main screen. there are a lot of tricks and spots people use. if you want to play with me i could help you get a lil better and get you in the right direction, it seems like you are knowledgable about the game, weapon spawns, etc.
