Should I play the old games now that it’s delayed?

Hey. I’m new to Halo and want to ask a quick question. Since 343 Industries calls the game a ‘spiritual reboot’ that’s a perfect spot for first-timers to hop in, I’ve been reserving Halo Infinite as my entry point into the series. Now that it’s delayed until 2021, however, I have this inner conflict on whether I want to play through the old titles during the wait. Do you guys think it’s worth it? It’s so hard to decide because I’m not great at games without modern mechanics, but they look really fun at the same time.

Go for it, the MCC is a perfect place to start.
To potentially ease the transition into less advanced stuff, start with Reach, then plow through each campaign. It’ll be worth it.

Also, a tip, yes, things does feel slightly slow in the older titles. To remedy that, go into the options and video settings, increase the Field of View. I use 120 on both normal and vehicle. If you can do that on the xbox, and you’re playing on the xbox. I play on PC

Absolutely. I’d say it’s worth playing them regardless of Infinite’s release, and their mechanics.

Pro tip: if you reduce the FoV to 70 in something like the scorpion, it is easier to hit far away targets. Very useful for taking out the first wraith on the level Metropolis if you want to avoid getting mortared while ghosts are bothering you. It does suck switching the FoV, but it depends on what you are doing.

A 110 % YES! Granted, it’s a loaded question asking it on waypoint. Play through all of them.

Basically you can play them in:

  • Release order - CE, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, 4 - makes the most sense gameplay wise if you want to see how they evolved. - Chronological order (Version a) - Reach, CE, 2, ODST, 3, 4 - chronological order of events, however, Reach having released after 3 may mean you find the transition to CE quite jarring. - Chronological order (Version b) - Reach, CE, 2 (up to (including) the level Metropolis), ODST, 3, 4 - same as above except takes into account the fact that ‘Halo 3: ODST’ actually takes place during Halo 2. The course of the game lasts a single night (see spoiler below for extra detail if you want), then after finishing ODST, continue off from 2 with the level the Arbiter. except the final cutscene which is a flash-forward to the beginning of halo 3.Edit: I forgot to mention the RTSs, Halo Wars 1 and 2. They’re not crucial to the storyline of the main games. However, they’re pretty fun in my opinion (unless RTSs aren’t your thing). Just be aware (as a person who plays loads of RTSs on PC), if you’re coming from a major RTS franchise like Total War or Sins of a Solar Empire etc. you will find the strategic aspect to be a lot simpler (largely due to console accessibility). That said they’re pretty fun imo.

Play Halo Wars 1 before Reach if you’re going chronological and you can play Halo Wars 2 after 4 (the antagonists or rather the faction in this game looks to be the antagonist of Infinite as well) .

ALSO, WELCOME TO THE HALO FAMILY  !!

Edit 2: You can ignore 5 (as it has loads of ‘modern mechanics’). It has some redeeming points like a custom game browser, best forge Halo’s map editor, fun multiplayer (once you get used to it though it is very different) but the worst progression system in terms of unlocks (lootbox based) and I think what many would say is the WORST Halo campaign ever. It has some fun levels and map design, don’t get me wrong (though many may disagree, this is all my opinion) but the story absolutely is awful and probably will be a small part if any of Infinite.

Why not play them. They are all excellent games in their own right. You may find a few things you don’t like but overall the pros out-weigh the cons. So go for it imo.

I find it slightly funny that you are asking the Halo community if you should play the Halo games. It would be funny if we said no, either way I’m glad you asked.
Halo changed the world of gaming and is probably the reason Xbox succeded.
The story alone is worth is even if its not your type of game, and there is probably as much or even more lore than lotr.
Play them the order they were released for your first playthrough, you can buy almost all of the for the prize of 1 in mcc
I personally recomend the first game om the old graphics and sound, feels more alive, but Halo 2 is great in remastered in my opinion.
Combat evolved might feel a little old and wonky, because it is, but try to keep an open mind.
Have an amazing experience!! I doubt you will be dissapointed

Get MCC. Its a complete package for a good price. No excuse not to play the previous Halo games.

Definitely play them. And I agree with the release order, though starting with Reach is fine, too!

This statement implies that your skill level for these types of games is set in stone. But I don’t see why you wouldn’t get better at Halo if you just tried it out and spent some time getting used to the game mechanics, or lack thereof.

Anyway, my entry point into the Halo franchise was Reach, which made a pretty good first impression on me, so I agree with everyone who’s saying to get Master Chief Collection and play through the campaigns starting with Halo Reach.

Welcome to the Halo Franchise. It’s really up to you to determine where you start off your journey. But If I was to say, start with Halo: Master Chief Collection then give Halo Wars 1 and 2 a try if you want a change in gameplay style and perspective. If you’re feeling a little daring, try Halo 5 as well, although I recommend bracing your endurance a bit since alot of people call the campaign “divisive.” I personally like all the titles regardless and I hope you find joy in them all as well. Last thing on my recommendation list would be to give the expanded media a try like the books and comics, they’ll make things a whole lot more jaw dropping.

Absolutely worth giving them a try. I still play MCC with my son. We are thinking about going through all the campaigns again before Infinite comes out.

Definitely play it. Do either normal or heroic difficulty though. Stay away from Legendary until you want to make yourself suffer.

Definitely play them. They’re short and sweet. Well… not H5. That one is short and bitter.

I don’t see any reason not to. Buy the MCC including Reach and ODST first. Then play in order story wise, because that is probably the best thing to do if you want to understand what is going on with Infinite next year.
I also included both Wars games in brackets:

[Wars] > Reach > CE > H2 (up until leaving Earth) > ODST > rest of H2 > H3 > H4 > H5 [Wars 2]

If you really want to be a completionist you could look for Spartan Assault (between 3/4) and Spartan Strike (between 4/5 but with a simulation training taking place during H2 to start)

You should play the old games because they are superior games to anything 343 has made or will make. All of the original trilogy campaigns hold up very well and are still incredibly fun.

Halo 3 is probably the most accessible multiplayer game to someone only familiar with modern shooters. Halo 2 and Halo 1 are still excellent games but some of their design will feel less intuitive to play, I expect.

are you joking! of course you should halo wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the originals play through all the campaigns you wont regret it

Play them in chronological order. Trust me, it will make the games a lot easier to understand from the standpoint of a newbie to halo.

That’s a good point. I guess I’m just a little afraid to try something different, but I think you’re right. Every game has a learning curve.

I recommend playing the old Halo titles in MCC. I recommend starting with Halo CE. That is the game that started it all and the game 343 is working to reboot.
