Should I play the first Halo Wars first?

Hi all. I’ve never played Halo Wars, with the exception of the new beta that just came out. It seemed pretty cool. My question is do you think I should be able to jump right into the second one or should I play the old one first?

Thanks

if you care about the backstory of the spirit of fire and her crew in a game that has some amazing cutscenes and tolerable RTS controls (its a console RTS after all) that is placed on the earlier parts of the human-covenant war, then you should get it.
or if you only like this newer era of Halo with prometheans and such with the humanity being somekind of superior race instead one that is strugling for survival against some overpowering enemies and if you dont really care about the background, then you shouldnt get it.

and dont worry about the graphics, it doesnt really matter in the gameplay since everything is so small and the background and especially the cutscenes have graphics ahead of their time and i wouldnt really mind if even the modern games looked like the Halo Wars cutscenes to be honest.

I’d recommend it, it’s a fun game with a good story, not bad gameplay, and has a good amount to do for a while. If you want to know the characters, I’d say absolutely. Seeing them be pushed to their limits after fighting so hard and being mostly successful is pretty intriguing. Also Halo Wars 2 takes place in the Halo 5 era, so you should know the campaign for that just in case, but you don’t need to.

It never hurts to play the first one. It’s a good game to mess around in.

Play the old one first. I reccomend you bet the campaign on Normal then play at least 10 games on skirmish.

wouldn’t hurt at all and would improve your skill and make you more comfortable

You know the most awkward thing about the fact I used to be good at this game is that I never beat the campaign. Like I have no idea what happens in it.

Thanks guys, I’ve heard that HW2 comes with the first one as well? If that’s the case I’ll definitely play the old one first.

Get it digitally, and they’ll send you a code between the 20th and the 30th for a free download if you get the ‘collectors’ edition (or whatever it is called) for $80.

Halo wars DE only comes with Ultimate edition of halo wars 2, not the regular version just so you know.

Ehh, I’ll probably just get them separately then.

Thanks guy. I’ll probably just get them separately. Do you know if the old one is backwards compatible?

You’ll probably end up spending more money in the long run. For $80 you get the definitive edition of Halo Wars 1, Halo Wars 2, and the season pass for Halo Wars 2. It’s an extra $20 now but you’d probably end up spending over $100 for all of those items after the fact.

It is, but won’t include the DLC, so money wise, getting the collectors edition still comes out ahead, even if you can get it used for less than $20

Alright, thanks man.

I think that’s what I’ll do then, thanks man.

Yes due to the fact that it has a good campaign and how everything happen on planet Harvest. Also because they have good memorable character.

I believe the season pass is being prices somewhere above 20 USD (I read it somewhere, but can’t find the source at the moment). The game itself is priced at 59.99 USD or something like that while the ultimate is priced at 79,99 (just going with rough prices based on my memory). So everything else on top of the season pass can be considered “free” in the ultimate edition =)

I mulled this numbers through my head before I decided to buy it awhile ago. According to my math back then you get the Definitive edition and 4 days early access to HW2 (which we all know is going to be a huge mess just like the HW:DE release) for “free”.

If you are not planning on getting Halo Wars 2: Ultimate Edition, no, definitely not. Just watch the cutscenes on YouTube and you’re fine.

Agreed, I played the first Halo Wars such a long time ago that I do not recall the story or characters which will not prevent me from enjoying Halo Wars 2. Halo 5 story wasn’t memorable either. Enjoy the game and if so inclined youtube the cutscenes.
